Welcome Back to Day 2 of the ANZPT Sydney Main Event

Welcome back to The Star for Day 2 of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour Sydney Main Event.

Both opening days combined for 460 entrants, generating a prize pool of $920,000. 54 runners will make the money with first place earning the eventual champion $223,600 for their troubles.

175 runners return today, led by Day 1b chip leader Ashley Mason. He was able to amass a stack of 253,800 chips in the last two levels of yesterday’s play, to lead the pack. The next closest is Gary Benson, on 193,500 in chips. He’ll be hoping he can accumulate chips as quickly as he did during Day 1a as he makes a run for the title.

Stay tuned as the PokerNews Live Reporting Team bring you all the up to date coverage starting at 12:30pm local time.

Play Gets Underway

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

The 175 returning players have all been welcomed back by the Tournament Director. The cards are in the air for the commencement of play. Lynn Gilmartin introduces some of the largest stacks in the room:

Wing Wins First Hand

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

We’ve had an elimination in the first hand of the Day. The action started with Ebon Bokody opening to 4,000 before Tom Wing moved all in for 30,000 from the small blind. Ashley Warner then followed suit, moving all in for his remaining 17,000 from the big blind. Bokody folded and the players tabled their cards.

Wing: {J-Clubs}{J-Spades}
Warner: {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

The board ran out {A-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} to see Warner eliminated from the tournament, as Wing’s stack moves up to 50,000 in chips.

Kouriel Doubles, Huynh Crippled

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

We arrived at the table to see the board spread out {J-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{3-Clubs} with John Kouriel being all in, with approximately 40,000 in chips sitting in front of him. The decision was on Monica Huynh, who made the call, and was shocked when Kouriel tabled {A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for a rivered straight.

She mucked her cards and stepped away from the table to try and take in what had happened.

“I couldn’t fold. I had so many outs on the turn,” said Kouriel, as he raked in a massive pot.

That hand sees Huynh drop down to just 9,000 in chips, as Kouriel moves up to 150,000 and change.

Carlton Makes the Call

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

The big stacks are battling over on Table 1. Benjamin Benoit opened the pot with a bet of 3,000 from the cut-off before facing a raise from Adam Carlton on the button to 7,500. He called, and both saw the flop come {9-Clubs}{8-Spades}{4-Diamonds}. Benoit checked-called a bet of 6,800, before both players checked the {q-Diamonds} on the turn. The river came the {Q-Clubs}, and Benoit grabbed a handful of 5,000 chips and placed them in the middle of the table. It totalled 60,000, covering Carlton.

Carlton sat back for a few minutes before finally making the call, bringing a muck from Benoit.

Carlton tabled his {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades} as he scooped in the 90,000 chip pot.

Zalac Flushes Cohen

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

Ivan Zalac recently found a double-up from Hugh Cohen. The flop read {K-Spades}{A-Spades}{4-Clubs} and Zalac had moved all in for his remaining 33,000 in chips after Cohen had placed out a bet. He was called, and both players tabled their cards.

Zalac: {J-Spades}{2-Spades}
Cohen: {A-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

Cohen was in front with his top pair, and just had to dodge a spade. The {9-Hearts} on the turn was no help for Zalac, but the {4-Spades} on the river, assured him the win as he moved back up to 75,000 in chips.

Wilson Jumps for Joy

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

We caught the action with the flop reading {q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}. Paul Wilson was in the big blind, and checked over to his opponent who was under the gun. After facing a bet of 5,200, Wilson quickly raised to 13,800 and was immediately asked for a count of his chips. His opponent then moved all in which was snap called.

Wilson: {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Opponent: {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}

Wilson needed to catch a diamond to win the hand and stay in the tournament. The {6-Hearts} on the turn was no help, but the {3-Diamonds} was, as he jumped straight of his chair and yelled out “YES!”
