Pantling Wins an Easy 2,500

When four players limp into a pot and three of them then call a raise, usually interesting things can be expected on the flop. Charles Chua, Julian Powell, Joe Hachem and David Chiu all limped in before Andrew Pantling raised to 800 from the small blind. All called except Powell.

The flop came down built for action -- {Q-Clubs} {4-Hearts} {K-Clubs}. Oddly, everyone checked. When the turn was the {A-Hearts}, Pantling led out for 2,500 and folded each of the other players.

Big Names Making Waves

JC Tran Accumulating Chips
JC Tran Accumulating Chips
Eric Assadourian is making a good defense of his APPT High Rollers title so far today. In a recent hand he caught a running full house with {J-?}{10-?} and got paid off by his opponent with a 3,400 chip bet on the river. He is up to 38,000.

JC Tran is also accumulating chips after he check-called bets of 3,500 on the turn and 6,000 on the river on a {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}. His opponent said "two pair" as JC Tran flipped {K-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} for the straight to take it down and move up to 36,000.

Chuck Truck Picks Up Where He Left Off

After winning close to US$300,000 last night, Charles Chua is off to a good start today. On his first hand of the day, he called a raise to 600 from Joe Hachem, in position. The button player also called. On a flop of {2-Spades} {4-Clubs} {5-Hearts}, Hachem made a continuation bet of 1,600 that only Chua called.

Hachem fired again on the {5-Diamonds} turn for 3,500. Chua remained undeterred and made the call. When the river came {9-Diamonds}, both players checked.

"Nothing," said Hachem. Chua opened just slightly better than nothing when he showed {3-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} for a pair of threes. With that pot, he's up to 25,000 and Hachem is down to 24,000.

David Steicke
David Steicke
In a hand just prior to the break, David Steicke raised it up to 600 preflop, before David Saab made it 2,000 to go. Steicke made the call and they saw a flop of {7-Clubs}{10-Spades}{2-Spades}.

Both players checked and they went to the turn of {Q-Diamonds}. Steicke led out for 2,050 and Saab made the call. The river was the {3-Spades} and Steicke fired again, this time for 3,000. Saab made the call.

Steicke showed {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts} for top pair, top kicker which was good to take the pot.

"I guess I shouldn't have given you the free card then!" exclaimed Saab as he falls to 21,000. Steicke is now up to 31,200.

The Razor Gets Cut

"The Razor"
"The Razor"
John "the Razor" Phan has had an impressive 2008, but past results are no guarantee of future performance. Phan got all in preflop against Javed Abrahams with {A-Clubs}{K-?}. Abrahams had {K-Hearts} {K-Spades} and survived the confrontation when the board came {7-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {J-Hearts} {8-Hearts} {9-Spades}. That pot pushed him over the starting stack to 22,000 and dropped Phan to 11,000

Mercier Can't Get Going

Isabelle Mercier
Isabelle Mercier
Isabelle Mercier, a late arrival to today's tournament, hasn't made much progress with her stack yet. She bet 1,300 on a board of {8-Spades} {J-Spades} {3-Clubs} and was raised by her lone opponent to 2,600. She made the call. Both players checked the {A-Diamonds} on the turn. When the river came {q-Hearts}, Mercier fired again for 2,600. Her opponent raised her to 8,600, inducing a quick fold.

Mercier has about 18,000 in chips.
