Mertzanis On a Wild Ride

Greek PokerStars online qualifier Dimitrios Mertzanis has been a wild ride today. He's been down, he's been up, he's bluffed and he's sucked out. He's done it all.

Just recently, Mertzanis opened to 2,500 preflop (yes, 2,500) and was called in one spot. After a flop of {8-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}, Mertzanis fired 3,000. His opponent moved all in for 16,000 and Mertzanis made the call, tabling the {A-Spades}{J-Clubs}. His opponent held the {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. The turn brought the {4-Clubs} and then the river completed the board with the {Q-Clubs}, also completing the high club flush for Mertzanis. With that pot and elimination of his opponent, Mertzanis moved up to 97,000 chips.

On the next hand, Mertzanis raised before an opponent went all in. Mertzanis called with the {A-Hearts}{10-Clubs}, but was dominated by the {A-Clubs}{K-Spades} of his opponent. This time, there was no suckout glory for Mertzanis after a board of {9-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{A-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and he dropped back to 85,000 chips.

On the very next hand, a pot developed between Eric Assadourian, Mertzanis and one other player. The flop was {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and the unknown player checked. Assadourian fired 2,000 and then Mertzanis raised to 12,000. The unknown player called all in for 10,200 and then Assadourian ducked out of the way. Mertzanis revealed pocket fives against his opponent's {Q-Clubs}{10-Hearts}.

The turn was the {9-Diamonds} and the river the {4-Spades}. Mertzanis couldn't find luck this time either and lost the pot to drop back to 72,000.

Kirk Steals One

The board read {10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} when we caught up with the three-handed action. Jukka Juvonen checked, and Roger Spets bet 6,000 into a similarly-sized pot. Matthew Kirk moved all in from the button, an effective raise of about 10,000. It took Juvonen a minute to fold, and Spets mucked as well. As Kirk raked in the pot, he flashed the frustrating {4-Spades}. No one at the table reacted.

Pots Keep Getting Pushed to Steicke

David Steicke fired a bet of 2,050 after a woman checked the action over to him. After a minute of deliberating, she made the call and the two saw the {6-Diamonds} added to the board on the turn. The woman checked once more and then Steicke fired 5,025. Another minute ticked off the clock before the woman folded and gave Steicke another pot.

Nielson Doubles

Daniel Neilson doubles with his mates looking on
Daniel Neilson doubles with his mates looking on

Daniel Nielson had all of his 15,400 chips in the middle preflop holding the {10-Hearts}{10-Spades}. He was called by an opponent with the {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}. Nielson was able to find some luck on the flop in the form of a big, fat {10-Diamonds} as the board rolled out {10-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{6-Clubs}.

That double up puts Nielson over 31,000 chips.

Assadourian Against Steicke

Eric Assadourian
Eric Assadourian

David Steicke checked the flop of {10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} to Eric Assadourian. He checked behind. The turn was the {Q-Hearts} and Steicke checked. Assadourian fired 1,725 and Steicke made the call. The river completed the board with the {Q-Diamonds} and Steicke checked. Assadourian didn't bite and checked behind. Steicke rolled over the {Q-Spades}{J-Diamonds} for trip queens and raked in the chips. It wasn't a big clash, but this was the first time these two butted heads since occupying seats at the same table.

Aggression Down Under

Stefan Bos raised to 1,000 under the gun, and a two seats down, Cole Swannack made it 2,850 to go, leaving himself about 7,000 behind. Daniel Neilson called out of the big blind, and Bos got out of the way of the Aussie-on-Kiwi confrontation. It went check-check on the {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{9-Clubs} flop, and the same action, or lack of it, after the {4-Hearts} on the turn. The river brought the {5-Spades}, and that's when Neilson made his move. He bet all of his last 8,000, enough to cover Swannack. Swannack quickly folded, and this one went to the Aussie.

Tang Can't Hang On

John Quoc Hoang raised to 800 from under the gun, and the next player to act, Kejing Tang, moved all in for his last 4,125. Chih Yen Chen made the call, and Hoang folded to let them battle it out. It was a race for Tang's life, with his {3-Clubs}{3-Spades} up against Chen's {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}. An ace on the flop was all she wrote for Tang, who's day is done.
