Powell Smacks Pedley with His Nuts

Michael Pedley
Michael Pedley

Michael Pedley raised from the cutoff seat to 5,100 and Julian Powell called out of the big blind. The flop came down {A-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{3-Spades} and both players checked. The turn brought the {4-Hearts} and this is where things got interesting.

Powell led out with a bet of 8,000 and Pedley raised him to 23,000. Powell took some time and then moved all in. Pedley quickly called. The look on Pedley's face was as if someone just robbed his of everything he owned when he saw Powell turn up the {7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for the nut straight. Pedley held the {K-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} for the low-end of the straight and was drawing dead. The river completed the board with the {Q-Diamonds} and that was it for Pedley. Powell earned the elimination and moved up to 125,000 chips.

Rubie's On a Roll

Chatting with Brendon Rubie on break, he was thrilled to have been moved to a new table. He claimed that he just couldn't get anything going at his old table and that the players there had him pegged. Since being moved to his new table, Rubie's moved his stack from 100,000 to 180,000. Here's a little look at how he's done it.

Right when Rubie got moved, he three-bet a rather spastic player with {A-}{6-} to win a pot preflop. Shortly after that, he four-bet a player with {Q-}{10-} to show his new table that he meant business and wasn't going to back down in his new chair.

Then after Keith Hawkins opened a pot from early position to 4,500, Rubie called out of the small blind. He led out with a bet of 4,300 on the flop of {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{9-Spades} and Hawkins folded to pick up that pot. After that hand, Rubie was at about 160,000.

On the very next hand, Rubie raised the button to 5,000 before Kenny Shih moved all in for 16,700 from the small blind. Rubie made the call with his {Q-Spades}{J-Clubs} and was up against Shih's {K-Spades}{9-Clubs}. The board ran out {A-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{J-Spades}{2-Diamonds} and Rubie added the pot to his stack to increase to about 180,000.

Gwinner in Free Fall

Henrik Gwinner
Henrik Gwinner

Henrik Gwinner started the day as one of the biggest stacks, but he's been moving in the wrong direction - and quickly - for the past two levels. Brendon Rubie raised, and Gwinner called to get to a {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop heads up. Rubie bet 11,300, and Gwinner called. There was some discussion about how much the bet actually was and how much change Gwinner was due, but it was all sorted out quickly. After the {j-Hearts} on the turn, Rubie checked, and Gwinner tried the same bet - 11,300. Brendon called. The river was the {2-Spades}, and after asking Gwinner how much he was playing, Rubie decided just to check. Gwinner checked behind, and Rubie showed {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} to take the big pot. Gwinner is down to 58,000 while Rubie is up to 145,000 and has taken over as table captain.

Kim Trips Over Ace-Queen

Smiley Wooka just before her elimination
Smiley Wooka just before her elimination

Wooka Kim has been nursing her short stack all day, and she finally found a profitable spot to stick it in there with {A-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}. She was looked up by a player with {K-Spades} {10-Spades}, and things were looking good for Kim.

Things would get even better, too. The flop brought two more queens to give her a hammer lock on the hand and leave her opponent drawing dead to two running cards. The king that hit fourth street, however, was one of those out cards, and anyone who's spent time around poker wouldn't be surprised at what happened next. A second king landed on the river, drawing a big simultaneous, "Awwww!" from the crowd of spectators standing elbow-to-elbow on the rail just behind Kim.

Runner-runner is enough to seal Kim's fate, and she has been sent to the rail a few tables shy of the money. "And we've lost one of our very favorite players," Tournament Director Danny McDonagh said.

There are now three ladies left in the field, and they are all at Table 7 together.

Mt. Mazunin

Mikhail Mazunin and Timothy Cherep had already gotten 100,000 chips into the middle when Mazunin moved all in. Already the tournament chip leader, he was putting the decision to Cherep for his tournament life. And what an agonizing decision. Cherep would still have nearly 90,000 if he folded. He stood up, paced back and forth, and sat back down again. He even took of his hat for the first time in two days. His hands shook as he counted out his stack. Finally he stood back up and folded, flipping over the {K-Clubs}. Mazunin scooped the huge pot and when he finished stacking it all, he was up to 250,000.

Huge Pot for Paulsen

Kai Paulsen
Kai Paulsen

From early position, Ramon Cserei raised to 5,000. Action folded all the way around to Kai Paulsen in the big blind. He was the last to act preflop, but gave Cserei some action with a call.

The two players took a paired flop of {10-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}. Paulsen checked and Cserei fired a continuation bet of 8,000. Paulsen then check-raised to 18,000, wanting to play for more. Cserei took only a brief few moments and then announced that he was all in. With a big sigh, Paulsen made the call. He was calling off his remaining stack of just under 100,000 so this pot was crucial to his tournament. It was also massive.

Paulsen tabled the {A-Spades}{6-Spades} for trip sixes. He had out-flopped the {J-Clubs}{J-Spades} of Cserei. Cserei would need to find a jack on the turn or river or he'd be out a massive chunk of his stack.

The turn brought the {4-Spades} and was no help to Cserei. The river completed the board with the {7-Clubs} and once again, no help for Cserei. He was knocked all the way down to just 30,000 chips after sending over the money. Paulsen now has over 200,000 chips and has catapulted himself to one of the top spots on the board.

Carron Bounced

Action was checked by one player and Patrick Carron on the flop of {J-Spades}{7-Hearts}{7-Spades}. The turn brought the {J-Diamonds} and the player checked to Carron once again. Carron fired a bet of 6,000 and was called. After the {10-Diamonds} fell on the turn, the player checked to Carron again. Carron fired all in and the player called with the {J-Clubs}{3-Hearts} for a full house. Carron mucked his hand and exited to the rail.

The trip to Macau wasn't a total failure for Carron. Despite not cashing in the Main Event, he won the High Roller event for a nice payday.
