After seven tough levels of poker, the first of two Day 1 flights has come to an end here at the 2012 PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Melbourne Main Event. A total of 98 players ponied up the $5,000 buy-in and at the end of the night, 65 had survived. Of those players it was Brendon Rubie who managed to bag up the largest stack, as he will now take 103,575 in chips into Saturday’s Day 2.

It was an extremely stacked field that took their seats tonight, with some of the best players in the region partaking in the action. These include the 2012 Aussie Millions champion Oliver Speidel, David Allan, Benn Skender, Liam O’Rourke, Australian Poker Hall of Fame members Jason Gray and Gary Benson and Team PokerStars Pros Roy Bhasin and Raymond Wu. Of these players, Gray, Allan and Speidel weren’t able to survive the night, while the rest are still in contention.

One of the toughest tables we have seen on the tour emerged early in the evening, with Kristian Lunardi, Jackie Glazier, Brendon Rubie, Tom Grigg and Jay Kinkade all being seated at the same table. Of those players, Glazier was the first player to hit the rail, falling to the might of Grigg. Apart from Glazier, all of these prominent Australian poker players managed to survive the night

Some of the other players who survived the night and secured a Day 2 berth include Oliver Gill, Mitch Carle, Didier Guerin, Tim English, Ricky Kroesen and Wayne Bentley. Joining Rubie at the top of the chip counts are the likes of 2010 ANZPT champion Michael Kanaan, Will Jones and Andy Lee. A full list of surviving players and chip counts will be posted once they are made available.

Be sure to join us from 12:10 PM local time tomorrow as we bring you all the live coverage from Day 1b of the APPT Melbourne Main Event. Until then!

Glazier Falls To Grigg's Might

Jackie Glazier - eliminated.
Jackie Glazier - eliminated.

Tom Grigg would be considered to most people to be a "loose" player. At the very least, he is a very active player. Unfortunately for Jackie Glazier, she has run into Grigg at the wrong moment, with Grigg waking up with a big hand very recently.

The end of Glazier's tournament began when an under the gun player opened the pot with a small raise. Glazier was next to act and three-bet it to 1,600. Grigg then four-bet to 3,700 and with the player who opened out of the way, Glazier would five-bet to 6,600. Grigg studies his opponent and then made the call.

Flop: {6-Spades}{q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

Glazier quickly tumbled out a bet of 8,000 here - a huge majority of her remaining stack. Grigg then put out a large stack of 5,000-denomination chips and Glazier called off her stack.

Glazier: {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}
Grigg: {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

The turn and river brought no miracle jack for Jackie and it was all over early here on Day 1a of the APPT Melbourne Main Event.
