After seven tough levels of poker, the first of two Day 1 flights has come to an end here at the 2012 PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour Melbourne Main Event. A total of 98 players ponied up the $5,000 buy-in and at the end of the night, 65 had survived. Of those players it was Brendon Rubie who managed to bag up the largest stack, as he will now take 103,575 in chips into Saturday’s Day 2.
It was an extremely stacked field that took their seats tonight, with some of the best players in the region partaking in the action. These include the 2012 Aussie Millions champion Oliver Speidel, David Allan, Benn Skender, Liam O’Rourke, Australian Poker Hall of Fame members Jason Gray and Gary Benson and Team PokerStars Pros Roy Bhasin and Raymond Wu. Of these players, Gray, Allan and Speidel weren’t able to survive the night, while the rest are still in contention.
One of the toughest tables we have seen on the tour emerged early in the evening, with Kristian Lunardi, Jackie Glazier, Brendon Rubie, Tom Grigg and [Removed:505] all being seated at the same table. Of those players, Glazier was the first player to hit the rail, falling to the might of Grigg. Apart from Glazier, all of these prominent Australian poker players managed to survive the night
Some of the other players who survived the night and secured a Day 2 berth include Oliver Gill, Mitch Carle, Didier Guerin, Tim English, Ricky Kroesen and Wayne Bentley. Joining Rubie at the top of the chip counts are the likes of 2010 ANZPT champion Michael Kanaan, Will Jones and Andy Lee. "One outer," Tom Grigg said after the board had brought an ace. Apparently two other players had folded an ace, and the all-in player got pretty lucky in order to stay alive!

The tournament clock has been paused and the players have been told there will be three more hands at each table before the chips are bagged up for the night.
Kristian Lunardi opened the action to 1,200 preflop and received calls from Steve Goodridge on his left and Tom Grigg in the big blind. The dealer turned over a 
flop and all three players checked.
On the 
turn, Grigg led for 1,800 and both his opponents called. A would complete the board on the river and again Grigg bet, this time firing out 4,600. Lunardi and Goodridge both called, bringing forth a showdown.
"Well, that didn't work," said Grigg as he mucked his cards.
Lunardi tabled 
at this point, enough to send Goodridge's 
and plenty of chips into his stack.
Wayne Bentley was knocked down by Oliver Gill, but he just managed to double up. Bentley told us how his opponent raised to 3,000, and he made it 9,000 to go. The action got back to Bentley's opponent, who moved all in for 57,000.

. His opponent had 
, and Bentley doubled up after the board brought mere blanks.
Tom Grigg was in great shape to eliminate one opponent, holding 
against the all-in player's 
. The player got his 8,800-chip stack in preflop and would need plenty of help after the dealer turned over a 
flop. That help would come on the turn, putting Grigg's opponent in front. However, Grigg had a huge amount of outs at this point and the 
was one of them, sending Grigg the pot and sending the player home.
A players in the under-the-gun position just moved all in for his final 12,200, and Liam O'Rourke called two seats over. The action got folded to Kristian Lunardi in the big blind, and he took a serious look at his cards. After two seconds he started laughing, and it was clear he did this just to throw off O'Rourke a bit.
