Chew on that River Bet

Level 11 : 700/1,400, 200 ante
Stevan Chew
Stevan Chew

Stevan Chew, who cashed in the High Roller earlier this week for HK$1,037,000, has dropped down to 31,400 after folding to a river shove form Andy Chan.

He opened to 2,800 from under the gun and Chan defended his big blind to see a {5-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} flop appear. Chan check-called 3,000 before leading out for 3,000 on the {9-Spades} river. Chew called and the river came as the {4-Clubs}. Chan wasted little time in moving all in for 33,700. Chew gave it a good deal of thought before admitting defeat with a fold.

Kuzmin Makes Big Call to Bust Juanda

Level 11 : 700/1,400, 200 ante

Reigning EPT Barcelona champion John Juanda has been eliminated after Alexander Kuzmin picked off his big river bluff.

The board read {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{q-Spades} and more than 50,000 chips lay in the middle of the table. Juanda was in the big blind and moved all in for 42,100. Kuzmin was in the hijack and went in the tank. He took several minutes before sliding his stack, worth a little more, forward to indicate a call.

Juanda nodded and pointed at Kuzmin while saying, "You got it." He opened {q-Diamonds}{j-Spades} knowing full well that his hand wasn't good. Kuzmin tabled {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for a flush and raked in the big pot.

"Sick call!" said table mate Jordan Westmorland.

Mahoney Builds a House, Locks Juanda Out

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

Patrick Mahoney and John Juanda have both been accumulating chips of late, the latter lost a few to the former just now though.

The turn was out and the board read {10-Clubs}{3-Spades}{j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. Mahoney checked from the big blind and called after Juanda bet 12,500 from the button. The river was the {9-Clubs} and both players checked. A sneaky Mahoney opened {10-Spades}{9-Spades} for a full house and Juanda mucked.

Chan Flushed Away

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

Terrence Chan got his chips in good but was rivered to bust.

David Benefield opened to 2,600 and was called in three spots, including Chan in the big blind. The flop spread {8-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{7-Spades} and the action checked to a player in the hijack who bet 3,600. Chan raised up to 8,500 and his opponent called after Benefield and one other folded. The turn was the {q-Hearts} and Chan checked and then snap called all in for 29,800 when his opponent set him in.

Chan opened {5-Spades}{6-Spades} for a straight and his opponent revealed {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for straight and flush draws. The river was the {5-Hearts} and Chan made a swift exit once the dealer confirmed he was covered.

Kuzmin Takes Out Lampropulos in Three Way All In

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 100 ante

Maria Lampropulos shoved all in and Alexander Kuzmin quickly followed. A third player snap called after both shoves and showed {a-Spades}{a-Clubs}, he had both Kuzmin and Lampropulos covered.

Lampropulos had {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} and was the shortest of the stacks, while Kuzmin had {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}. When he saw is opponent's aces, Kuzmin shook his head at his unfortunate predicament. The board changed his fortunes when it ran out {k-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{2-Spades}{j-Spades}{q-Hearts}, giving Kuzmin a full house and knocking Lampropulos out of the tournament.
