Dong Il Kim Takes Overall Lead After Day 1b of APPT9 Manila

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Dong Il Kim Claimed the Overnight Lead
Dong Il Kim Claimed the Overnight Lead

As expected, Day 1b of the PHP 50,000 PokerStars.net Asia Pacific Poker Tour stop at the City of Dreams in Manila turned out to be even bigger as the first starting flight. Once registration was officially closed at the start of level six, the screens showed 325 entries for Day 1b to create an overall field of 585 entries. Out of those, 417 were unique players and the rest consisted of multiple bullets throughout the two starting days.

The largest international Main Event ever held in the Philippines was created after besting the previous record of 430 back in 2010, which was also set by the APPT stop in Manila. Expectations for the event were shattered and overall the poker festival boasted incredibly satisfying numbers.

"This is going to change the way people perceive poker in the Philippines." said Gerardo 'Hill' Alim, the PokerStars LIVE Manila Poker Room Manager. "I'm blown away by the turnout in the Main Event which was truly international with 41 countries represented."

"But the preliminary side events also had more than a thousand players and there are still more side events over the weekend. The City of Dreams Manila has been an amazing supporter of PokerStars and the feedback from players has been outstanding."

The top 72 spots are rewarded with at least PHP 89,800 whereas the winner will be walking home with impressive PHP 6,016,250 on Sunday evening, the payday also includes a 2015 ACOP Main Event entry worth HKD 100,000 as well.

A total of 41 different countries participated in the event with the local heroes representing the most (92) followed by Japan (82) and Korea (58). Meanwhile, 196 of the 585 entrants are PokerStars players who either bought into the event or qualified online. Leading the field of 100 survivors after nine levels of Day 1b is Dong Il Kim of Korea with 242,700 followed by Australian poker pro Aaron Lim (201,800) and Shinobu Tanaka (178,700). Similar to the previous starting day, a Norwegian made a run for the headlines and Svein Jorgen Kristensen peaked at more than 200,000 before bagging up 168,300.

Kim was already among the bigger stacks when his top pair and flush draw cracked the pocket kings of Weiyie Zhang, yet another flush made him the top dog and eventually the overall chip leader.

Lim on the other hand arrived toward the top of the counts just prior to the first break and then consistently ran up his stack before going on a heater late in the day. Winfred Yu fell victim to that run in one of the last hands of the day and will come back on Saturday with his Day 1a stack.

Two PokerStars Team Pros participated on Day 1b after failing to bag up chips the previous night. Aditya Agarwal fired two bullets and was sent to the rail by Jose Drilon, while Keisuke Hikosaka took care of Team Pro Kosei Ichinose. APPT9 Macau finalist Florencio Campomanes, Marcuss Liow, David Steicke, Henrik Tollefsen and Gab Yong Kim were also among the more well known casualties.

Notables that made it through on the second starting day include defending champion Thanh Ha Duong (99,500); Manuel Blaschke (90,500), who dominated the first five levels; APPT8 Seoul champion Chane Kampanatsanyakorn (83,200); Lester Edoc (81,000); Filipino poker godfather Wally Sombero (62,900); APPT8 Manila finalist Rajeev Kanjani (52,800); and Yaxi Zhu (36,100).

No survivors bagged twice, meaning a combined field of 175 hopefuls will return to the tables at 2 p.m. local time on Saturday for Level 10 with blinds at 700/1,400/200. More than 100 of them will leave the tournament empty handed while the field works it way to the money. Lim Busts Yu At the Very End

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Winfred Yu
Winfred Yu

Winfred Yu's attempt to run up a bigger stack than the 19,800 of Day 1a has been crushed by Aaron Lim only a few hands before the bagging and tagging was supposed to take place. Yu three-bet shoved for 18,800 with the {A-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} and was eventually called by the Australian with {Q-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

The board ran out {3-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{4-Spades}{3-Spades}{K-Clubs} and the very last community card sent Yu to the rail while Lim may very well end up as chip leader of Day 1b.

Kim Busts Zhang and Becomes Chip Leader Contender

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Weiyi Zhang
Weiyi Zhang

The action started with a raise by Dong Il Kim from under the gun for 2,300 just before the end of the penultimate level. Weiyi Zhang three-bet to 6,000 out of middle position and Kim asked the Chinese if he had any yellow 5,000 chips left. That was denied and then the Korean opted for the call.

On the {2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop, Kim check-raised all in and Zhang called quickly after having made a continuation bet of 6,000 with a stack of around 25,000. Zhang flipped over the {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs} while Kim held top pair and the flush draw in {J-Hearts}{9-Hearts}. The {8-Hearts} turn brought exactly said flush, but the win wasn't guaranteed yet as the Chinese had the higher heart in his hand.

The dealer burned and turned the {8-Clubs} river and Zhang quickly left the table. Kim was congratulated to "feel the rush" and complained that he had been rather card dead before and his best hand had been ace-queen.

Hwang Busts Liow

Level 7 : 400/800, 100 ante
Marcuss Liow
Marcuss Liow

After a three-way flop of {4-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}, Wally Sombero led for 4,000 out of the small blind and Seokchan Hwang called from one seat over. Initial preflop aggressor Marcuss Liow moved all in for another 13,200 on top and Sombero folded, later claiming in table chat that he had the {K-}{Q-}.

Liow: {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Hwang: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

The {7-Hearts} turn was a blank and same applied for the {3-Diamonds} river to send Liow to the rail. Hwang already had quite a few chips before and is now even deeper stacked.

Drilon Busts Agarwal

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Aditya Agarwal
Aditya Agarwal

PokerStars Team Pro Aditya Argawal had indeed busted the first bullet and re-entered again before the end of level five, but the next attempt wasn't any more successful either. Jose "Boyet" Drilon raised to 1,200 and was called by two players before the Indian moved all in for 8,600.

Only Drilon called with the {9-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and Argawal's {K-Hearts}{J-Spades} held up until the {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{8-Hearts} turn before the {7-Clubs} river sent him to the rail.

Hikosaka Cleaning Up

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Kosei Ichinose
Kosei Ichinose

Florencio Campomanes confirmed the eliminations of Kosei Ichinose and Henrik Tollefsen, both sent their chips to Keisuke Hikosaka. The Norwegian three-bet shoved his short stack and received two callers including the Japanese before the active players checked down a {10-}{7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{X-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} board. Tollefsen's {K-Spades}{Q-Spades} ended up second-best to the {8-Diamonds}{8-} of Hikosaka.

And then, there was an open raise and a flat-call before the PokerStars Team Pro got his 19,000 chips in with the {A-}{Q-} to lose a flip versus pocket jacks. It was somewhat cruel as Hikosaka had flopped a full house and Ichinose was given a worthless straight on the turn to rub it in.

Manuel Blaschke

Table three had not been broken, yet the massive stack of Manuel Blaschke was not there anymore and his seat occupied by someone else. It took some time to find the Austrian and he had been moved to table 20, where the current stack has even grown further to become the first player on six digits on Day 1b.
