Konstantin Pogodin Bags the Most on Day 1b; Celina Lin Among Big Stacks

Level 13 : 1,000/2,500, 2,500 ante
Konstantin Pogodin
Konstantin Pogodin

After the first break on Day 1b, a new attendance record for a PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Korea Main Event had been set and once the registration for the ₩1,800,000 ($1,586) buy-in was closed, the 449 entries of the previous year were surpassed by a landslide thanks to an additional 359 entries on the second and final starting day.

Along with the 222 entries of Day 1a, a field of 581 entries has emerged and the record for the biggest event on Korean soil was narrowly missed. Day 1b saw 94 hopefuls advance and combined with the 59 Day 1a survivors, a total of 153 players remain in contention at the Paradise City Casino in Incheon, South Korea.

More than half of the remaining field will leave empty-handed when the cards go back in the air on Saturday, April 13th, 2019, as of 1 p.m. local time, as just 72 spots receive a portion of the ₩912,983,400 ($803,425) prize pool with ₩3,290,000 ($2,895) as min-cash and a top prize of ₩198,100,000 ($174,32).

Best-positioned to lift the trophy for the winner shots on Sunday thus far is Russia's Konstantin Pogodin, who skyrocketed to the lead in the penultimate level of the night. Pogodin got his above-average stack in with a king-high flushdraw on a ten-high board and was called by an opponent with a pair of nines. Instead of hitting a diamond, the Russian went the more difficult path of runner-runner straight and went on to boost his stack further after that to bag up an impressive 359,500.

Celina Lin
Celina Lin will enter Day 2 with a big stack

In second place after Day 1b sits Ching Wei Chen with 295,000, followed by Kilian Loeffler (269,500), Weiran Pu (243,000) and Xinglong Huang (234,500). PokerStars Ambassador Celina Lin entered mid-way through the registration period and immediately doubled before running up a top-ten stack of 186,500, Randy Lew also made it through with an above-average stack of 113,000.

Other big stacks and notables that punched their tickets for Day 2 include Gang Wang (186,000), Jack Wu (158,500), Sparrow Cheung (128,500), Patrick Liang (108,500), Alex Lee (97,000), Georges Georgiou (92,500), Victor Chong (85,500), Danny Tang (85,000), Wayne Zhang (76,000), and 2018 APPT Manila champion Wilson Lim (64,000).

Less fortunate and among the long list of players to run out of chips on Day 1b were such big names as Jun Obara, Natalie Teh, Guoliang Wei, Norihiro Otani, Yuki Ko, Robert Glasspool, Wai Kiat Lee, Single-Day High Roller third-place finisher Daniel Smiljkovic, Irshat Shaykhov, two-time festival event champion Yan Li, Iori Yogo and Dong Guo.

The remaining 153 survivors will return to the poker tables at 1 p.m. local time and as of Day 2 and until the conclusion of the event, the level duration will increase to one hour each. Up to ten levels are scheduled for money day in Incheon and the blinds recommence at 1,500-3,000 with a big blind ante of 3,000.

As usual, the PokerNews live reporting team will be on the floor to provide all the action until a champion is crowned.

Konstantin Pogodin
Konstantin Pogodin

Kilian Loeffler had crossed 200,000 in chips some time ago and lost a few chips, and Konstantin Pogodin just skyrocketed into the top spot in a massive clash. With a lot of chips in the middle and the flop showing {10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}, the opponent of Pogodin bet more than half the pot and Pogodin jammed for 95,300.

The call by the big stack with pocket nines followed and Pogodin turned over {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. On the {q-Clubs} turn, Pogodin picked up a ton of extra outs and he indeed for there with the {a-Spades} river to score a massive double up.

Hiroki Moriuchi
Hiroki Moriuchi

Keisuke Hikosaka got his last 21,400 in preflop with {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} against the {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} of Japanese pop singer Hiroki Moriuchi and spiked a set on the board {j-Spades}{8-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{3-Spades} to double.

Shortly after, Yoshihiko Ishidomaru moved all in for 19,000 in the cutoff and was called by the button. Razvan Bengulescu jammed for 44,800 in the big blind and the button called to put two players at risk.

Yoshihiko Ishidomaru: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}
Razvan Bengulescu: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
Button: {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

"Just a king, that's all I want," Bengulescu said and his wish was granted on a board of {k-Spades}{5-Spades}{4-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}.

Bai Sends Obara Out

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Jun Obara
Jun Obara

Ran Hao Bai called from early position, Kelvin Beattie called in the hijack and Jun Obara bumped it up to 3,100 from the cutoff. Both opponents called and the dealer spread out {10-Clubs}{9-Spades}{2-Spades} on the flop.

Bai bet 6,000, Beattie folded and Obara moved all in for around 16,000. Bai called and players turned over their hands. Obara showed {a-Spades}{8-Spades} for the nut flush draw and Bai tabled {a-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for middle pair.

The {7-Diamonds} came down as a turn card and Obara now picked up a straight draw to go with his flush draw. A {5-Clubs} landed on the river and Obara failed to connect as he was eliminated by Bai's pair of nines.

Matsumoto Busts to Shiokawa

Level 2 : 100/100, 100 ante
Yuzo Shiokawa
Yuzo Shiokawa

At the very end of the first level, there were just eight big blinds in the pot with the flop reading {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades} and a raising war broke out between two Japanese players. Shinya Matsumoto bet, Yuzo Shiokawa raised to 1,500 and Matsumoto clicked it back to 4,000. Shiokawa made it 10,000 to go and called the shove of his opponent for the following showdown.

Yuzo Shiokawa: {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Shinya Matsumoto: {a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}

The {7-Spades} turn changed nothing and the {4-Hearts} river paired the board. Both stacks were counted and Shiokawa doubled for 29,500, which left Matsumoto with 100. Those vanished in the next hand when his {10-Spades}{9-Clubs} was dominated by none other than Shiokawa with {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}, who flopped trips on a board {k-Hearts}{k-Spades}{2-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{j-Spades}.
