JJ Liu Wins The PokerStars.net Asia-Pacific Poker Tour Macau High Roller Event (HK$1,420,000)

Level 19 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante
JJ Liu, APPT Macau High Roller Champion
JJ Liu, APPT Macau High Roller Champion

After an action-packed day in the 2014 PokerStars.net Asia-Pacific Poker Tour High Roller, it was JJ Liu who took home the trophy and the first-place prize of HK$1,420,000 (approx. $183,000).

The tournament started the last day with 22 players and the final table of nine was set in just over two hours. Unfortunately, two more players needed to exit the tournament before the payouts would begin, and one of those was Kevin Clark, whose final-table appearance was a quick one as he was eliminated in just 10 minutes.

The tournament stayed eight-handed for about two hours, as no one wanted to be the one to leave without a paycheck. Eventually, it was Yuguang Li who finished in eighth place and the pace of the tournament was set to pick back up again.

It didn’t take long after the bubble burst for the first in-the-money elimination to happen. In fact, Zongyao Zhang (7th place - HK$333,950), Huidong Gu (6th place - HK$388,000), and Magnus Karlsson (5th place - 444,000) were eliminated within 10 minutes of each other.

Soon following those quick eliminations, Rui Cao hit the rail (4th place - HK$610,000).

After Cao's bust, a deal between the final three players — Quan Zhou, JJ Liu, and Chen Wang — was discussed. There was some controversy around the deal because Quan Zhou wanted the first-place points towards the Asia Poker Player of the Year Race, but in the end a deal was agreed upon.

Here's a look at the deal numbers:

NameChip CountDeal Amount (HKD)Deal Amount (USD)
Quan Zhou2,745,000HK$1,275,000$164,445
Chen Wang1,650,000HK$1,078,000$139,037
JJ Liu1,505,000HK$1,047,000$135,038

In addition to the agreed upon amounts, there was HK$373,00 left for the winner — certainly an amount worth playing for. It wasn't long after that Liu doubled through Wang and left him crippled. From there, he was eliminated in third place, setting up a heads-up battle between Zhou and Liu.

During the one-hour heads-up battle, the chip lead changed a few times, but it was soon after Liu doubled up through Zhou for a second time that she took a commanding lead and went on to claim victory.

Quan Zhou Eliminated in 2nd Place (HK$1,275,000)

Level 19 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante
Quan Zhou
Quan Zhou

JJ Liu had her 100,000 big blind in front of her and Quan Zhou, the small blind who was first to act, went all in. Liu wanted an exact count and there was some discussion around the chips in chinese, that we didn't understand. Liu then cut out calling chips and set them to the side. There was some more banter and Liu decided to push her chips into the middle.

Zhou was surprised that Liu made the call and showed his cards to his rail, and everyone started laughing. He then put the cards face up on the table and we saw {8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}. Liu turned over {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}.

The {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} flop was a good one for Liu but gave Zhou and open-ended straight flush draw, which caused some excitement to go through the room. Unfortunately for Zhou and fortunately for Liu, the straight flush didn't materialize when the turn came {9-Clubs} and the {4-Spades} river sent all the tournament chips to JJ Liu.

Liu Doubles Through Wang

Level 17 : 30,000/60,000, 5,000 ante
J.J. Liu
J.J. Liu

In a small blind vs. big blind battle, JJ Liu just completed the big blind from the small. Wang checked his option and the {q-Clubs}{4-Spades}{3-Spades} flop was dealt.

Liu checked to Wang, who bet 100,000. Liu made the call the {5-Spades} came. Liu checked again and this time Wang bet 170,000.

Liu cut out raising chips and pushed 470,000 into the middle. Wang moved all in and Liu called.

Liu: {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}
Wang: {5-Hearts}{3-Clubs}

The {6-Spades} river gave Liu the flush and leaving Wang with just 125,000 behind.

The Bubble Bursts; The Players Are In The Money

Level 15 : 15,000/30,000, 5,000 ante
Quan Zhou, Current Chip Leader
Quan Zhou, Current Chip Leader

Just one minute after the last post, Yuguang Li went in for his final 40,000 from the small blind and it was an automatic call for Quan Zhou in the big.

Zhou: {q-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Li: {j-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}

Li found a jack on the {j-Spades}{k-Diamonds}{4-Spades} board but Zhou had an open-ended straight draw which came with the {9-Spades} turn. The river {5-Clubs} didn't change anything as Li leaves the tournament without a paycheck. The remaining players are all guaranteed at least HK$333,950.

Battle of The Big Stacks

J.J. Liu from Yesterday
J.J. Liu from Yesterday

JJ Liu min-raised from under the gun to 48,000. It folded around to Quan Zhou in the big blind who called the bet. Both players checked the {q-Clubs}{q-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop. Zhou also check the {a-Hearts} turn but Liu took advantage of her position to net 25,000.

Zhou wasn't ready to give up and raised to 95,000 and after some thought and a serious stare down, Liu made the call. Zhou checked the {j-Clubs} river and Liu bet150,000. Zhou tried to get a read from Liu by counting out raising chips but she wasn't giving anything away. Zhou ended up folded and this one goes to Liu.

Torbergsen and Yu Are Gone; Final Table Set

Level 12 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Quan Zhou
Quan Zhou

We didn't witness Torbergsen's elimination but were told Quan Zhou held ace-king and went all in over the top of a bet from Torbergsen on the river. Torbergsen called and Zhou tabled his hand and Torbergsen mucked.

On the other table Winfred Yu went all in with {a-Spades}{7-Hearts} and was ahead of the {a-Diamonds}{5-Spades} from Magnus Karlsson. The board came {7-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{2-Hearts}{8-Spades}{4-Spades} for a rivered straight for Karlsson and the elimination of Yu in 10th place.

This sets up the final table of nine but only seven of those players will be leaving with a paycheck.

The tournament will be paused and players draw for seats and take a quick break. We will be back with a seat draw in a few minutes.

A Pot And a Penalty

Level 11 : 6,000/12,000, 1,000 ante
Quan Zhou
Quan Zhou

There was a 200k pot and a flop of {9-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} already dealt. Quan Zhou, in early position, checked the {4-Clubs} turn to Marius Torbergsen who bet 80,000. Zhou played with his chips a bit and after a short time, made the call.

Zhou again checked when the {7-Diamonds} river came. This time Torbergsen bet 220,000. When action got back to Zhou, he announced all in. Torbergsen was just shaking his head.

After a few short seconds, Zhou called the clock but the tournament director explained that not enough time had lapsed for the clock to be called. Then Zhou took his calling chips, matched them to Torbergsen's bet and pushed the chips into the pot. Then he moved his remaining chips in front of Torbergsen.

Torbergsen ended up folding and Zhou was given a three-hand penalty for aggressive action.

Double Knock Out

Level 10 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Marius Torbergsen
Marius Torbergsen

There was a three-way all in between Marius Torbergsen ({A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}), David Kang ({9-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}) and Evan Mc Niff ({k-}{k-}).

As the chip leader, Torbergsen had both players covered. Kang and Mc Niff were looking for their miracle but sadly for them, Torbergsen's aces held.

While we were watching this hand we also lost Victorino Torres and Jun Zhou from another table.
