Day 1 of The PokerStars.net APPT Macau High Roller Event is Complete. Torbergsen Leads; Yu In Contention

The PokerStars.net Asia-Pacific Poker Tour Macau High Roller Event drew an impressive 59 players who ponied up HK$100,000 (about $13,000) and are in competition for the first-place prize of HK$1,831,000 (about $236,000).

There were nine 40-minute levels played today and Marius Torbergsen emerged as the tournament chip leader with 706,500. His stack is well ahead of 2014 APPT Seoul High Roller Champion Quan Zhou, who ended up the day second in chips with 523,000.

The action was aggressive and fast-paced with building a big stack the name of the game. Only 22 players bagged chips for a day 2 start and that list includes players with some pretty impressive credentials including high-stakes player Winfred Yu (243,500), 2012 Aussie Millions Champion Kenny Wong (230,000), successful tournament player J.J. Liu (214,500) and 2010 APPT Macau Main Event Champion, Victorino Torres (163,000).

Unfortunately it was a short day for 37 players including Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin, JP Kelly, Nick Wong and straight of his 30th-place finish in The Main Event Peter Chan.

Play is schedule to resume tomorrow at 2:20 p.m. local time, when we will be playing until we crown a champion. Make sure and join PokerNews as we bring you all the action as it happens live. We'll see you then.

David Kang opened to 11,000 from under the gun and it folded around to Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin in the small blind. Lin thought for a while and counted her chips. She eventually decided on a raise to 34,000.

With the action back on Kang, he asked to see Lin's chips and eventually put 60,000 in the middle, enough to put Lin all in. Lin stared down Kang trying to get a rid and in the end she decided to go with her hand and was all in.

Lin: {5-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}
Kang: {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}

Upon seeing her opponent's hand, Lin always gracious, tapped the table in appreciation. Another nine came on the flop, all but solidifying Lin's fate and unfortunately, there was no runner runner in her future.

Ken Demlakian

All the money went into the middle with some fanfare between APPT Seoul High Roller Winner Quan Zhou, Ken Demlakian and Geoff Mooney. The commotion brought us over to see the following hands:

Zhou: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Mooney: {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}
Demlakian: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}

Zhou loudly exclaimed his excitement that he was ahead and with each turn of the card, he got a bit louder and bit more excited. His tens held up through the {j-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{7-Spades}{9-Spades}{8-Spades} board and Zhou was responsible for a double knockout.

Straight of his 30th place in The Main Event, Peter Chan took his seat in The High Roller. Unfortunately he didn't fare as well here. He was all in with {a-}{q-} against the {a-}{k-} of Marius Torgbergsen and couldn't find any help.

Nick Wong has just taken his seat in the field. Last years GuangDong Asia Millions Warm Up Champion and a former winner in this event in 2011, Wong has come ready to play.

Finishing just shy of the money in the main event yesterday, he is looking for redemption. The High Roller might be just the event since he has eight top-ten finishes in high-roller events in the last few years.

The HKD $100,000 (~USD $13,000) High Rollers Event is set to begin in about 30 minutes at 6 p.m. local time. As we continue to play down to a final table in the main event, we expect players to make their way over to the registration desk as they are eliminated. This should help provide a solid field for this evening's event.

Last year, the High Roller Event attracted 30 players for a prize pool of HKD $2,821,500 (~USD $363,506). It was Xiao Jia who claimed victory and the first-place prize of HK$1,129,000 (~USD $145,454).

Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin just tweeted she decided to play.

Celina LinI've decided to play the 100k High Roller tonight. Excited! #APPTMacau #HighRoller
