Day 1 of The PokerStars.net APPT Macau High Roller Event is Complete. Torbergsen Leads; Yu In Contention

Level 9 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Winfred Yu

The PokerStars.net Asia-Pacific Poker Tour Macau High Roller Event drew an impressive 59 players who ponied up HK$100,000 (about $13,000) and are in competition for the first-place prize of HK$1,831,000 (about $236,000).

There were nine 40-minute levels played today and Marius Torbergsen emerged as the tournament chip leader with 706,500. His stack is well ahead of 2014 APPT Seoul High Roller Champion Quan Zhou, who ended up the day second in chips with 523,000.

The action was aggressive and fast-paced with building a big stack the name of the game. Only 22 players bagged chips for a day 2 start and that list includes players with some pretty impressive credentials including high-stakes player Winfred Yu (243,500), 2012 Aussie Millions Champion Kenny Wong (230,000), successful tournament player J.J. Liu (214,500) and 2010 APPT Macau Main Event Champion, Victorino Torres (163,000).

Unfortunately it was a short day for 37 players including Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin, JP Kelly, Nick Wong and straight of his 30th-place finish in The Main Event Peter Chan.

Play is schedule to resume tomorrow at 2:20 p.m. local time, when we will be playing until we crown a champion. Make sure and join PokerNews as we bring you all the action as it happens live. We'll see you then.

Play Has Concluded

Level 9 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

Play is complete for the day in The PokerStars.net APPT Macau High Roller Event. The last three hands went by without any casualties and we will be back soon with a recap of the day, the official end of day chip counts and the day 2 seat draw. Stay tuned.

3 More Hands

Level 9 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

The tournament clock has been paused with just over 6 minutes left in level 9. A card was drawn and it was determined that the players will play three more hands before bagging their chips for the night.

Plenty of All Ins But No Callers

Level 9 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

With just about ten minutes to play, players are trying to get as many chips as possible. The all in seems to be the move of the level and it is getting the job done.

Victorino Torres 4-bet all in and JJ Liu was forced to fold. She spent some time contemplating a call and asked Torres if he would show. He responded, "we both show." She started to muck her hand and then reluctantly turned over to get some information. She held ace-jack and was happy that she folded when she saw the queens of Torres.

Then Kenny Wong survived his all in when Hui Dong Gu folded his hand. Magnus Karlsson also survived his all in when Marius Torbergsen was forced to fold to the pressure.

Zheng Falls to Clark

Level 9 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante

The money went in preflop between Alvan Zheng with {a-Spades}{q-Spades} and Kevin Clark holding {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}. The flop didn't provide much help to Zheng when it came {4-Clubs}{2-Spades}{3-Diamonds}. However, the {8-Spades} turn gave Zheng some outs but unfortunately, the {j-Clubs} river wasn't one of them and Zheng's day is done.

Kelly Busts

Level 8 : 3,000/6,000, 500 ante

Action folded around to JP Kelly on the button. He moved all his chips into the middle and was called by Zhang Zong Yao from the big blind. Yao turned over {a-Spades}{8-Clubs} and Kelly held {10-Spades}{9-Diamonds}. The flop pretty much sealed Kelly's fate when it came {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} and the {j-Hearts} turn and {9-Hearts} river sent Kelly to the rail.
