Morgan Struggles For Momentum

Ewan Morgan
Ewan Morgan
After being our very early chip leader today, Ewan Morgan has since struggled to get any momentum today.

In a recent pot in a battle of the blinds, Morgan called the 3,500 bet of his opponent in the small blind on a {3-Spades}{J-Spades}{7-Hearts} flop.

The turn was the {8-Hearts} and again Morgan called the 4,000 chip bet from his opponent.

The river landed the {6-Diamonds} and the small blind moved all in for his last 6,000 chips. Morgan thought for a moment before sighing "You can have it" and tossing his cards into the muck. Morgan slips back to 15,000 chips.

Pham Can't Beat Eights

Eights are lucky in China. For Huy Pham, however, they proved very unlucky. On the turn of a {K-Spades} {8-Hearts} {7-Clubs} {A-Spades} board, the small blind bet 3,000 and Pham called.

When the river came {2-Clubs}, the small blind bet 3,500, leaving himself 6,000 behind. Pham raised it up to 7,500. The small blind called with {8-Clubs} {9-Clubs}, a hand that Pham couldn't beat. He flashed the {7-Diamonds} before mucking.

A Strong Play For Dodds

During the break, Joel Dodds recalled a hand to us that led him doubling up.

Dodds decided to make a move after an opponent opened with a raise, and moved all in holding {7-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. His opponent made the call with {A-?}{K-?} but Dodds paired his seven on the flop to now sit with around 32,000 chips.

Two Tales of Two Pair

Grant Levy is still near the top.
Grant Levy is still near the top.
Two pair giveth to Grant Levy, and two pair taketh away.

First, Levy hit top two pair with {A-Clubs} {J-Spades} against Daniel Schreiber on a board of {9-Spades} {J-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds}. Levy bet 3,000 on the river and was raised to 6,000 by Schreiber. Levy made the call and won the pot when Schreiber tabled {A-Hearts} {5-Hearts} for a smaller two pair.

A few hands later, however, two pair proved disastrous for Levy. With the board showing {K-Diamonds} {2-Clubs} {4-Spades} {8-Spades}, Levy got all in three ways with a short-stacked player and with Markus Mansour. The short stack had {K-?} {5-?} for a pair of kings; Levy tabled {K-Hearts} {8-Hearts} for top two. The only problem was that Mansour had flopped a set of fours. The river came {J-Spades} and missed everyone.

After these hands, Levy's stack fell back to 50,000 while Mansour climbed to that same 50,000 mark.

Powell Can't Win Race

Julian Powell lost a third of his stack on a recent hand. After a preflop raise, a player in late position reraised all in for 20,000. Powell, sitting in the small blind, had a tough decision holding {A-Diamonds} {K-Hearts}. Perhaps taking inspiration from this Chinese gambling mecca, he decided to gamble and made the call. The late position player had {9-Hearts} {9-Clubs} for a classic race situation. Pocket nines held up when the board ran out {3-Hearts} {5-Hearts} {J-Spades} {5-Spades} {7-Hearts}.

With that loss, Powell has dipped to 48,000 in chips.

Timex Still Ticking

Marc Cooper, short of chips, open-shoved preflop for about 9,000. Action folded to Mike "Timex" McDonald, short of chips himself. He peeked down and made a snap call with pocket kings, a hand that was a significant favorite over Cooper's pocket fours. Neither player connected with the board that ran out {9-Clubs} {A-Hearts} {7-Spades} {3-Hearts} {10-Diamonds}.

Cooper was eliminated on the hand. McDonald is still short but now has 21,000 chips to work with.
