Benson Survives, Gutch Gone

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 0 ante

Australian Poker Hall of Famer Gary Benson is still hanging in there, having just doubled up through John Haddad, but Ryan Gutch wasn't so luck and as such, we're down to 32 players in this event.

The player under the gun limped in before Benson raised to 4,500. Haddad called from the hijack, as did the UTG player to make it three-handed to a flop of {6-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}.

The UTG player checked, Benson moved all-in for 1,800 and Haddad raised to 11,800 to force the UTG player out of the way. Benson showed {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs} but found himself in a world of hurt against Haddad, who tabled {Q-Spades}{10-Spades}{10-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for middle set. The turn of the {8-Hearts} helped nobody, but Benson managed to hit the {K-Spades} on the river for Broadway and double up to 18,000!

A short time later, Gutch moved the last of his money into the middle before the flop holding {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} but ran into the {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Spades} of Mig Agassim, which improved to a set on the board of {6-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}, sending Gutch packing.

Trask Back on Track

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 0 ante

The action has slowed down significantly as we edge closer to the money (14 places away, to be exact), but Grant Trask is now on a stack worth more than 125,000 after eliminating Mark Furness.

Trask raised to 3,500 from middle position and both Matthew Konnecke and Ali Askoy called from the hijack and cutoff positions respectively before Furness reraised all-in for 12,500 from the small blind. Trask called, Konnecke folded and Askoy called to make it heads-up to a sidepot on a flop of {Q-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{9-Spades}.

Trask deliberated before pushing out a bet worth 32,000. Askoy went deep into the tank and after about three minutes, he reluctantly let his hand go, leaving Trask and Furness to show down their hands:

Furness: {A-Spades}{A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{2-Clubs}
Trask: {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{5-Spades}{3-Spades}

There was little to no hope for Furness; despite the turn of the {5-Spades} giving him a few more outs, the river {3-Spades} sealed the deal for Trask and Furness' fate. Trask is now up to 129,000 in chips.

Demetriou Chips Up, Heskin's Hanging Around

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 0 ante

It's been a great run for Harry Demetriou in this level, as he's now sitting on more than 130,000 after eliminating Paul Barrass.

The action folded around to Dave Heskin who raised to 6,000 from under the gun before Barrass reraised all-in for 18,500 from the button. Demetriou pushed Heskin out with a four-bet worth 46,000 from the big blind before showing his hand down against Barrass:

Demetriou: {A-Spades}{K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}
Barrass: {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Board: {10-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}

It was merely a bump in the road for Heskin, who was able to recuperate those lost chips (and then some) after sending Mike Ryan to the rail. Ryan raised to 4,200 from under the gun and Demetriou called, as did Heskin to go three ways to a flop that read {K-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}. Ryan pushed his last 2,100 into the middle and Demetriou called, only to quickly fold after Heskin raised to 22,800, flashing {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} before sending his hand into the muck.

Demetriou was right to fold, as Heskin revealed {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs} for the nut flush against Ryan's {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}. The turn and river were an uneventful {5-Hearts}, {7-Spades} and Ryan was eliminated. Heskin is back up to 47,000 in chips.

Chu-Chu! All Aboard the Haibo Express!

Level 9 : 600/1,200, 0 ante

With only minutes to go until the dinner break, 2007 Melbourne Poker Championship Main Event winner Haibo Chu has scored a bucketload of chip, moving up to 150,000 through Grant Trask!

After a raised pot preflop, Trask checked his option on a flop of {8-Spades}{A-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}, as did Peter Karam from the hijack position before Chu led out for 13,800. Trask called and Karam folded, leaving it heads-up to the turn of the {j-Hearts}.

Trask check-called Chu's bet of 28,800 before both players checked down the river {8-Clubs}; Trask then mucked furiously after Chu tabled {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{Q-Hearts}{6-Spades} for top pair. As frustrating as it must be, Trask will have to compose himself and focus on rebuilding his stack after the dinner break, but he's still travelling nicely on 45,000.
