There Will Be No Title Defense; Rettenmaier Eliminates Speidel

Dan Kelly was under the gun and raised to 800. Oliver Speidel then moved all in for 9,125, which cleared the field all the way back to Marvin Rettenmaier in the small blind. He asked for a count on Kelly, who had about 15,000 behind, and then moved all in over the top. Kelly flashed {A-}{K-} and folded.

Showdown
Speidel: {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}
Rettenmaier: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}

Speidel, who defeated a field of 86 players last year in this very event to capture a $100,595 prize, was in big trouble and in desperate need of a ten. Unfortunately for him, it was not meant to be as the board ran out {2-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{3-Diamonds}. Speidel, who finished runner up in the $1,100 NLHE Shootout the other day, was eliminated shy of the dinner break.

The Hand of the Year Between Dan Smith and Billy Jordanou

Sometimes you witness hands that are just too sick to be true. Online you might have seen it a couple of times but in a live poker tournament a hand like this hardly ever shows up. It started off pretty normal with a 2,900 chip shove from Dan Smith who was under the gun. Billy Jordanou, who was to his left, made the call after which the remaining players folded.

Dan Smith{6-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}
Billy Jordanou{J-Clubs}{J-Spades}

Smith sighed and knew his chances of survival were slim. The flop brought out {5-Hearts}{6-Spades}{6-Hearts} and Smith started laughing just like the rest of the table. Then the {J-Hearts} hit the turn and Smith said, "I would totally be awesome it if you hit the jack". And then the poker room exploded as the {J-Diamonds} hit the river. All the players watching the action went crazy and everyone ran over to the table. Smith just got knocked out in brutal fashion and people will be talking about this hand for a very long time!

Reiman Running The Tables

Ty Reiman continues to win chips and he's now in second place behind Michael Pedley. Reiman told us he got very lucky with queens against kings when he managed to hit a queen on the river in a 35,000 pot. Later on he won kings against ace-queen for another 20,000 chip pot giving him a very nice 70,000 stack.

Karamalikis Sends Rosen Packing

Local favorite Jonathan Karamalikis just busted Jamie Rosen and he told us the action as we barely caught the board. Karamalikis raised from the button and Rosen called after which the flop brought out {3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. Rosen check-called 800 and the turn was the {6-Clubs}. Rosen checked once more and the Aussie bet 2,000 after which Rosen decided to shove. "I'm not even sure how much it was" Karamalikis said afterwards. He called right away and turned over {3-Spades}{7-Diamonds}. Rosen had {K-Clubs}{5-Clubs} and didn't improve as the river was the {K-Hearts}.

Meanwhile we also lost Jay Kinkade and German pro Marvin Rettenmaier is doing very well with 50,000 in chips.

Benvenuti Doubles Just Before Dinner

In the last hand before the dinner break, Ty Reiman raised to 800 under the gun only to have Michael Benvenuti, who was next to act, move all in for 10,675. Action folded back around to Reiman and he made a quick call.

Showdown
Benvenuti: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Reiman: {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}

Benvenuti was in a dominating spot, especially after the {5-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} flop; however, things are never easy as the {10-Clubs} turn gave Reiman a flush draw. The dealer burned and revealed the river . . . {10-Hearts}. Benvenuti survived with a nice pre-dinner double.
