Byron Kaverman Leads a Stack Field in the LK Boutique $250K Challenge

Level 6 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Byron Kaverman
Byron Kaverman

The 2015 GPI Player of the Year, Byron Kaverman, bagged up the chip lead after the first day of the LK Boutique $250,000 Challenge at the 2016 Aussie Millions. Kaverman leads a field of 12 survivors with 708,000, with late registration and reentries still possible until the start of Day 2 tomorrow.

The day started with four players, Igor Kurganov, Ben Tollerene, Paul Newey and Fedor Holz, and the latter was the first player to get knocked out. Holz fell to Newey when he ended up all in on the turn holding both straight a flush draws against the pocket aces of his opponent. A blank river sent Holz back to the cashier, and he reentered shortly thereafter.

Phil Ivey was the fifth player to enter the event, which he's managed to win in 2012, 2014 and 2015. These three victories are also Ivey's three biggest cashes, totaling AU$8,205,000. Day 1 wasn't kind to Ivey, since despite getting a late double up through Holz, he bagged up just 52,500. On the last hand of the night, Ivey was crippled by Steve O'Dwyer, who bagged up 388,500. Holz meanwhile took 440,500 to Day 2, on his second bullet.

Newey held the chip lead for quite some time on Day 1, and he was the first player to eclipse the 500,000-chip mark, but in the end he bagged up 395,500 chips. Kaverman started his ascent by hitting a flush against O'Dwyer, followed by another flush versus Erik Seidel. Kaverman busted Seidel after getting it in with a pair and a flush draw against Seidel's overpair, and the river completed Kaverman's hand.

Seidel busted out just after Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier hit the rail, Mercier could not find a pair on the board after getting it in with ace-queen versus Holz's pocket nines.

With 15 total entries up until this point, and 12 players remaining, the prize pool sits at AU $3,675,000, meaning that the payouts are as following. Three places will get paid until there are 21 entries into this tournament, after which a fourth spot will be added.

PlacePayout
1AU $1,837,500
2AU $1,102,500
3AU $735,000

Play will continue at 2:30 p.m. local time on Monday, and registration will close when cards are back in the air. PokerNews will have coverage all throughout the conclusion of this event, and with that the 2016 Aussie Millions.

Ivey Crippled in Last Hand of the Night

Level 6 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

In the last hand of the night, Phil Ivey, who is looking to win this event for the third year in a row (and fourth out of five year), opened for 11,000 from the cutoff and Steve O'Dwyer three-bet to 34,000 from the button. Both blinds folded and Ivey moved all in. O'Dwyer called off for 189,000 total and the cards were turned up.

Ivey: {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
O'Dwyer: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

Ivey was way behind, but the {10-Spades}{a-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop did give him a gutshot to Broadway. The {9-Clubs} turn gave him more outs as a club would give him a flush, but the {5-Spades} river was not what he needed.

Since it was the last hand of the night, I've was left with just 52,500. With registration closing the minute Level 7 starts, Ivey won't be able to reenter, meaning is quest for three in a row will begin on the short stack on Day 2.

Seidel Flushed Away in Massive Pot

Level 6 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Erik Seidel
Erik Seidel

Phil Ivey raised to 11,000 from middle position and Byron Kaverman called from the button. Erik Seidel then three-bet to 38,000 from the small blind, Ivey got out of the way, and Kaverman called to see a {9-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} flop.

Seidel led out for 42,000, Kaverman raised to 87,000, and Seidel thought for awhile before moving all in for 232,500 total. Kaverman called.

Kaverman: {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}
Seidel: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

Kaverman flopped top pair with a flush draw, but Seidel was out in front with pocket queens. The {K-Hearts} turn was of no consequence, but the {A-Diamonds} river was. Kaverman spiked his flush, and after the stacks were verified Seidel exited the tournament floor.

Mercier Eliminated by Holz

Level 5 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier

Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier raised from the button to 8,000 and Fedor Holz three-bet from the small blind to 23,000. Mercier moved all in for 84,000 and Holz made the call, creating an all-in showdown.

Mercier: {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}
Holz: {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}

The board ran out {K-Spades}{2-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{J-Spades}{4-Clubs} and Mercier was knocked out by the only player who thus far re entered. Holz, being in for half a million dollars, is now the tournament chip leader.

Kaverman Flushes O'Dwyer

Level 5 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Byron Kaverman
Byron Kaverman

With around 50,000 already in the pot and a board of {10-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}, Steve O'Dwyer bet 25,000 from the small blind and Byron Kaverman called from the big. O'Dwyer then checked the {7-Clubs} river and debated what to do when Kaverman bet 30,000.

Eventually he made the call, which constituted 40% of his remaining stack, only to muck when Kaverman rolled over the {a-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for a flush.

Fedor Holz the First to Go

Level 2 : 700/1,400, 200 ante
Fedor Holz
Fedor Holz

Brian Rast raised to 3,500 from middle position and Fedor Holz called from the button. Phil Ivey came along from the big blind and three players took a flop of {6-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}{8-Spades}. Ivey checked, Rast bet 7,500, and Holz called. Ivey got out of the way and it was heads-up action to the {9-Spades} turn.

Rast check-called a bet of 10,000 and then checked the {A-Hearts} river. Holz thought long and hard before moving all in and Rast snap-called. Holz showed the {a-Spades}{7-Spades} for a rivered pair of aces, but it was no good as Rast had turned a set with the {9-Clubs}{9-Hearts}.

Holz has the option to reenter the tournament, but only time will tell if he takes that route.

Phil Ivey Looking for 3rd Title in a Row and 4th Overall in the LK Boutique $250,000 Challenge

Phil Ivey
Phil Ivey

The biggest buy-in tournament of the Aussie Millions has arrived, as today marks the start of the LK Boutique $250,000 Challenge. The event will take place over the next two days and attract a small, elite field of competitors to the felt.

To some, this event is known as the "Phil Ivey Classic." That's because, since the start of this event in 2011, Ivey has won the tournament three times, including each of the last two years. In 2012, he topped a field of 16 entrants to win AU$2 million. In 2014 and 2015, he beat out fields of 46 and 25 entries to earn AU$4 million and AU$2.205 million, respectively. Tally those numbers up and Ivey's grand winnings in this event amount to AU$8.205 million.

In the first year of the event, 2011, a field of 20 entries generated a prize pool of AU$5 million. Erik Seidel defeated Sam Trickett to earn the AU$2.5 million top prize. In 2013, it was Trickett's turn to better his runner-up performance from two years prior when he topped a field of 18 entries to win the event for AU$2 million.

Through its first five years, the LK Boutique $250,000 Challenge has awarded nearly AU$31 million in prize money.

Although we can't put a finger on any confirmed players leading into the event, among those anticipated to play are Ivey, Jason Mercier, Mike McDonald, and Fedor Holz. Seidel has played this event many times in the past, and he's also at Crown Melbourne, so we can add him to that list. We could also see Connor Drinan, Sam Greenwood, and Steve O'Dwyer in the mix.

Fabian Quoss, who won the 2016 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge last night, is also a candidate to play, but he doesn't put his chances at playing high, which he talked about after his win.

Participating competitors will start off with 250,000 in tournament chips and six one-hour levels are scheduled for Day 1. Late registration and reentry will be available until the start of Day 2, which is the start of Level 7.

The event is scheduled to kick off at 12:15 p.m. local time, and you'll be able to find coverage right here on PokerNews.com.
