Joe Sandaev Claims the Top Spot in Day 1e of APO Main Event

Level 14 : 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Joe Sandaev
Joe Sandaev

Day 1e was the penultimate starting flight for the 2025 Australian Poker Open Main Event and it turned out to be the biggest yet — with 145 entrants taking their shot at APO glory here at Club Marconi at Doltone House Western Sydney. By the time the last card was dealt, Aussie tournament grinder Joe Sandaev emerged as the chip leader of the 18 survivors after accumulating 817,000 in chips — good for the second spot overall across all completed starting flights.

Sandaev is a regular in the Australian poker tournament scene with over $1,000,000 in live-tournament earnings. The vast majority of Sandaev's cashes have come from tournaments in Australia, with his breakout performance coming from a WPT High Roller Event in 2022 for a score of A$296,589.

More than three starting stacks separate Sandaev from his next-closest competitors Timon Prill (668,500) and Shayne Leroy (658,000). The fourth spot belongs to Marc Seymour, who placed ninth in the APO Main Event last year and will surely be looking to make another deep run with his big stack.

Day 1e Highlights

Last year's runner-up in the Main Event, Higor Seibel, entered Day 1e after having already entered multiple times in previous flights and was looking for redemption. Seibel got off to a hot start by catching a flush to bust Romain Morvan (who immediately reentered). From that point, Seibel was unable to build a particularly impressive stack, but he still skillfully navigated his way to a bag worth 243,000.

Poker crusher and high-roller regular Kahle Burns was in attendance, but faltered early after losing a race to Najeem Ajez early on. Not long after, Seymour called a shove from Burns with ten-nine and caught two pair against Burns' ace-king to eliminate him.

A roller-coaster of a day saw Albert Ng briefly claiming the chip lead after running aces into Ken Bolton's queens late in the evening. However, the swings of fortune favor no one in poker, and Ng found himself on the losing end of a massive pot after flopping a pair of kings against Sandaev's two pair. While Sandaev catapulted into the chip lead, Ng found himself on the rail shortly thereafter.

A brief bubble only saw two rounds of hand-for-hand play. On the second hand, both Morvan and Bolton found themselves all in and at risk at different tables. Both times the inferior hand won, but while Morvan cracked Seymour's kings with ace-queen to double up, Liam Jehu cracked Bolton's aces in brutal fashion to bring an end to Day 1e.

Day 1f, which is the sixth and final flight, will take place on Thursday, April 24 at noon. All players who failed to earn a Day-2 berth can reenter an unlimited amount of times in the final flight until late registration closes at the start of Level 10.

With just one flight to go, the action is sure to be spicy as players try one last time to secure a spot into Day 2. Be sure to keep it with PokerNews for ongoing coverage of the APO Main Event right up until the next champion is crowned.

Jehu Cracks Bolton's Aces to Burst the Day 2 Bubble

On the second hand of the Day-2 bubble, two players were all in and at risk at separate tables.

On the first table, Romain Morvan raised from middle position and Marc Seymour three-bet to 50,000. It was folded back around to Morvan, who shoved for a bit more. Seymour called and hands were revealed.

Romain Morvan: AQAll in
Marc Seymour: KK

Morvan was in trouble against Seymour's cowboys, and the 3J4 flop didn't look too promising. However, the 9 turn improved Morvan to a flush draw, and the 6 river caused the table to erupt as Morvan went runner-runner to double up and survive the Day-2 bubble.

At another table, Liam Jehu opened to 21,500 from the hijack and action folded to Ken Bolton in the small blind, who shoved his short stack into the middle. Jehu quickly called and another showdown was held.

Ken Bolton: AAAll in
Liam Jehu: AK

It was the best-possible case for Bolton, who was an overwhelming favorite to double up.

The J810 flop kept Bolton ahead, but gave Jehu clean outs to Broadway. In a cruel twist of fate for Bolton, the Q landed on the turn — filling Jehu's straight and leaving Bolton drawing to a chop.

It wasn't meant to be, however, as the 9 bricked out and Bolton was sent home with a bad-beat story for the ages.

Sandaev Takes the Lead

Level 14 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Joe Sandaev
Joe Sandaev

Joe Sandaev and Albert Ng were heads-up from the blinds with over 100,000 already in the middle on a board of 7QK3.

Sandaev bet 95,000 from the small blind and Ng tanked a bit in the big blind before sliding a stack that covered Sandaev into the middle. Sandaev quickly called all in for 287,000 to put himself at risk.

Joe Sandaev: K7All in
Albert Ng: K9

Sandaev held a commanding lead with kings-up and the 5 river changed nothing — shipping the tournament-leading pot to Sandaev while Ng was cut down to under 200,000.

Level 12 : Blinds 2,500/5,000, 5,000 ante

Albert Ng opened to 10,000 from the hijack and was three-bet to 35,000 by Ken Bolton on the button. It was folded back to Ng, who four-bet to 100,000. Bolton thought a while before announcing he was all in and Ng snap-called all in for 362,000 total.

Ng found himself on the right side of a cooler, and the 83675 runout came sweat-free to award Ng the huge pot.

Wong Goes Runner-Runner For a Double Elimination

Level 11 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Justin Wong was involved in a three-way all in from middle position against Najeem Ajez, who was in the small blind and one other player in the hijack.

Hijack: K9All in
Najeem Ajez: A10
Justin Wong: AK

Wong had both of his opponents dominated, but the 949 flop improved the player in the hijack to trip nines.

The 5 turn gave Wong outs to a flush, which came in on the Q turn — sending the table into an uproar as Wong collected the massive pot and scored a double knockout.

Marc Seymour
Marc Seymour

Marc Seymour opened to 6,000 from early position and it was folded to Kahle Burns, who shoved for approximately 30,000 on the button. The blinds folded and Seymour stuck in a call to put Burns at risk.

Kahle Burns: AKAll in
Marc Seymour: 109

Seymour was in a gambling mood and Burns had a real sweat against Seymour's two live cards.

The 745 flop kept Burns ahead, but a 9 turn paired Seymour's nine to give him a commanding lead.

The 10 completed the board — improving Seymour to two pair and ending Burns' run.

Ajez Drills the River to Double Through Burns

Level 8 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Najeem Ajez
Najeem Ajez

Amin Riyazati opened to 4,000 from middle position and was three-bet to 11,500 by Kahle Burns in the cutoff. It was then folded to Najeem Ajez in the small blind, who shoved for 58,000 total.

Riyazati tanked a bit before deciding to fold and Burns called to put Ajez at risk.

Najeem Ajez: 44All in
Kahle Burns: AK

"Yes!" Ajez shouted upon seeing he was in a coin flip situation with his pair of fours.

The 976 flop kept Ajez ahead, but gave Burns outs to a flush in addition to his overs.

The A turn paired Burns and left Ajez drawing to two outs, but a fateful 4 landed on the river, improving Ajez to a set for the double up.

"I folded nines!" Riyazati added as Ajez collected the pot.

Alan Casas opened to 4,000 and Kareem Kilany, who had recently lost a large pot, shoved for his last 36,500 from the small blind. The player in the big blind shoved for approximately 60,000 and Casas called after a bit of thought to put both players at risk.

Boucas Doubles Through Jehu

Level 7 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante

A large pot was already brewing between Constantinos Boucas and Liam Jehu on a board of 7JQ7.

Jehu checked from under the gun to Boucas, who shoved on the button for approximately 85,000 — which was well in excess of the pot.

"I'm always supposed to call, but you've given me such an opportunity to fold," Jehu said as he agonized over his decision.

Eventually, the clock was called and floor gave Jehu a countdown to declare his action or have his hand ruled dead.

Jehu stuck in a call with seconds to go and cards were revealed.

Constantinos Boucas: KKAll in
Liam Jehu: AQ

Jehu saw the bad news, and the 2 river kept Boucas' kings best to award him the massive double up.

"Merry Christmas," a dejected Jehu said.

Seibel Flushes Morvan Out

Level 4 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Higor Seibel
Higor Seibel

Higor Seibel opened to 1,600 from middle position and was called by Romain Morvan on the button.

Seibel checked to Morvan, who bet 1,600 on the J710 flop. Seibel paused before making it 6,000 to go. Undeterred, Morvan came back over the top with a raise to 21,600 — leaving himself just 4,000 behind. Seibel called.

The A fell on the turn and Seibel led out for 4,000 to put Morvan all in. Morvan obliged and hands were revealed.

Romain Morvan: AJAll in
Higor Seibel: 65

Morvan was in rough shape against Seibel's turned flush and would need to draw to an unlikely full house to double up. It wasn't meant to be, however, as the 7 river bricked out — sending the large pot Seibel's way and eliminating Morvan.

Seibel, who placed runner-up in the Main Event last year, now sits with approximately 70,000 in chips and will be looking to make another deep run.
