Joey Weissman Wins Inaugural BetMGM Poker Championship Main Event ($224,236)

Level 30 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Joey Weissman
Joey Weissman

Joey Weissman is the winner of the inaugural BetMGM Poker Championship $3,500 Main Event at ARIA Resort and Casino after defeating Paul Hoefer during heads-up play. Weissman entered heads-up play with a dominant chip lead and finished the job after doubling up his short-stacked opponent twice.

The four-day BetMGM Poker Championship Main Event drew 343 entrants to generate just under $1.1 million in prize money to surpass the guaranteed million. A decent chunk of the field, 68 players to be exact, qualified for the event by playing online at BetMGM Poker in either Michigan, New Jersey, or Pennsylvania.

Weissman, a World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet winner, adds the top prize of $224,236 to his previous $4.1 million in Hendon Mob-reported earnings in addition to the magnificent golden cup.

"This is the stuff we wake up for," Weissman told PokerNews after the victory. "Every day we wake up, most of the time we lose. As my good buddy Pads (Patrick Leonard) says, you wake up, you suffer, you go to sleep, you wake up, you suffer, you do it again. This is the day you wake up for, though. Some days you win.”

Final Table Action

Day 4 began with only six players and took nearly seven hours to get down to a winner. First out was veteran grinder Joe Kuether, who ran ace-queen into the pocket queens of Hoefer to fall in sixth place for $41,709.

Benji Felson, the last BetMGM Poker qualifier standing who satellited into the tournament for just $500, was next out when he got it in with top pair only to be out-kicked by Hoefer. The payday of $51,587 gave the New Jersey qualifier a greater than 100x return on his investment and biggest score to date.

Bracelet winner Michael Wang bowed out in fourth in heartbreaking fashion when he got it in with pocket queens against the ace-jack of diamonds of Weissman. Wang stayed ahead until the river card, which gave Weissman a coveted Royal Flush to crack the queens full of Wang, who kept a smile on his face as he took the gutwrenching beat.

Noel Rodriguez fell in third when he three-bet shoved with king-queen and couldn't improve against the ace-jack of Weissman, who entered heads-up play with a dominant chip lead over Hoefer before the German managed to double up twice to stay afloat.

In the final hand, Weissman held ace-four and put Hoefer in for the rest of his stack. Hoefer called with king-deuce and managed to out-flop Weissman before Weissman spiked an ace on the river to win the hand and the tournament. It was quite the spin-up for Hoefer, who began the day as the short stack with just 12 big blinds and managed to ladder to a second-place victory worth $159,152.

Weissman told PokerNews he navigated heads-up play cautiously despite having a big lead. In the same PokerGO Studio last year, Weissman overcame a dominant heads-up lead by Adam Hendrix to take down the U.S. Poker Open Event #5: $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em for $204,000.

“So, I know from firsthand (experience) that people come back in heads-up and win," he said. "So you’ve just got to stay focused, you can’t get too cocky. Anything can happen.”

That wraps up PokerNews' coverage of the inaugural BetMGM Poker Championship Main Event at ARIA Resort and Casino. Be sure to check out the live reporting portal for coverage of other events.

Paul Hoefer Eliminated in 2nd Place ($159,152)

Level 30 : 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Joey Weissman
Joey Weissman

Joey Weissman raised with {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} to put Paul Hoefer all-in for 1,800,000 and Hoefer called off with {k-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}.

Hoefer took the lead with a pair of deuces on the flop of {2-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and the {q-Clubs} on the turn was no help to Weissman. But Weissman's rail erupted in cheer when the {a-Clubs} peeled off on the river to give him a pair of aces and lock up the victory.

It was a great run for Hoefer, who entered the day as the short stack and managed to ladder to a second-place finish worth $159,152.

Joey Weissman opened to 300,000 on the button with {a-Spades}{j-Clubs} and Noel Rodriguez three-bet shoved for 2,000,000 in the big blind with {k-Spades}{q-Clubs}. Weissman called.

The flop came {a-Clubs}{j-Spades}{j-Diamonds} to give Weissman a full house, have Rodriguez all but drawing completely dead heading into the {3-Hearts} on the turn. The stream cameras cut away before the dealer put out the meaningless river card.

Rodriguez earns $104,272 for his third-place finish, his best live score to date.

Michael Wang Eliminated in 4th Place ($65,856)

Level 29 : 75,000/150,000, 150,000 ante
Michael Wang
Michael Wang

Michael Wang opened to 200,000 with {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} and Joey Weissman three-bet to 2,500,000 from the small blind holding {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}. Wang called with slightly less when the action folded back to him.

The flop came {7-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} to give Weissman additional outs with a gutshot and the {10-Diamonds} on the turn gave him a flush draw to go with it.

Weissman then binked the {q-Diamonds} on the river for a runner-runner Royal Flush to beat the queens full of Wang, sending Wang out in absolutely brutal fashion.

Wang took the beat like a champ and even let out a laugh of disbelief as the dealer peeled off river the card that doomed him.

"I feel stunned," Jamie Kerstetter reacted. "I can't imagine how he feels walking out. Ugh."

Benji Felson

Paul Hoefer opened to 250,000 in the cutoff holding {a-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} and Benji Felson defended from the big blind with {10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}.

The flop came {4-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{9-Hearts} to give both players top pair and. Felson checked and Hoefer bet 150,000. Felson check-raised all in for 850,000 and Hoefer called.

Felson was dominated and couldn't improve as the board ran out {6-Spades}{5-Clubs} to send the BetMGM Poker qualifier out in fifth place for his biggest career score of $51,587, not a bad return on his $500 investment.

Michael Wang

Michael Wang open-shoved a stack of 1,300,000 from the button with {2-Clubs}{2-Hearts} and Joey Weissman called from the big blind with {a-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}.

The flop came {q-Spades}{k-Spades}{2-Diamonds} to give Wang a big lead with a set of ducks, though Weissman had the gutshot to Broadway. The board finished out {3-Spades}{j-Hearts} and Wang secured the double to stay alive.

Paul Hoefer opened to 200,000 on the button holding {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}. Joey Weissman three-bet to 1,300,000 from the small blind and Hoefer four-bet jammed when the action got back around. Weissman called with 650,000 more.

Weissman received no help from the flop of {9-Spades}{k-Clubs}{9-Hearts} or {4-Diamonds} turn, but the {q-Hearts} peeled off on the river to keep the Day 3 chip leader alive.

Benji Felson opened in early position with {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} and Paul Hoefer flat-called on the button with {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}, while Noel Rodriguez came along from the big blind with {10-Clubs}{6-Clubs}.

The flop of {7-Spades}{8-Spades}{q-Clubs} checked through and Rodriguez led out for 275,000 on the {4-Spades} turn. Only Hoefer called. Rodriguez fired for 650,000 on the {7-Hearts} river with just ten-high. Hoefer went in the tank and eventually called to win the pot.

Felson was in great shape to double and did so as the board came out {j-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{a-Clubs} to improve him to a set while giving Rodriguez a meaningless pair of aces.

Joe Kuether Eliminated in 6th Place ($41,709)

Joe Kuether
Joe Kuether

Joe Kuether opened to 150,000 holding {a-Spades}{q-Hearts} and the action folded to Paul Hoefer in the big blind, who three-bet jammed a stack of 1,200,000 with {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}. Kuether called with a slightly bigger stack.

Hoefer's queens stayed ahead as the board ran out {8-Spades}{3-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{7-Spades} to leave Kuether with crumbs.

The next hand, Noel Rodriguez opened to 200,000 with {a-Spades}{9-Hearts} and called when Kuether three-bet jammed from the big blind with {q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}.

The flop of {5-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} gave Rodriguez the lead with a pair of aces but Kuether had hope with a gutshot to Broadway. Unfortunately for him, the board bricked out {2-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and he was eliminated in sixth place.
