Keven Stammen Wins Season XII WPT World Championship for $1,350,000

Level 31 : 100,000/200,000, 25 ante
Keven Stammen - Winner of the Season XII WPT World Championship!
Keven Stammen - Winner of the Season XII WPT World Championship!

Keven Stammen just added his name to the WPT Champions Cup, putting on a dominant final table performance to win $1.35 million, along with the pride associated with winning one of poker's most prestigious events.

Since the poker boom began in 2003, the World Poker Tour has been at the forefront of the tournament circuit scene, spanning the globe while hosting several of the premier events in the poker world. Another successful run is now in the books, as Season XII concluded with the WPT World Championship at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

The event boasted a $5 million guarantee with a $15,400 buy-in - reduced from the WPT's previous standard of $25,500 - and the poker world's elite came out to take their shot at the $1.35 million first prize payout. When the two starting flights were wrapped up a total of 328 entries and reentries were recorded, and the roster of players who came to play represented a veritable who's who of the game's greats. In the end though, it was Keven Stammen who took down top honors, weaving his way through a stacked field filled with superstars at every table to claim every last chip in play. And he did so in dramatic fashion, winning a race with an ace on the river to defeat Byron Kaverman, ending a thrilling heads-up match that saw Stammen begin with a big lead before the pair traded jabs and body blows.

Kaverman's runner-up finish added another feather to his WPT résumé, as he set the record for most cashes in a single season with seven - a record he snatched from Stammen (Season XII), along with a collection of the circuit's most consistent performers on the felt. The Borgata also seems to agree with Kaverman, as he made his second final table appearance in as many seasonal opens here at the East Coast's premier poker establishment. Kaverman also made a deep run at the Borgata Winter Poker Open's WPT Main Event championship in January.

The field combined on Day 2 with 199 runners remaining, and after a full day of action on the felt just 68 survivors had chips in the bag. The chip leader at the end of Day 2 was Eric Afriat, and he turned the trick again on Day 3 by topping the counts once more.

Stammen, meanwhile, was riding one of the shortest stacks in the room with just 56,000 when Day 3 began, scoring a tournament-saving (and as it turns out, life-changing) double through George Kelly when his kings in the hole dodged the deck's aces. It was an ace from space that saved Stammen later in the day, as he doubled through Loni Harwood when a bullet hit the board on the river to crack her pocket jacks.

From there, Stammen went on a tear to the final table, building a big stack while busting many of his fellow pros along the way. Those who fell at Stammen's hand during the decisive Day 4 included many of the toughest players left in the field, as he finished Harwood off in 29th place, made Jeff Madsen go away in 19th place, cashed Chris O'Rourke out in 14th place, and booted Bobby Oboodi out the door in 12th place. A huge bluff catch against Tony Dunst also swelled Stammen's stack late during Day 4 action, and while Dunst rebounded quite nicely to reach the final table, the hand provided Stammen with the confidence to rely on his reading ability.

The televised final table was truly a star-studded affair, with the WPT's very own Tony Dunst (3rd) representing the tour and proving that the strategy tips provided in his The Raw Deal segment - in which he pointedly critiques the play of his fellow pros - are backed by true poker bona fides. Ryan D'Angelo (4th) continued his amazing run through the WPT this year, earning his fifth cash of Season XXII and earning the second-largest score of his career. The self-proclaimed "Psycho Ninja" was here, as Curt Kohlberg (5th) brought his inimitable fashion sense and outspoken attitude to the final table stage. Abraham Korotki (6th) continued to dominate the local poker scene, as the 2009 Borgata Poker Open Ladies Event Champion made his second final table of this seasonal series after winning the $2,700 Main Event just over a week ago.

Among stars who fell short during the first two starting flights were Robert "Uncle Krunk" Panitch, Lily Kiletto, Noah Schwartz, and Chris Moorman, Aaron Massey, Jonathan Jaffe, Kara Scott, Anthony Merulla, Amanda Musumeci, Dan Smith, Eugene Katchalov, Scott Clements, Ryan Riess, Mike Matusow, and James Calderaro.

Stammen's incredible run from the fourth shortest stack in the room when Day 3 began to World Champion caps off another successful season for the the WPT, as well as providing a fitting conclusion to the Borgata Spring Poker Open. Stammen pushed his career live earnings to more than $3.5 million, and he has now won two legs of poker's elusive Triple Crown, capturing WSOP and WPT titles to put himself squarely among poker's elite.

Level 31 : 100,000/200,000, 25 ante
Byron Kaverman - 2nd Place
Byron Kaverman - 2nd Place

Hand #151 After Keven Stammen completed the small blind, Byron Kaverman moved all in for 3.155 million with {4-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and is quickly called by Keven Stammen who has {A-Clubs}{8-Spades}.

The flop came {Q-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{6-Spades} keeping Kaverman in the lead.

The turn was the {3-Hearts} and Kaverman was one card away from doubling up.

The river was the Barry Greenstein.... an Ace on the river... the {A-Hearts}. Keven Stammen is all smiles as he gets mobbed by his friends as they congratulated him on winning the World Poker Tour Championship Event. Byron Kaverman will have to settle for an excellent consolation prize of $727,860 and an outstanding 2nd place finish.

Hands #131-132: Kaverman Tanks and Folds, Leaving Himself Short

Level 30 : 75,000/150,000, 25,000 ante
Byron Kaverman
Byron Kaverman

Hand #131 Keven Stammen opened to 400,000. Byron Kaverman called. The flop was {5-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{4-Spades}. Kaverman checked and Stammen bet 550,000. Kaverman folded and Stammen won the pot.

Hand #132 Byron Kaverman raised to 300,000 and Keven Stammen looked down at his stack of chips and made the call. The dealer put out a flop of {Q-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}. Stammen bet 525,000 and Kaverman raised it to 1.15 million. Stammen made the call.

The turn was the {A-Hearts}. Stammen studied Kaverman and asked how much he had behind. Kaverman moved the chips closer to the center so Stammen could get a visual and then Stammen moved all in for an effective 2.6 million in chips.

Kaverman sat there quietly, playing with chips in his right hand, a puzzled look on his face. He looked down at the table and shifted uncomfortably in his chair. Stammen looked directly at Kaverman the entire time. A small smile came over Kaverman's face and then he grimaced slightly. He ran his fingers through his short, brown hair, struggling with his decision. He tapped the table with chips in hand, set them back down, and casually waved his hand in the air.

It approached five minutes since Stammen had moved all in and Kaverman had still not determined what course of action he was going to take. A big sigh. Stammen had still not altered anything about his demeanor. He sat there, looking across the table at Kaverman, his hands not playing with any chips, just resting calmly on the felt. Another flick of Kaverman's hands into the air. It looked as if he wanted to call but was having problems bringing himself to do it. The rest of the room was quiet except for the sound of Kaverman slowly playing with the chips in his hand.

Kaverman shook his head. Looked back at his cards. Another big sigh. Talking to himself. Tapping the table some more and yet another peek back at his cards. Maybe willing them to change and when they magically wouldn't he finally decided to lay his hand down. It was a nearly ten minute tank but he lives to play at least one more hand.

Hand #130: Byron Kaverman had the button, and raised to 325,000. Keven Stammen called, the flop fell {6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{j-Spades}, and Stammen checked. Kaverman continued for 375,000, Stammen called, and the turn brought the {2-Hearts}. Stammen opted to lead out, firing 525,000, and Kaverman tanked for two minutes.

He eventually raised to 1.25 million, and Stammen sat quietly, riffling a small stack of chips with his right hand.

"Call," he said, committing the necessary chips.

The river was a repeat four - the {4-Clubs} - and Stammen quickly checked. Kaverman checked behind, then mucked when Stammen showed {a-Clubs}{4-Hearts} for trip fours.

The turn was the {10-Clubs}, Kaverman led out again - this time for 850,000 - and Stammen once again called.

The {3-Hearts} on the river paired the board, and Kaverman tanked for nearly three minutes before firing a final bullet worth 925,000. Stammen instantly called, then mucked just as quickly when Kaverman opened up {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for tens and threes.

Tony Dunst - 3rd Place

Hand #109: Play was now three handed and Tony Dunst folded first to act. Byron Kaverman raised to 325,000 from the small blind and Keven Stammen called. The flop came {K-Spades}{5-Clubs}{3-Clubs} and Kaverman bet 325,000. Stammen called.

The turn was the {4-Hearts} and Kaverman checked. Stammen bet 675,00 and Kaverman folded.

Hand #110: Byron Kaverman opened to 250,000 and picked up the blinds and antes when Stammen and Dunst folded.

Hand #111: Tony Dunst moved all in from the small blind and Byron Kaverman requested a count. The total was 1.310 million. Kaverman tanked for about a minute and elected to fold.

Hand #112: Tony Dunst moved all in again, this time from the button for 1.470 million. Kaverman folded and Stammen decided to look him up with {K-Hearts}{6-Hearts} while Dunst had {A-Clubs}{2-Hearts}.

The flop came {K-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} to move Stammen into the lead.

The turn was the {K-Diamonds} and Stammen could only lose the hand if a four came on the river.

The river was the {7-Clubs} and Tony Dunst, the likeable WPT Raw Deal commentator, was eliminated in 3rd place for an impressive $452,729.

Stammen will enter heads up play with an approximately 2:1 chip advantage over Byron Kaverman.

Ryan D'Angelo - 4th Place
Ryan D'Angelo - 4th Place

Hand #108: Ryan D’Angelo moved all in for 870,000 in the small blind, and Byron Kaverman requested a count before tank-calling.

D’Angelo: {9-Spades}{5-Clubs}
Kaverman: {q-Spades}{2-Clubs}

The dealer rapped the felt before delivering a flop of {6-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{a-Spades}, giving D'Angelo a gut-shot straight draw to go with his outs to make a pair.

The {10-Hearts} on the turn was inconsequential, and the man named "g0lfa" was left with 10 outs to survive and remain in contention for the Season XII WPT World Championship.

Unfortunately for him it was not to be as the {k-Clubs} bricked off on the river, and D'Angelo was eliminated in fourth place.

Hand #107: Tony Dunst shoved all in from the small blind, putting his last 715,000 at risk, and Ryan D'Angelo made the call out of the big blind.

D'Angelo: {q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Dunst: {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Dunst shoved with an ace and a face, while D'Angelo brought a queen-high hand to bear.

Flop: {3-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{a-Clubs}

An ace-high flop gave Dunst a hammerlock on the hand, and in a rare occasion at this final table, the turn card failed to deliver a sweat, coming {9-Clubs} to leave D'Angelo drawing dead. The {7-Clubs} completed the board on the river, and with that Dunst doubled to leave D'Angelo as the table's short stack.

Hand #102: Curt Kohlberg moved all in for 215,000 from the cutoff, Byron Kaverman raised to 600,000 on the button, and the players in the blinds folded.

Kohlberg: {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Kaverman: {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}

Kohlberg took the lead in the race on a flop of {2-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}, making a pair of jacks. He remained ahead after the turn produced the {8-Clubs}, and some members of the crowd returned to their seats.

They all popped to their feet - particularly Kaverman's rail - when the {6-Spades} spiked on the river, giving him a set of sixes and eliminating Kohlberg in fifth place.

Hand #98: Kaverman opened to 200,000 from the cutoff and took down the blinds and antes

Hand #99: Stammen opened to 250,000 from the cutoff and the blinds and antes were pushed his way.

Hand 100: The action folded around to Curt Kohlberg in the small blind and he open-shoved for 1.895 million. Kaverman didn't take his time in acting after a seven minute tank earlier, and he quickly called Kohlberg down.

Kohlberg: {a-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}
Kaverman: {a-Hearts}{j-Spades}

Kohlberg made his stand with an ace-high hand, but he was dominated by Kaverman's jack-kicker.

Flop: {3-Spades}{9-Clubs}{4-Spades}
