Volpe Ravages Day 1a

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Paul Volpe - Chip Leader
Paul Volpe - Chip Leader

The first of two flights for the 2014 Borgata Spring Poker Open Championship is in the books, and leading the 57 survivors is Paul Volpe. Volpe, the 14th-ranked player in the world, bagged 206,600 chips, winning a massive pot off of Matt Affleck in Level 6. Volpe turned the nuts against Affleck's flopped set of eights, and the board did not pair on the river.

Volpe has only registered three cashes thus far in 2014, but with a win at the L.A. Poker Classic and a runner-up finish in the Borgata $250,000 Guarantee, he has over $150,000 in earnings over the last three-and-a-half months.

Joining Volpe atop the leader board after Day 1a are Jose Montes (175,600), Jeff Madsen (135,500), Dan Heimiller (120,500), and Greg Ostrander (106,100). Madsen snagged a pot off of Heimiller during the final level of the evening when he made sixes full on the river against Heimiller's turned flush.

A plethora of notables will also return for action on Day 2, including Christian Harder, Joe Kuether, Matt Salsberg, Ravi Raghavan, and 2014 Global Poker Index Player of the Year leader Keven Stammen. Stammen endured a roller coaster day that saw him dip as low as 1,875 chips with the blinds at 300/600/75, but he doubled several times and ended up bagging 31,100 chips.

The day was not kind to all, as Alex Queen, Mike Gagliano, Kyle Bowker, John Tavss, Tony Sinishtaj, and Christopher Tryba all hit the rail. Tryba was eliminated in Level 2, when he flopped a straight only for Emad Alabsi to turn a higher straight.

There were a total of 115 entries on Day 1a, and Day 1b will need to attract at least 285 to reach the $1 million guarantee. PokerNews will be back bright and early at 11 a.m. to bring you all of the action from the first pitch to the bag-and-tag.

Mad Dog Downs Dan

Jeff Madsen
Jeff Madsen

Jeff Madsen just took down a huge pot from Dan Heimiller, after making a full house to best the latter's heart flush.

The final board showed {2-Hearts}{q-Spades}{6-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{6-Clubs} when we caught the action, and Heimiller was contemplating a raise to 26,000 from Madsen. Heimeller had bet about 11,500 on the river, and although he appeared to know the score when the young pro popped it, he made the crying call with his {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}.

Madsen rolled over his {k-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} for the winner to push his stack into the upper echelon with just three hands left to play tonight - as Tournament Director Tab Duchateau just announced that bag-and-tag will take place shortly.

Stammen Out of the Weeds

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Keven Stammen
Keven Stammen

About an hour ago Keven Stammen lost a pot to find himself crippled, and although he doubled his 1,875 on the very next hand courtesy of Christian Harder, we did not expect a full-fledged comeback from under five big blinds to manifest itself.

Stammen is a pro though, and he persevered through the loss of most of his chips, grinding his way back to the realm of respectability.

Recently, we saw Stammen continue to build momentum, taking a small pot from Matt Salsberg.

The action began when Salsberg opened for 1,300 from the middle position, with Christian Harder flatting from the button and Stammen doing the same in defense of his small blind. When the dealer fanned the {a-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} flop across the felt, Stammen checked and Salsberg continued with a 2,000 wager.

Harder got out of the way and Stammen smooth called to see the {2-Hearts} rain down on the turn. Rather than checking for a second time, Stammen seized the initiative - and the pot - with a 4,300 bet. He now holds close to the average, after falling to just under four big blinds earlier in the evening.

Borrero Bests Buzgon

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Miguel Borrero
Miguel Borrero

Miguel Borrero just doubled through longtime pro and local boy Daniel Buzgon, leaving the latter with just a little more than 10 big blinds.

The final board read {q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{k-Hearts} when we passed by, and Buzgon's {A-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} was laid out in front of his soon to be depleted stack. Borrero held the {Q-Spades}{4-Spades} and according to his rundown of the action, he checked the flop after making two pair, before shoving all in for about 15,000 after Buzgon bet.

With top pair and top kicker, Buzgon wasn't going anywhere, but he found himself up against a better hand and no help arrived on the turn or river, sending the double over to Borrero two seats to his right.

All the World's a Stage

Level 7 : 250/500, 75 ante
Melanie Weisner
Melanie Weisner

A stroll through the tournament often provides fleeting glimpses into the lives of touring pros, as longtime acquaintances from around the circuit converse and catch up.

Passing by Melanie Weisner's table recently, we overheard the young pro engage in a bit of banter with actor and poker enthusiast James Woods. Weisner mentioned her background in classical opera singing, with the accomplished thespian listening on and offering the occasional commentary.

Although neither player risked a chip during this brief pause in the action, moments like this demonstrate successful poker players are often possess many talents away from the felt. With the best and brightest from the world of law, literature, music and the stage increasingly diverting their skills to the gritty game of poker, its always refreshing to learn that life goes on once the chips are bagged and tagged.

King Kuether

Joe Kuether
Joe Kuether

After Paul Volpe opened to 1,200 from middle position, fellow pro Joe Kuether came along from the button, as did the big blind.

The dealer fanned the {9-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} and Volpe c-bet for 2,700 after the big blind tapped the table. Kuether flatted the bet and the big blind got out of the way, bringing the {2-Diamonds} to the table on the turn.

Volpe and Kuether checked fourth street down, as they did on the {q-Spades} river.

"Jack-high," announced Volpe, before mucking when Kuether produced {k-Clubs}{j-Spades} for top pair on the flop. Despite the small dent to his stack, Volpe still holds more chips than nearly everybody in the room.

Blank Best Stammen, Pro Pushes Back

Level 7 : 250/500, 75 ante
Keven Stammen
Keven Stammen

Keven Stammen just shipped a double up across the table to Ryan Blank, after the latter's {2-Spades}{2-Diamonds} held up over the pro's {A-Hearts}{q-Hearts} in a preflop coin flip.

The final board ran out {8-Clubs}{9-Spades}{9-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{10-Hearts} and the ducks survived a five-card hunt against two overcards.

On the very next deal, Stammen responded to Christian Harder's open to 3,000 by calling off his last 1,875 with {J-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}. Harder smiled while tabling a dominated {J-Clubs}{9-Clubs} and after asking the dealer for a double up, Stammen's wish was granted with a {10-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} run out.

Stammen, the current leader of the Global Poker Index Player of the Year race, restored his stack to about 5,000 - good for a still shortened stack of about 10 big blinds.

Volpe Hits Double Gutter to Eliminate Affleck

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Paul Volpe
Paul Volpe

We get to the table with the board showing {9-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{6-Spades} and according to Ralph Massey the action went Paul Volpe check, Matt Affleck bet 1,500, Volpe check-raised to 4,000, and then Affleck made it 11,500.

Volpe clicked it back one time and made it 19,000 to go and after thinking it over for 30 seconds Affleck called.

The turn was the {J-Diamonds} and Volpe bet 12,400. Affleck tanked and then announced that he was all in. He was snap-called by Volpe who had hit the nuts on the turn with his {Q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. Affleck wasn't drawing dead, however, as he had a set with his {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}. The river was the {A-Clubs} and Volpe scoops a huge pot while Affleck will have to try his luck again tomorrow.

Melanie Weisner opened the pot to 800 from the hijack and found four callers including Junayed Khan from the cutoff, Kal Alwan from the button, and James Woods from the big blind.

The turn was the {10-Diamonds} and Woods checked. Khan bet 4,500 this time and again was called by both Alwan and Woods.

The river was the {J-Clubs} and Woods checked once more. Khan fired a third bullet, this time for 8,100. Alwan called and Woods shook his head and tossed a stack of chips on his cards. Woods stood up, his hands on his hips, staring at the board and decides to fold.
