Alan Wentz Heads Into Day 2 With Chip Lead

Level 8 : 300/600, 50 ante
Alan Wentz, Chip Leader
Alan Wentz, Chip Leader

The second flight for the 2014 Borgata Spring Poker Open Championship concluded with 142 players joining the 57 from the first flight to return tomorrow at noon for Day 2. The chip leader at the end of the day, and for the tournament thus far, is Alan Wentz who won a massive pot against past World Poker Tour Borgata Poker Open winner Anthony Zinno to surge into the chip lead. Wentz finished the day with an impressive 239,500 in chips which is 32,900 more than what Day 1a chip leader Paul Volpe finished with.

Wentz is a virtual unknown with only one listed live cash for $32,724. That was only a month ago so he could be on to the start of something great with a deep run here.

There were plenty of players taking part in the action today as 299 entrants took part. Joining Wentz at the top of the leader board are Andy Spears (205,400), Kevin Grabel (168,000), Matt Giannetti (165,600), Daniel Buzgon (138,400), Mike Leah (103,800), and Brett Richey (101,800). Buzgon won a big pot off of Tony Dunst to eliminate the WPT commentator and build himself a top stack.

Other notables that will return for Day 2 include Brian Lemke, Andy Frankenberger, Darren Elias, David Tuthill, Corrie Wunstel, Amnon Filippi, Adam Friedman, Matt Affleck, and a short stacked Melanie Weisner who opted to forfeit her Day 1a stack and try again. She would get off to a hot start but would falter at the end of the day to end with just 20,000 in chips.

For all those that made it through, there were as many that would go home disappointed including the likes of Men Nguyen, James Woods, Jamie Kerstetter, Cherish Andrews, and Allen Kessler.

The total prize pool for the tournament just met the $1 million guarantee with it reaching $1,003,950. First place will take home $256,508. Tomorrow players will play another 8 levels and play will start at noon local time. PokerNews will be back here from the start to bring you all the exciting flops, turns, and rivers.

Alan Wentz Wins Massive Pot to Bust Anthony Zinno

Level 7 : 250/500, 75 ante
Alan Wentz
Alan Wentz

All the money went in with the board showing {10-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{6-Spades} and Anthony Zinno was in great shape to double up with his {7-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. He would have to fade a club though as Alan Wentz had {A-Clubs}{A-}.

It wasn't Zinno's day as the river was the {6-Clubs} to give Wentz the pot and send Zinno to the rail empty handed. Wentz is up to 225,000 after taking that pot down.

Dunst Receives a Buzgon Cut

Level 7 : 250/500, 75 ante
Daniel Buzgon
Daniel Buzgon

With the board showing {10-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{5-Hearts}, Dan Buzgon check-called an 8,100 bet from Tony Dunst. The river paired the board with the {5-Clubs}.

Buzgon checked again. Dunst sat there in thought, and announced all in. He was met instantly with Buzgon putting his chips in the middle while turning over {10-}{10-} for a flopped set that turned into a full house on the river.

Dunst, ever the gentleman, mucked his hand, stood up and said "Good luck guys" as he started to head out of the room.

Lemke Wins Cooler

Level 7 : 250/500, 75 ante
Brian Lemke
Brian Lemke

Brian Lemke had re-raised his opponent who after thinking things through announced he was all in. Lemke snap-called, turning over {A-}{A-}. "I almost folded," said his opponent as he turned over {K-}{K-}.

The flop came {A-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{2-Hearts} giving Lemke a set of Aces. The turn actually helped his opponent as it was the {J-Spades} meaning any ten would make a straight. The river was the {3-Clubs}, however, and Lemke had his foe covered slightly to send him to the rail.

Toscano Takes Out Kerstetter

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Jamie Kerstetter
Jamie Kerstetter

Frank Toscano was assembling chips to fire out a bet on a flop of {q-Spades}{9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}, and he was literally beaten into the pot by his opponent, partypoker Team Pro Jamie Kerstetter. She tossed out 2,500 before he could even drop it in front of him, and he awkwardly returned the chips to his stack. He then brought them forward once more, dropping them down.

The turn was the {5-Diamonds}, Toscano fired another 2,500, and Kerstetter moved all in for 10,075. Toscano fumbled a few more chips, then called.

Toscano: {j-Spades}{10-Spades}
Kerstetter: {a-Spades}{6-Spades}

Both players held flush draws, but Kerstetter had the ace and a meaningless pair of sixes and Toscano also had a straight draw. The river didn't give Toscano a straight, but the {j-Diamonds} gave him a pair of jacks to win the hand and eliminate Kerstetter.

Tony Dunst Wants to Punch Someone

Level 6 : 200/400, 50 ante
Tony Dunst
Tony Dunst

Tony Dunst opened from the hijack to 800 and received three callers, including Sean Wallace out of the big blind. The flop came {8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{2-Spades} and it was checked to Dunst who made it 2,000 to go. The players sitting on the button and small blind called while Wallace folded.

The turn was the {2-Diamonds} and the player in the small blind checked, as did Dunst. The player on the button was having none of it and bet 4,300 leading to two folds.

Besides being a part of the World Poker Tour broadcast team, Dunst is also an accomplished poker player with over one million dollars in reported live tournament winnings as well as being very successful online prior to Black Friday. Dunst tweeted earlier a reminder about today being the anniversary of Black Friday:

Tony DunstJust realized it's the three year anniversary of Black Friday and immediately felt like punching someone/anyone.

Ground Hog's Day

Day 1a chip leader Paul Volpe
Day 1a chip leader Paul Volpe

Good morning, and welcome back to the wonderful Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa for Day 1b of the 2014 Borgata Spring Poker Open Championship Event!

Day 1a attracted a total of 115 entries - 57 of which bagged and tagged - and the chip leader when the dust settled was Paul Volpe. Volpe bagged 206,600, and was the only player in the room to crack the 200,000-chip threshold.

Other players who finished the first flight with six-figure stacks include Jeff Madsen, Dan Heimiller, and Greg Ostrander.

Some players, like Melanie Weisner, bagged very small stacks and have a tough decision to make; reenter and forfeit their stack, or come back on Day 2 and try to run it up. Others who busted during Day 1a have no choice but to reenter if they want to compete for the 2014 BSO Championship.

Like yesterday, we will be playing eight 75-minute levels with a 75-minute dinner break after Level 6. With 115 entries on Day 1a, the magic number today is 285 to reach the $1 million guarantee.

Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews for live coverage of this and every main event at the 2014 Borgata Spring Poker Open.
