The World Poker Tour Borgata Winter Poker Open Championship is finally here, and for the first time ever PokerNews will be providing live coverage of the tournament straight from the luxurious Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City.

The flagship event on the Borgata Winter Poker Open schedule will run from Jan. 26-31. The tournament features a buy-in of $3,500 with two starting flights and a $3 million guaranteed prize pool. Re-entry will be available on Day 1a for those who are eliminated before Level 6, and players eliminated on Day 1a may also re-enter on Day 1b.

For those on the fence about putting up $3,500 to play, there's still plenty of time to qualify through a satellite tournament. Borgata is hosting one last live qualifier tonight, offering players a chance to win a seat to the WPT event for a fraction of the buy-in.

Here's a look at the qualifier schedule this weekend:

Looking back at the history of the event, the first WPT stop at the Borgata took place in Season 2 from Sept. 20-22, 2003, a few short months after Chris Moneymaker ignited the poker boom by winning the World Series of Poker Main Event. The 2003 WPT Borgata Poker Open had a $5,000 price tag and attracted 235 players, creating a prize pool of $1,175,000. The final table included former world champion Carlos Mortensen and fellow poker pro David Oppenheim, but in the end it was Noli Francisco who emerged victorious, making Borgata history in the process.

Since then, the WPT has visited the Borgata at least once every year. After the Borgata Poker Open buy-in was changed to $10,000 in Season 3, the WPT visited the venue twice in Season 4 with the addition of the Borgata Winter Poker Open. Michael Mizrachi won his second WPT title in that event, and it was subsequently won by big names like John Hennigan (Season 5) and Gavin Griffin (Season 6) before being removed from the schedule for five years.

A major change to the WPT Borgata Poker Open was made in Season 8. The buy-in was dropped to $3,500 and the tournament was changed to a multi-entry format. The number of entrants skyrocketed to 1,018 — the largest in WPT history — and well-known pro Olivier Busquet went on to claim victory and the top prize of $925,000.

The event grew even more in Season 9. Dwyte Pilgrim bested a field of 1,042 in dramatic fashion, winning his first major tournament in his own backyard. The largest WPT Borgata event ever took place the following year when 1,313 entrants took to the felt. Bobby Oboodi was the last man standing, collecting $922,441 and the honor of winning the biggest WPT Borgata event ever — a record that still stands today.

The WPT Borgata Winter Poker Open returned last year after the five-year hiatus, and Andy Hwang took down the championship event for $730,053. Hwang outlasted a field of 1,042 including a final table that featured eventual WPT Player of the Year Matt Salsberg (sixth place).

Cotton Snuffer Just Won Half the Pot... and You Know What Heisenberg Has to Say About Half Measures
Cotton Snuffer Just Won Half the Pot... and You Know What Heisenberg Has to Say About Half Measures

Cotton Snuffer took down a tournament already at the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open - winning Event 5 for a $63,882 score to start the series off with a bang - but we have a feeling his presence would have been felt regardless of the big win.

Snuffer bears an uncanny resemblance to Walter White of the iconic television series Breaking Bad, and when he tops it off with a black porkpie hat the effect is chilling to say the least.

We watched Snuffer play a three-handed pot to the river recently, and when it was all said and done not much had changed.

The final board read {j-Spades}{6-Clubs}{3-Spades}{5-Spades}{j-Hearts} by the river and all three players checked it down with the board pairing. Snuffer rolled over his {2-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} in a manner that suggested he thought the pot was his, and his confidence was understandable as he held a well-concealed straight. Unfortunately for the man they call Heisenberg here at the Borgata, his opponent held the same hand with {2-Spades}{4-Clubs} and the pot was chopped up.

A small profit for Snuffer to be sure, but if he's anything like his alter ego only full measures will leave him satisfied.

Gagliano Takes from Hwang

Level 6 : 150/300, 50 ante

Defending champ Andy Hwang fired 1,850 with the board reading {4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{j-Spades}. Michael Gagliano, who had checked, made the call. The players watched a {10-Hearts} fall on the river, pairing the board and completing a three-flush. Gagliano checked, Hwang bet 3,500, and Gagliano leaned back and thought.

"This is a weird hand," he said. "I call."

Hwang turned over {k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} for top pair, but Gagliano held {q-Spades}{10-Clubs} for trip tens.

Dimas Martinez is a Made Man

Level 6 : 150/300, 50 ante
Dimas Martinez is Mean Mugging and Mobbing on His Table
Dimas Martinez is Mean Mugging and Mobbing on His Table

Here at the Borgata Winter Poker Open, talk of the infamous "Twenty-Seven" has floated through the room ever since the cancellation of Event 1 left 27 players in poker limbo.

Dimas Martinez probably hears the whispers while he plays, and as one of those 27 players who still had chips to work with when the bad news came down (he had 2 million entering the Day 3 that never was), Martinez still has strong feelings on the subject.

"I want my money!" he told us with a stone-faced glare, before breaking the tension with a laugh. "I got seven kids man..."

Martinez was obviously having a bit of fun after dragging another pot his way today - he currently sits with more than double the average - and although the Event 1 situation is out of his hands, today's tournament provides a chance at redemption.

The tattooed man with gold chains and a "Spanish MAFIA" ballcap may not look like your run-of-the-mill poker sharp, but he's having his way with a table of skilled players here today. A bit of luck always helps of course - Martinez spiked a set of deuces with {2-}{2-} to down {A-}{a-} early in the day - but a recent hand shows he knows how to use the chips lady luck saw fit to throw his way.

Martinez opened for a standard raise from under the gun, and a lone caller came along to take the {3-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{j-Hearts} flop. Both players then tapped the table and the turn card came {10-Spades}. Martinez check-called a bet of 700 on fourth street, bringing the {k-Hearts} on board as the river card.

Having built a decent pot already, Martinez whacked his opponent with a river bet of 925, adding another chunk of chips to his growing castle.

If Martinez can keep it up throughout the rest of Day 1a, he might just get his money after all.

Salsberg, Crane Spar

Level 6 : 150/300, 50 ante
Matthew Salsberg saw a great board for his hand.
Matthew Salsberg saw a great board for his hand.

Matt Salsberg, who was under the gun, check-called a 1,500 bet from Russell Crane after a {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{a-Spades} flop. The {9-Diamonds} turn completed a three-flush, prompting Salsberg to lead out for 1,850. Crane bumped it to 5,200, and Salsberg made the call after about a minute of thought. The river came {a-Clubs}, and Salsberg bet out 5,000. Crane quickly tossed his hand to the dealer.

Salsberg showed {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} for the nut flush.

Selbst Staying Alive

Vanessa Selbst on Day 1a of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event
Vanessa Selbst on Day 1a of the 2014 Borgata Winter Poker Open WPT Main Event

The final board read {3-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{j-Spades} and the pot contained right around 4,000 when Vanessa Selbst's opponent tapped the table.

Selbst paused a beat before moving all in for her last 6,700, and with a frustrated smile on his face the other man tossed his cards toward the dealer.

Even with the win Selbst still sits with about one-third of the starting stack, and with just one full level and some change left in the re-entry period of the first starting flight, she is likely to make moves in an effort to build above 30,000 - or bust out trying.
