Day 1a of Event #1: $600 Deepstack Kick-Off at the Borgata Winter Poker Open has come to an end after 15 exciting levels of play and it is Emanuele "Manny" Gugliuzza leading the 65 survivors out of 405 entries. With the $2,000,000 guaranteed prize pool, it is expected that the fun has only just started as there are four more starting days coming up over the next two days at the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa.

Gugliuzza shot to the top of the leaderboard early in the day when he sent two players out with his pocket nines that turned into a set. He continued his dominance throughout the rest of the day, finishing on top of the field with a stack of 419,000. Finishing right behind him in this flight is Michael Cohen with his 414,000 stack.

Other notable stacks to end the day include Reggie Jones (326,000), Charlie Marchese (269,000), Mike Volpe (263,000), and Borgata regular Michael Marder (246,000). A complete list of remaining players and their chip counts will be posted before the start of Day 2. This will also include the seat draw once this has been received from the organization.

That wraps it up for the first of five starting flights with Day 1b kicking off at 11 p.m. local time on Wednesday, January 15. Tune in tomorrow for the PokerNews updates on the next two starting flights as they unfold.

Cappuccio Gets Seat Online

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Joe Cappuccio
Joe Cappuccio

Joe Cappuccio is a local pro and knows how to get it done on the cheap. He earned his way into this $600 tournament for much less, playing online at BorgataPoker.com. He won his seat last Sunday and joins 35 other players who entered this event via online satellites.

Cappuccio just missed out on taking home the 2018 Borgata Fall Poker Open Kick-Off trophy. He got heads-up with newcomer Frank Lagodich and after battling back and forth, they agreed on an even chop of the remaining prize pool. Cappuccio left with second place (out of 1,474 entries) and $128,358 — his best live cash.

Volpe Gets Lucky to Stay Alive

Level 6 : 300/500, 500 ante
Mike Volpe
Mike Volpe

After Seat 6 limped early, Mike Volpe (no relation) made it 1,200 to play. Seat 1 (cutoff) called, then Seat 4 in the big blind 3-bet to 4,700 total. Seat 6 stuck around, making the call, as did Volpe. Seat 1 opted out.

With the pot at 16,100, the flop fell {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} and Seat 4 led out, Seat 6 folded, then Volpe moved in for his last 15,100, getting the call from his lone remaining opponent.

Seat 4 was ahead with {a-Clubs}{q-Spades} for top two pair. Volpe's {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} was in need of two running cards to improve. He stood up to leave, then the dealer completed the board with the {9-Diamonds} and the {7-Diamonds}, giving Volpe the backdoor diamond flush and the pot.

He resumed his seat and stacked his newly acquired chips, now playing 46,300.
