Wendy Freedman Bags Commanding Chip Lead on Day 1a

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 2,400 ante
Wendy Freedman
Wendy Freedman

The first of three starting flights at the August 2019 Colorado Poker Championship $1,100 Main Event got underway Thursday, seeing a total of 80 entries to start the weekend off with an action-packed day. Chips flew across the felt all day long with the tournament’s deep-stacked structure, and Wendy Freedman found herself with more than double the stack of her next-closest competitor upon the completion of play.

Freedman is one of 14 players to advance to Sunday’s Day 2 from the initial flight. She entered the tournament just before the first break of the day and more than doubled her stack in her first two hours of play. She saw that number steadily rise to over 200,000 throughout the evening before winning what proved to be the biggest hand of the day when she flopped a set and saw the turn and river bring a pair of jacks to give her a full house. She got a full stack in against then-chip leader Will Givens on the river, who had flopped the nut straight only to see it become second-best.

A few hands later, Freedman finished off Givens after he found himself all in in a four-bet pot preflop in a coin flip situation with pocket tens against Freedman’s ace-king. Freedman flopped a king and the rest was history as she continued her journey to her ultimate finishing total of 597,500.

Though 15 players advanced, only five finished with above-average stacks. The other four to do so besides Freedman were Al Hart (265,000), Barb Visher (224,000), Aaron Meyer (193,000), and Zach Gutierrez (187,000).

Notable players to not advance in the first heat of the tournament include Nick Pupillo, Noomis Jones, Matt Livingston, Brian Leitch and Greg Geller.

Day 1b will be played Friday at noon local time, with all entries having unlimited opportunities at finding a bag. PokerNews will be on the floor for another 14 levels of live reporting, so make sure to come back for more coverage as the tournament continues.

Freedman Wins Largest Pot of the Night Versus Givens

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 2,400 ante
Wendy Freedman
Wendy Freedman

Wendy Freedman opened from the cutoff to 5,200 and was called by Ellena Martinez in the small blind and Will Givens in the big blind.

The flop came {6-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} and Martinez checked. Givens fired 11,000 and was called by Freedman. Martinez folded, taking the pot heads up to the turn {j-Hearts}. Givens checked to Freedman, who bet 32,000 and was called.

The river came {j-Spades} and Givens checked again. Freedman bet 80,000 and Givens check-raised all in for Freedman's effective stack of 174,900. Freedman called.

Will Givens: {7-Diamonds}{4-Spades}
Wendy Freedman: {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}

Givens had flopped the nut straight to Freedman's set, however the turn and river paired the board to fill her up to a full house and earn the double, putting her firmly atop the leaderboard, while Givens finds himself back at work to rebuild his stack.

Patch Check-Raises Flop, Continues To Build

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Steve Patch
Steve Patch

Steve Patch has been seen accumulating chips throughout the entirety of Day 1a here at the Golden Gates Casino Poker Parlour. He just took down another pot where a player in middle position opened to 3,500 and received calls from Evan Shaughnessy on the button, Patch in the small blind, and Elenna Martinez in the big blind.

The flop came {9-Spades}{8-Spades}{4-Spades} and action checked all the way to Shaughnessy. He bet 4,500 and Patch quickly put in a check-raise to 13,000. Martinez and the original raiser got out of the way and Shaughnessy thought for a few seconds before letting his hand go as well.

Patch then won another pot and is now healthily over 150,000 and threatening to eclipse the 200,000-mark.

Pat Pineda
Pat Pineda

Nick Pupillo was seen picking up his cards and holding them face down as the dealer was completing a runout, signifying that he in the process of being eliminated from the tournament.

Pat Pineda's winning hand of {a-Clubs}{q-Hearts} was in front of him as the runout {5-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{a-Hearts}{a-Spades}{2-Diamonds} was finished, giving him trip aces with a queen kicker.

According to another player at the table, Pineda had limped his ace-queen from under the gun and Pupillo shoved his remaining chips from middle position with jack-ten. He found himself drawing dead by the turn and was eliminated from the tournament; meanwhile Pineda has been steadily accumulating and finds himself as one of the chip leaders as play continues into the evening.

Visher More than Doubles With Nuts

Level 6 : 200/400, 400 ante
Barb Visher
Barb Visher

David Bybee opened to 1,200 from under the gun and received calls from the player to his left as well as the hijack. Action then folded around to Barb Visher in the small blind, who called. The big blind defended to take action to the streets five ways.

The dealer fanned a flop of {6-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{3-Spades} and Visher checked. The big blind led out with a bet of 2,000 and Bybee called. The player to Bybee's left and the hijack both folded, bringing action back to Visher. She made the call. The turn fell {2-Clubs} and Visher checked.

The big blind bet again, putting out 2,800. Both Bybee and Visher called. The river came {7-Hearts} and Visher checked once more. The big blind fired for a third time, betting 3,500. Bybee then put in a raise to 13,000 and Visher looked at her stack of 16,800 before putting it in. The big blind folded.

"I have to call," said Bybee. His hand was tabled to be {j-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for flush.

Visher turned over {a-Clubs}{5-Clubs} for the nut flush and the dealer counted out her stack to confirm it as she patiently awaited the pot she had just won.

Richard Seale
Richard Seale

There was over 16,000 in the pot on a board of {8-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{k-Spades} and Richard Seale announced he was all in, effectively putting his opponent in the cutoff to the test for the last of his chips. He received a call and hands were tabled.

Richard Seale: {10-Clubs}{9-Hearts}
Opponent: {a-Spades}{10-Spades}

Seale found himself needing to fade an ace or a king to earn the pot and the knockout. The river came {9-Spades} to give him an unnecessary full house and he raked in the pot to make him one of the largest stacks in the room.
