Greg Geller Tops Leader Board on Day 1b of the Colorado Poker Championship

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 2,400 ante
Greg Geller
Greg Geller

Greg Geller has been a mainstay atop the chip counts on Day 1s as of late at the Golden Gates Casino and Poker Parlour in Black Hawk, Colorado, and he found himself in familiar territory finishing Day 1b of the August 2019 Colorado Poker Championship $1,100 Main Event as the chip leader with a total of 365,500.

Day 1b saw 90 entries added to the tally, with 18 players putting chips into bags at the end of the night. Geller was two of those entries, having been eliminated from the tournament on his first bullet after spending about four hours never getting much above starting stack. He got right back in on the action and was able to chip up slightly with his second bullet. However, he still never got much going until just before the final break of the night, when he finally eclipsed the 100,000-mark in chips.

The largest hand of Geller’s night came in the final level of play when he knocked out Mike Wheeler, who boasted a large stack throughout most of the day. Geller raised ace-jack with the ace of clubs and saw a jack-high flop with three clubs. He bet the flop and then shoved the turn, only to get instantly called by Wheeler’s jack-nine with no club. Geller unnecessarily improved to the nut flush on the river and suddenly found himself near the top of the leader board.

Second in chips for the day was WSOP bracelet winner Adrian Buckley, who finished the day with 293,000 in chips. Buckley also won a massive pot near the end of the day when his flopped set of fives held versus a flopped open-ended straight draw when stacks got in versus Andrew Dea. Dea also had one of the largest stacks of the day prior to that point, though he did still advance, finishing the day with 128,000 in chips.

Rounding out the top five in chips are Ben Keeline (210,500), Nate Zoller (192,000), and Matt Voorhees (187,000).

Other notable players to advance include Thomas Fuller (161,500), David Levi (87,500), and recent HPT Golden Gates champion Austin Peck (47,500).

The field was full of notable players and many of them found themselves eliminated prior to the end of play. Chris Tryba, Aaron Frei, Ryan Dodson, Danny Gonzales, and Nick Pupillo were among those to fall short of bagging and all who have yet to do so will have one last chance on Saturday’s Day 1c.

Cards will be in the air for Day 1c at noon local time. Come back to PokerNews to find out who advances on their last chance.

Angstead Busts Pupillo, More Than Doubles Through Dixon

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 2,400 ante
Don Angstead
Don Angstead

Nick Pupillo shoved blind from under the gun for his last 19,700. Action folded to Rich Dixon and he shoved over the top for just under 100,000. Don Angstead called off his last 71,200 from the button and the three turned up their hands.

Nick Pupillo: {6-Hearts}{2-Clubs}
Rich Dixon: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Don Angstead: {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}

"Natural eight!" said Pupillo, though Dixon and Angstead were likely to be the ones competing for both pots.

The {2-Spades} came in the window on a complete flop of {2-Spades}{7-Hearts}{q-Hearts}, giving Angstead a flopped set and all but sealing the deal for him. The turn {3-Clubs} and river {a-Spades} did just that and he knocked out Pupillo, leaving Dixon with just over ten big blinds along the way. Meanwhile, Angstead now finds himself with a comfortable stack nearing the end of the evening.

Buckley More Than Doubles With Set; Chip Counts from Table 3

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 2,400 ante
Adrian Buckley
Adrian Buckley

Adrian Buckley opened from the hijack to 5,200 and received calls from Rich Dixon in the cutoff, Ben Keeline on the button, and Andrew Dea in the big blind.

Buckley joked about how he was called by at least four people each time he opened today as the dealer brought a flop of {5-Hearts}{7-Spades}{k-Hearts}. Dea checked and Buckley made a continuation-bet of 12,000. Dixon and Keeline both called. Dea then announced he was all in.

Buckley quickly called and Dixon then went into the tank for close to two minutes before folding. Keeline then found action on himself and asked for a count, which was totaled to be 130,200. He thought for close to a minute as well before folding.

"Do you have sevens?" asked Buckley, showing {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds}

"No, just open-ended," responded Dea as he tabled {6-Clubs}{4-Spades}

Buckley was able to fade the straight outs as the turn {a-Hearts} and river {2-Spades} came to secure him the double and more.

Ben Keeline

Ben Keeline was again involved in a massive pot n the last hand before break, detailing the situation as cards were again in the air.

According to Keeline, Samuel Uhlmann opened to 3,500 from under the gun and was called by Rich Dixon in middle position. Keeline called from the cutoff, as did both Eddie Konarske and Nick Pupillo out of the blinds.

Pupillo then check-raised to 45,000 and Uhlmann folded. Dixon went into the tank before folding as well and Keeline put the rest of his chips in. Pupillo called.

Ben Keeline: {9-Hearts}{7-Hearts}

Andrew Dea was at 52,000 coming back from dinner break and chipped up to around 120,000 in Level 10. He was since heard saying he had 200,000 and currently appears to be just shy of that figure, albeit one of the largest stacks in the room as play continues into the evening.

Gius Misses For Tournament Life

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Greg Gius
Greg Gius

The dealer was overheard announcing an all-in raise with action on the turn on a board reading {4-Hearts}{6-Spades}{7-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. Greg Gius was in the big blind and had shoved versus Nate Zoller, who was in the small blind. Zoller called.

Gius remarked that he had a decent shot as long as Zoller did not already have a flush.

Greg Gius: {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Nate Zoller: {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}

Gius found his nut flush draw and gutshot straight draw up against Zoller's set of sixes, in need of spiking another heart on the river to survive. The river fell {4-Clubs} and he recited his initials, "GG," albeit for a different reason as he got up and left the table.

Keeline Knocks Out Horvath Before Break

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Scott Horvath
Scott Horvath

On the last hand before the dinner break, Ben Keeline knocked out Scott Horvath and just shared a recount of the information.

Keeline limped from early position and saw a limp behind him from Horvath in the cutoff. Nick Pupillo was on the button and limped as well. Greg Collins then completed his small blind and Adrian Buckley checked his option.

The five players saw a flop of {5-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} and action checked through. The turn came {3-Hearts} and action was checked to Keeline. He bet 3,000 and Horvath called. Pupillo, Collins, and Buckley all folded to take action heads up to the river.

The river came {10-Diamonds} and Keeline bet 15,000 into the pot of what was around 10,000. Horvath thought for a bit and shoved for 20,050. Keeline took about six seconds before calling, leaving himself about 3,500 behind.

Horvath showed {a-Spades}{2-Clubs} and Keeline tabled {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}, earning the knockout with his jack kicker. Horvath then rebought during the dinner break and is back in on the action.

Fuller Scores Knockout In Huge Pot

Level 9 : 400/800, 800 ante
Thomas Fuller
Thomas Fuller

Austin Peck opened to 1,800 under the gun and received three calls from Greg Gius in early position, a player in middle position, and a third player. Action then folded to Thomas Fuller in the big blind, who three-bet to 11,000. Gius called and the player in middle position did as well, taking action three ways to the streets.

The flop came {7-Spades}{q-Clubs}{9-Hearts} and both Fuller and Gius checked. The middle-position player shoved for around 26,000, putting aciton back on Fuller, who put in one chip to signify a call. Gius folded, later saying he had two jacks.

Thomas Fuller: {a-Hearts}{q-Spades}
Middle-Position Player: {k-Spades}{9-Spades}

"Agh! Good check," the all-in player said, realizing he needed another nine, a king, or running spades in order to stay alive. The turn {3-Clubs} left him with one more chance at five outs, none of which he hit as the dealer burned and turned the river {7-Spades} to send him to the rail.
