Barbosa Brutalized; Shlez New Chip Leader

EPT Warsaw winner Joao Barbosa open-shoved the cutoff and found a caller in big stack Vadim Shlez on the button. Barbosa already had a look of defeat in his eyes. Everyone else folded. Oh dear.

Barbosa: {2-Clubs} {2-Hearts}
Shlez: {A-Diamonds} {A-Clubs}

Board: {4-Hearts} {A-Hearts} {7-Spades} {4-Spades} {A-Spades}

"Wow, that's all?" said a very cheerful Shlez, admiring his quad aces. Barbosa had stood up and left as soon as Shlez had made the full house and we're not sure if he even saw the fourth ace.

With that, it looks as though Mr. Shlez who, according to his lady railer is from New York City, is our new chip leader, on around 400,000. His name and accent suggest some foreign extraction or other, though.

Perhaps the Phase of the Moon Matters Too

Barer of ill questions
Barer of ill questions
Ami Barer was the Day 1b overnight chip leader, but things haven't gone as smoothly for him on Day 2. He tried opening a recent pot to 5,500 from the cutoff. Small blind Michael Tureniec asked Barer how much he had (about 90,000 total), then squeezed his own cards. What he saw induced a raise to 17,200.

Big blind Ted Lawson, who has seemed to be short all day and still has only about 40,000, seemed a bit pained about what to do. He folded after thirty seconds.

"How much do you have?" Barer asked Lawson.

"What difference does it make?" an irritated Lawson replied.

Barer turned to the dealer, "Am I not allowed to ask him that?"

"What difference does it make?" Lawson repeated. "I'm not in the hand!"

"It actually does make a difference," Barer told him.

"It does?" Lawson asked bitterly. "Then here." He lifted his hands and pushed his big chips forward so that Barer could eyeball his stack. Satisfied with what he saw, Barer folded.

Laak - makes Mercier squirm
Laak - makes Mercier squirm
An American-on-American confrontation saw Jason Mercier bet out 9,600 on the turn of a {3-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {A-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} board, and Phil Laak flat called.

River: {J-Diamonds}

With all kinds of fun draws coming in on that river, Mercier now checked, and Laak bet 16,900. Mercier removed his sunglasses and spent a minute or two squirming, before passing and evening up their stacks somewhat.

Mercier: 120,000
Laak: 128,000

Lance Funston Comes Back from Break All Chatty

Lance Funston, despite having dropped in chips to under 70k, seems to be having more and more of a good time. Funston is chatting nonstop to whomever will listen, despite wearing large metallic earphones. A couple of players on the table, have been smiling in spite of themselves, as his descriptive monologues of what he's doing gets to them.

An example:

He flat called preflop. "There's such a lot in preflop, the antes, the blinds, keep it neighborly, let's have a family thing here," he said.

He and the big blind checked it all the way down until the board read {A-Diamonds} {4-Diamonds} {10-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {J-Clubs}. Before the big blind could act or speak, he started again, "I could show down this hand and win it. Or he'll win it. But I am instead going to muck, and let this gentleman take the pot."

The gentleman in question said, "What if I have deuce-three?"

"You win then!"

Big Pairs Do Their Thing for the Eastern Bloc

On one table, it was Alexander Kravchenko turning over pocket kings after just calling the turn and river of a jack-high board against his lone opponent, who turned over {Q-?} {J-?} for a pair of jacks. Having his kings hold up gave Kravchenko enough chips to climb to 105,000.

A few tables over, Liya Gerasimova was all in with {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} against an opponent's {A-Spades} {K-Hearts}. She shook her head bitterly when the flop came {4-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}; the turn {Q-Spades} got a bit of a murmur out of the assembled on-lookers. The river blanked out to give Gerasimova a double-up to about 85,000.

Tabatabai Finally Takes the Plunge - and the Water's Fine

Tabatabai: prescient?
Tabatabai: prescient?
Dwindling to desperation level, John Tabatabai didn't look even slightly perturbed that his stack was under 28k and falling. Relaxed as he's appeared for two days, he finally made a stand reraising Joe Hachem's cutoff raise of 6k to 16k from the big blind, which was effectively moving all in. A verbal, "All in/call," was over in seconds and they were on their backs.

"One overcard?" pleaded Tabatabai, who tabled {A-Clubs} {7-Diamonds}. Nope, Hachem held {A-Diamonds} {8-Hearts} .

Flop: {6-Diamonds} {4-Spades} {3-Clubs}

"Oh, I'll get there, don't worry," said Tabatabai, calmly.

Turn: {K-Diamonds}
River: {5-Hearts}

"Oh, I've got there." This time that's true. The straight wins him a double up and a chance to get back in the game.

Texas Two-Step

The players at Tables 1 through 15 have returned from dinner and re-taken their seats. They are now playing the same Level 13 that the players at Tables 16 and higher just played. Those players are off for a dinner break of their own.

Flying Below the Radar

Young Frenchman Tristan Clemencon is up to 270,000 after a solid day so far. Third at EPT Deauville this year, and with a fair few results over the last two years already, he's one to watch in the second half of Day 2, without a doubt.

A few other counts:

Isabelle Mercier - 90,000
Dag Martin Mikkelsen - 108,000
Boris Becker - 85,000
Michael Greco - 150,000

Ivan Gets a Terrible Call

A very bizarre call has doubled up Ivan Lehoczky. His opponent raised and Lehoczky shoved, as befit a man who had {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}. After a few moments assessing the situation, his opponent decided that he had the odds to call for almost his whole stack -- and flipped a really not very good at all {Q-Hearts} {2-Hearts}.

Board: a briefly exciting but ultimately no cigar {A-Spades} {3-Hearts} {10-Spades} {K-Hearts} {Q-Spades}

Spindler Gaining Ground on Chip Leaders

Dmitry Shterenlikht just lost around half his stack to Ben Spindler after building a pot out of position. Shterenlikht bet 40,000 on the turn with a board of {6-Hearts} {2-Clubs} {A-Clubs} {5-Diamonds}, but then passed when he was raised all in. Spindler is about to break the 300k chip barrier which has eluded all but a very few at any point today...
