Day 1b Completed

Day 1b Concludes; Onwards to Day 2

Ami Barer
Ami Barer
It's been a crazy Day 1b over here at the Monte Carlo Bay. 539 runners started today, a whole bunch more than the 396 that played Day 1a, and if anything the field was even more star-studded -- this whole tournament has so far amounted to more or less a who's who of international poker.

Those who fell by the wayside today included Devilfish, Gavin Griffin, Neil Channing and John Juanda, as well as reigning champion Glen Chorny and hiphop star Nelly. Those who have come out in fine shape for Day 2 however, include Ami Barer and Dag Palovic, who are both currently vying for the chip lead. They are closely trailed by Steeve "Not A Typo" Berdah, David Williams, Sandra Naujoks, Yevgeniy Timoshenko and Andy Bloch. Each are on very decent stacks and it's anyone's game.

Join us tomorrow at noon local time when the 500 or so remaining runners join together for the first time to see who will be glorious, and who will be spending the rest of the week on the beach.

Smur-fits in a Last Minute Double Up

Alan Smurfit just doubled through to around 35,000 after getting his stack in preflop with {8-Spades} {8-Diamonds} vs. the big blind's {A-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}. He had raised to 3,450 from early position, and was never going anywhere after the big blind put him all in. It had looked like he was coming back to the danger zone, but now he'll just be back around his starting stack of 30,000.

No More Wine for Hedlund

On a {9-Hearts} {8-Hearts} {10-Hearts} flop, Gino Alacqua moved all in for 17,000, a massive overbet to the pot. Unfortunately, his opponent in the hand was a rather tipsy Peter Hedlund, who started poking around in the pot. The floor was called over to tell him not to touch the pot. He stopped actually touching it, but counted it out, chip by chip, making stabbing gestures towards it with his finger. Eventually he finished. "How much is it?" called out a railer. "No f***ing idea," replied Hedlund, and proceeded to dwell for a long time, both players now out of their seats and staring intently at the middle of the table.

Eventually, Hedlund folded {A-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} face up. Alacqua showed him just an enigmatic {J-Clubs}.

Anti-Stall Device: Activated!

Tournament Director Thomas Kremser has paused the clock with 12:39 remaining in Level 8. He has instructed his dealers to deal out exactly six more hands at each table, at which point play will conclude for Day 1b.

The Chip Leader is...?

The big stacks are doing that thing again where they bunch all together and make it impossible to determine who the chip leader is. Our best money right now is on either Ami Barer or Dag Palovic. Palovic asked us a half hour ago who the chip leader was and how many chips behind he was. He has since accumulated enough chips to put himself right in the running for the mantle.

BinGRRR

After this hand, it looks like Michael Binger is frustrated with himself, John Shipley, and poker in general:

From the button, Shipley raised preflop, and then proceeded to bet every street. with Binger taking longer and longer to call as the pot got larger and the bets got accompanyingly so. The flop was {A-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} and Binger check-called 6,000. The turn was the {3-Clubs} and action was the same, but 10,000. It was on the {8-Clubs} river that Shipley's all in move for 19,275 really sent Binger into the tank. WAY into the tank. It took six minutes for Binger to count out the chips, weigh them in his hand, remov his sunglasses, then his headphones, and pay off Shipley's {A-Spades} {3-Diamonds} for two pair.

"I knew he was weak preflop!" said a frustrated Binger to a just-busted Liv Boeree, bounding out of his seat to seek commiseration from someone with even fewer chips than he. She seemed sympathetic, however.

Liv No Longer Live

Boeree: Can have a lie-in tomorrow
Boeree: Can have a lie-in tomorrow
Liv Boeree, who faced the last level with an ever-dwindling stack, found herself in a find-a-push-spot mode. Not the most fun kind of poker, and she ended up in a race situation with her {A-?} {Q-?} vs. {10-?} {10-?}. No spike of the overs and she's on the rail. "At least I can drink freely tonight," she said, looking on the bright side.

Bjorin Bjor-Out

Chris Bjorin is gone, as evidenced by him extremely helpfully standing right next to the press corner and telling his friend in a clear and loud tone, "I just got knocked out."

PearlJammer Jams

Jon "PearlJammer" Turner is fresh off a deep run in the 2009 PokerStars SCOOP High-Stakes Main Event. His fortunes here today haven't been as good, but he did just double up to about 28,000 with a flopped set of deuces against a turned top-two pair. 28,000 isn't going to get PearlJammer much with blinds at 400 and 800; he's still got a lot of work to do, if a bit more space within which to do it.
