Matern Falters

Arnaud Mattern
Arnaud Mattern
Arnaud Mattern just had his table broken, and he was moved to the very last seat all the way in the extreme corner of the room. After picking our way through the crowds, our reporters found him quickly involved in another pot. With the five board cards reading {10-Clubs} {3-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} {A-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}, there were about 11,000 chips already piled in the center of the table. Mattern was first to act, and he checked to his lone opponent. The young, blond-haired player stacked out a technicolor bet of 9,500 chips, drawing a long pause from Mattern. "I feel like something was weird on the turn," he pondered. After two or three minutes, Mattern dropped in the calling chips, only to see his opponent turn over {K-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} for the winning Broadway straight. Mattern simply nodded knowingly and slipped his cards back to the dealer. He has taken a step back to just under 12,000 chips now.
