Early Action Turns to Mild Disappointment

Annette Obrestad raising is always a promising start to a hand, particularly when she gets called by two players, one of them Johan van Til, and then gets reraised by the gentleman in the small blind. This time it was to come to almost nothing, though.

Annette made the call but both players behind her folded, and they went heads up to the uninspiring {8-Clubs} {3-Spades} {5-Hearts} flop. Mr. Small Blind bet out, Ms. Obrestad folded leaving herself a still respectable 27,000, and the small crowd of railers and media that had formed around the table dispersed.

'Mark of Success

We're not exactly sure what happened, but there was well over 30,000 in the pot by the time we arrived to witness Kim Garmark moving all in for a similar amount on the river, the board reading {5-Hearts} {J-Diamonds} {3-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} {6-Hearts}. His opponent gave it some brief thought before folding and resting his suddenly weary head in his hands; Garmark meanwhile raked in the enormous pot to take thorough command of his table.

Lodden and Minieri

The two late-coming Team PokerStars Pros have taken their seats and gotten right to work. Walking past Johnny Lodden's table for the first time sees him sitting with more than 40,000 after just an orbit or two of play. Wandering across to the far side of the room, we finally spotted Dario Minieri sitting amidst a crowd of tall people. And he was involved in a hand, to nobody's surprise.

Pieter Jong opened the pot with a raise to 600 from the hijack seat. Next door, Preben Stukkan bumped it up to 1,750, but Minieri wanted to play for more still. On the button, the Italian four-bet it up to 5,150 total. Jong quickly folded when the bet came back around to him, but Stukkan tanked until someone called the clock before reluctantly releasing his cards as well.

Minieri is up to about 37,000.

Mattern Matriculating Up the Board

Arnaud Mattern
Arnaud Mattern
Aleksey Tkachenko raised from middle position before the flop, and he found action only from Arnaud Mattern in the small blind.

The two men check-checked the flop of {7-Hearts} {6-Spades} {A-Diamonds}, and the {2-Clubs} hit fourth street. After another Mattern check, Tkachenko slid out a bet of 675, and Mattern called before the chips had even touched the felt. The {9-Spades} filled out the board, and the action went check-check again.

"Mmm-hmm?" asked Arnaud without opening his mouth. Tkachenko tabled {K-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} for the nut no pair, and Mattern showed his own {K-Clubs} {Q-Spades} to take half the pot.

Okay, it's not the most dramatic hand in the world, but it does provide a good excuse to tell you that Arnaud is sitting right on 50,000 chips as the first break approaches.

Who's Been Stealing the Blinds?

The first couple of levels don't always see a great deal of movement, chip-wise, but it all counts! Players who are currently in possession of larger-than-they-have-any-right-to stacks of low denomination green chips include Jeff Sarwer, Johan van Til, Sami "LarsLuzak" Kelopuro and Arnaud Mattern. Of these thieving scoundrels, only Mattern seems to have improved significantly from his starting stack.

Visser Confused

Ruben Visser
Ruben Visser
A curious little hit for the stack of Team PokerStars Pro Ruben Visser just as we head towards the first break of the day.

Visser opened for 400 in mid position and picked up a call from Jannik Laigaard on the button. The gentleman in the big blind made it 1,600 to go, and back to Visser, who re-popped for 3,800 total. The hapless Laigaard folded, Mr. Big Blind made the call, and they saw a flop.

Flop: {J-Clubs} {2-Diamonds} {3-Clubs}

Mr. Big Blind insta-checked, and after a moment Visser checked too.

Turn: {7-Spades}

This time Mr. Big Blind bet out 4,000. Visser looked extremely confused and spent some minutes considering his options before deciding the best one was to fold.

Visser takes tiny dive, more of a swoop really, to 25,000.

Teng Located

Andrew Teng, presumably a relatively late registration judging by his location at Table 41, right at the far end of the room, has had a decent couple of levels by the looks of it.

When we strolled by his table, he was in the process of check-raising on the turn of a {6-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {Q-Hearts} {2-Clubs} board. His opponent called, but Teng bet out on the {7-Diamonds} river, inducing a speedy fold.

After that, Teng is sitting on an above-average 37,000.
