Pairs A'plenty

Jan Skampa
Jan Skampa
Dario Minieri opened the pot to 2,200 from early position. Next door, Bahram Beleiverdi made the call, as did Martin Sjelle a few seats further down the line. On the button, Jan Skampa double-checked his cards and moved all in for a rather meager 14,700 total. Minieri asked for a count before folding, but Beleiverdi quickly announced an all in of his own. Sjelle slouched in his chair and shook his head before folding, putting Skampa heads up for his tournament life.

Showdown
Beleiverdi: {7-Diamonds} {7-Spades}
Skampa: {Q-Hearts} {Q-Spades}

In a bit of stating the obvious, Beleiverdi said, "I thought you had something." Sjelle told the table he folded pocket jacks, and they all seemed a bit surprised. In any event, time to run a board to see if Skampa can stay: {6-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} {5-Hearts} {J-Clubs}. Yep, he can stay, and he'll stick around with more than twice as many chips as he had before the hand.

The debate about Sjelle's supposed pocket jacks fired up again once the river card fell. It started with Johnny Lodden indignantly asking, "You folded pocket jacks?!"

Sjelle: "He said all in too," pointing at Beleiverdi.

Lodden: "I know. Beautiful spot!" (smirking)

Dario Minieri chimed in too. "You didn't fold pocket jacks, did you?!" Sjelle nodded slowly while Dario continued. "I mean, I think you would fold pocket jacks. But I don't think you did."

Ace-Rag Plays for Ostbjerg

Johnny Ostbjerg and Yorane Kerignard somehow managed to build a pot of more than 40,000 before the flop, which is just about the time we walked up to the table. The dealer dealt out {2-Clubs} {A-Hearts} {K-Hearts}, and both players checked. Fourth street brought the {3-Diamonds} and another check from Ostbjerg. Kerignard stuck out a bet of 25,000, and Ostbjerg quickly and clumsily called it.

The river was the {10-Spades}, and the players checked it down once again. Kerignard was first to table his {Q-Spades} {Q-Clubs}, but he was on the losing end against Ostbjerg's {A-Clubs} {6-Hearts}. That's a big pot being pushed across the felt, and Ostbjerg is all the way up to 135,000 after that win.

The Grass Is Always More 'Verdi on the Other Side

Jan Skampa will not be making his third EPT final table this time around. After a dreadful afternoon where his stack seemed to have drastically shrunk every time we strolled by his table, he finally smacked pocket queens into Bahram Beleiverdi's pocket kings to send him home.

Beleiverdi meanwhile is up to 170,000.

Toeing the Klein

We just caught the very end of a massive hand between Morten Klein and Patrik Kaltrud. The board read {7-Clubs} {10-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} {A-Diamonds} {K-Clubs} and there was a massive 37,000 bet in front of Kaltrud with over 50,000 in the pot already; the clock had been called on Klein who was huffing and puffing.

Eventually Klein called for what amounted to most of his stack - and then mucked when Kaltrud quietly turned over {Q-Hearts} {J-Clubs} for a straight.

"That was creative on the flop," commented Visser intriguingly, but what happened on the flop os lost in the mists of time.

Kaltrud is up to around 200,000.

Hold Everything

We've played two levels, and it's time for a 15-minute break. For break-time entertainment, try to visualize the masses of hungry players trekking through the blizzard in search of rations from the convenience store next door.

WWJLD

Johnny Lodden
Johnny Lodden
In the very last hand of the last level, a big hand broke out involving Johnny Lodden, spilling well into the break. Here's what went down:

Lodden raised from early position, making it 2,800 to go. Danny Neess reraised to 7,700 from the small blind, and Lodden obliged him with the call.

The flop came out {2-Diamonds} {3-Spades} {10-Clubs}, and Neess continued out with another 6,500 chips. Lodden called, and he would call another 16,600 on the {7-Diamonds} turn.

Fifth street came the {5-Diamonds}, and Neess barreled again, firing 32,500 this time. Lodden went deep into the think tank as a crowd of spectators pressed in around the table. Finally, he let out a frustrated, "Nice bluff," and slung his cards into the muck, cueing the break for the rest of the room.

Lodden's been knocked down a peg, sitting right at 50,000 now.

Thorsson Doing Well

Kristoffer Thorsson has been quietly accumulating all day, and losing a smallish pot just now barely dented his impressive stack.

His opponent check-called 4,500 form Thorsson on the {4-Spades} {A-Spades} {8-Clubs} flop and another 11,000 on the {J-Clubs} turn. They both checked the {Q-Hearts} river and Thorsson flipped {K-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds} for a rivered pair, but Mr. Opponent turned over {A-Clubs} {10-Clubs} to take the pot.

Nevertheless, Thorsson is very comfortable on 180,000.

Fohrenbach Moving Backwards

Mr. F-Bach
Mr. F-Bach
We joined a hand in progress as the dealer ran out a flop of {3-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {2-Diamonds}. The table checked to Ricky Fohrenbach, and he put out a bet of 5,000 in the form of one tidy yellow chip. Gijsbert Pieter made the call in the big blind as the third player ducked out of the hand.

Heads up now, the turn brought the {K-Hearts}. When Pieter checked, Fohrenbach made a follow-up bet of 6,500. That was called as well, bringing the {Q-Clubs} on the river. This time Pieter decided to steal the betting lead, and he fired out 11,000 chips. Fohrenbach didn't seem to like it, but he flatly announced, "Call."

Pieter tabled {Q-Spades} {Q-Diamonds} for the rivered set. Fohrenbach checked and double-checked his hole cards, but they wouldn't change for him. He kicked them in, losing the pot and dropping down to 35,500.
