A Numbers Game

We're still waiting for the official tallies from the tournament staff, but it looks like 427 players have shown up for Day 1b. If that stands, that'll put the total field size at a very impressive 766 runners.

The Habers and Hab-Nots

With the flop reading {5-Spades} {4-Diamonds} {2-Hearts}, one Eric Haber ("But ze French one," he told me, to avoid confusion with American Eric "Sheets" Haber, whom he is not) moved all in. There ensued some dwelling, before Patrick Bruel made the call - and then instantly regretted it as Haber turned over {K-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}. Bruel could only boast {J-Spades} {J-Diamonds}, and following a couple of raggy blanks on the turn and river ({8-Spades} and {3-Spades} respectively), Haber shouted, "ALLEZ!" and doubled to around 80,000. Bruel is left with a still above-average 48,000.

Break it Up

Well, apparently they were just waiting for us to walk away. Table Pagano has successfully folded its way to being broken, and the players are now scattered amidst the tables over here in the main tournament room. Jeff Sarwer is sitting right in front of us; in fact, he's sitting where Antony Lellouche used to be sitting. That means they've either changed the event to a Tag Team format, or Lellouche has been sent packing.

Table 39 Tidbits

On paper, Table 39 is the most exciting ticket in town. That's what we'll call Table Pagano over in the secondary ballroom. However, the show isn't exactly living up to the billing so far. Action is at a premium over there, and table chatter is even more difficult to come by. We stood on the rail and watched three orbits go by. Of those hands, two were actually marginally interesting. Emphasis on marginally:

Under the gun, Jeff Sarwer opened the pot to 1,025. He found calling action from a player in middle position, as well as Luca Pagano in the big blind. The flop came out {8-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} {2-Clubs}, and Pagano checked. Sarwer continued out with a bet of 2,550, and that was good enough to put him heads up with Pagano as he was the only caller. Fourth street brought the {8-Clubs}, and Pagano took pause. He decided to take the betting lead with 4,400 chips, and Sarwer tanked for ages before folding.

A few hands later, Sarwer raised from the cutoff, and Catherine Hong called on the button. The two saw a flop of {7-Spades} {9-Clubs} {3-Diamonds}, and Sarwer fired 1,625. Hong quickly called, and they both checked the turn {A-Diamonds}. On the river, the {9-Diamonds} drew another check from Sarwer, and Hong decided a bet of 2,200 was in order. Sarwer shrugged and called and gestured to see his opponent's hand. Hong showed up {5-Hearts} {7-Hearts}. "Oh, you have a seven?" Sawer half-asked. He nodded, double-checked his hole cards, and slipped them into the muck.

Sarwer was sitting with about 68,000 when we decided it was time to stare at another table for a while.

Boat Rescues Coren

Vicky Coren was down around 4,000 chips when she moved all in from the button. No callers, and she tabled {A-?} {Q-?} as she scooped in the blinds and antes, building her stack to 5,625.

The next hand, one player opened to 1350, and Oliverio da Silva called. Coren shipped it in, and the original raiser called. "I have absolutely no chance of winning this hand," said Ms. Coren. "Even if he has two three, I'm not winning this hand."

Hearing that, the da Silva decided to call as well. Thinking the action was complete, he started to table his hand, but Vicky stopped him before he could show the other player with a live hand.

Flop: {A-Spades} {9-Spades} {8-Spades} Both active players checked.

Turn: {A-Hearts}

The first man checked to da Silva, then quickly mucked when da Silva moved all in. Finally Oliverio got to table his hand, and with {5-Spades} {4-Spades}, he was sure he had the winner. But Coren turned up {9-Clubs} {9-Diamonds} for a full house, meaning da Silva was drawing dead.

Another player at the table congratulated Coren on her triple up. "Back in business now," he said. "Am I?" she asked with a shrug and got back to stacking her chips.

Martinez Doubles Through Minieri

Dario Minieri and Barbara Martinez saw a {9-?} {7-?} {4-?} flop with two hearts on it, and Martinez bet out 6,000. Minieri promptly raised to 35,000, covering Ms. Martinez. She thought about it for a long, long time - and eventually called all in.

Martinez: {A-?} {9-?} for top pair
Minieri: {K-?} {5-?} for absolutely nothing

The turn and river blanked, and Martinez doubled to a very respectable 50,000. Minieri, meanwhile, drops down from the top spot - on 98,000, he's now been pipped by fellow countryman and Team PokerStars Pro Luca Pagano.

Moving In Together

While most of the players are in the giant ballroom here at the Casino Barrière de Deauville, the day began with about 10 tables in the actual poker room. Now there are only four left, and with the field shrinking quickly as dinner break approaches, soon everyone will be in the ballroom. Until then, one of the tables in the poker room just keeps getting scarier. Seats 1, 2, and 3 have been occupied by Fabrice Soulier, Melanie Weisner, and Luca Pagano all day. Now Jeff Sarwar has moved into seat 4, and Catherine Hong is in seat 5. Table change, anyone?
