A middle-position player raised to 425 and Daniel Negreanu called from the hijack. Action folded to the player in the big blind and he raised to 2,500. The original raiser folded and Negreanu made the call.
The flop fell and Negreanu's opponent bet 3,200. Negreanu quickly kicked in his hand, dropping to 25,000.
Arnaud Mattern has had a very unfortunate start to the day.
First up he found himself holding on an flop; not bad. But the turn came another six, the river an irrelevant three, and his opponent turned over a six to beat Mattern's top two.
A couple hands later and Mattern found himself holding in the small blind. He and Luca Falaschi got all the way to the river of an board, at which point Falaschi turned over pocket fours for a full house and took possession of most of Mattern's remaining chips.
Mattern was down to just 6,000 and looked rather depressed.
"BUT," he said, "The good news is I brought my snowboard..."
There was around 12,500 in the pot by the turn of the board, when the gentleman in the small blind bet out 6,100. Thomas Bichon stared expressionlessly at the felt for a while before making the call.
They saw a river and this time Mr. Small Blind thought about it for a while before betting out 5,000. Bichon, his face still completely blank, tanked up for some time, and then passed, leaving himself on just 12,300. Mr. Small Blind flashed him the .
With the board reading , action was checked to Jesper Hougaard and he bet 400 into the pot. It folded around to the player in the big blind and he made it 1,000 to go. Hougaard called, landing the on the turn. His opponent bet 1,550 and Hougaard took his time, making the call after a few moments.
The river brought the and the big blind fired 3,125 into the middle. Hougaard quickly matched it and his opponent immediately mucked. Hougaard opted not to show and is up to 39,000 after the hand.
On a board with about 2,800 in the pot, Daniel Negreanu bet 1,250. His opponent min-raised to 2,500 and sent a befuddled Negreanu into the tank. "There's only one hand I can beat," murmured Negreanu. He made the call and his opponent turned over .
Negreanu tabled and was relieved to win the pot. "Alright, there were two hands I could beat!" he said, upping his back to around 30,000.
Aside from the occasional spectacular exit, much of the action thus far, in traditional early-Day-1 style, has consisted of small pots with no showdown.
For example, a gentleman raised in mid position and Daniel Negreanu in the small blind made the call. They saw a flop and Negreanu bet out 800; his opponent folded and Negreanu ever so slightly upped his stack to 28,000.
A few tables over, Dara O'Kearney on the button called a raise to 450 from under the gun and he and his opponent saw a flop which both players checked. Mr. Under The Gun checked the turn as well, and then promptly folded to a 550 bet from O'Kearney, who edged up to 26,000.
Chips are always going to fly when someone finds a big hand, though - we arrived just in time to see a clearly delighted Jesper Hougaard raking in a huge pot and tossing his pocket kings back to the dealer. Lucky man, he's up to around 50,000.
