EPT Copenhagen Day 2: Weisner Grabs The Lead at the Death

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Our Chip Leader
Our Chip Leader

When we started Day 2 of the European Poker Tour Copenhagen there were 179 players, from differing nationalities, and one American leading the lot. Steve O'Dwyer was our Day 1a leader with 190,975 chips and he was the man everyone was chasing throughout the five levels of play. When that day ended there were 72 players left and an American was still leading the charge, only it wasn't O'Dwyer but Melanie Weisner with 368,200 chips.

Weisner started the day with 78,900 chips and slowly grinded her way into contention, always remaining just behind the front runners until deep into the last level. Then Weisner found herself on the right side of a 100,000 pot against Lars Damgaard Hansen that catapulted her into the lead. Not a bad few days for the woman who spent last night dining in the world's top rated restaurant Noma.

Weisner opened the action with a 3,500 bet and there were two callers in the shape of Johan Roosen and Lars Damgaard Hansen. The flop was {J-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} and Hansen checked to Weisner who bet 6,400 and only Hansen made the call. On the turn the pair shared the {10-Hearts} and Hansen check-called a 12,500 Weisner bet. Then on the river we saw the {4-Clubs} and Hansen took the betting lead for 18,900. Weisner looked down to check she still had the nuts {K-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} before raising it up to 58,700 and Hansen called (he later told Weisner he flopped two pair).

Despite securing the chip lead it certainly wasn't the Melanie Weisner Show, with the chip lead changing hands more times than a baton in a 100m sprint relay. Simon Ravnsbaek, Lauri Varonen, Aage Ravn, Keld Volqyardsen and Michael Tureniec all taking turns to lead the days festivities.

Other notables who had chips to place into a plastic bag at the end of the day included Team PokerStars Pros Pierre Neuville (221,300), Luca Pagano (59,000), Johnny Lodden (41,100), Martin Staszko (27,900) and Team PokerStars Pro Online Mickey Petersen (82,200). Day 1a chip leader Steve O'Dwyer ended the day with 122,000, day 1b chip leader Mads Wissing ending with 119,300 and reigning EPT Copenhagen champion Michael Tureniec ending with 214,500 chips.

Day 3 starts on Thursday at 12.00 (CET) where we will breach our money bubble with the top 48 players receiving a pay cheque. Make sure you join us at Pokernews for all of the very best action.

O'Dwyer on a Free-Roll, Chops

Steve O'Dwyer was on a free-roll to double back up to a chip leading stack, but the pot ended in a split pot. There had been a lot of action between him and Niels van Alphen pre flop before O'Dwyer led out for 24,000 on the {7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{6-Clubs} flop.

Van Alphen called to see the {6-Diamonds} turn where he snap shoved when O'Dwyer checked to him. O'Dwyer took a few seconds and called all-in with {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}. The Dutchman laughed and opened {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs} for the same hand. O'Dwyer had flush outs but the river came {3-Clubs} to end the hand in a climax.

Nielsen Has Aces Cracked In Battle of the Blinds

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante

Playing out of the blinds is always a tricky affair but your decisions are usually made easier when you pick up pocket aces there, especially when you are in the big blind and your small blind opponent has opened with a raise, like just happened to Martin Nielsen.

As mentioned, the action folded around to Konstantinos Christou in the small blind and he raised to 3,500. Nielsen check his cards before three-betting to 8,600. Christou paused for 20-30 second before making the call.

The dealer burned a card before fanning out the {9-Spades}{K-Hearts}{2-Hearts} flop. Christou checked to his opponent who bet 9,300. Christou announced he was all in for around 35,000 but he cannot have been happy when Nielsen snap-called him.

Christou: {K-Spades}{8-Diamonds}
Nielsen: {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds}

Nielsen was way ahead both preflop and on the flop but when the {K-Clubs} hit the turn that completely changed and he was now drawing to the two remaining aces. The river was the {3-Clubs} and with that Nielsen was cleft with just 3,600 chips

Back Step For Ravn

There was some pre flop confusion after Henrik Jeppsson had made an under raise and Jacob Rasmussen had then three-bet . In the end it was sorted out and Jeppsson had to raise to 3,200 and Rasmussen's three-bet for 6,600 stood. Aage Floenes Ravn was in the big blind and he made the call, as did Jeppsson.

Flop: {K-Spades} {K-Clubs} {Q-Diamonds}

The action checked to Rasmussen and he bet 9,400. Only Ravn made the call and the pair of them went to the turn.

Turn: {4-Clubs}

Ravn check-called a very quick 17,400 Rasmussen double barrel.

River: {10-Spades}

Ravn once again checked, and this time Rasmussen bet 37,000. Ravn counted out the bet, stared at Rasmussen for a while, and then made the call.

Rassmussen turned over {A-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} and Ravn mucked his hand unseen.
