Dan Smith Crushes Day 2; Leads Stacked Final Table

Level 16 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Dan Smith
Dan Smith

Season 9 of the European Poker Tour continued today with Day 2 of the 2012 PokerStars.com EPT Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller. It took just eight levels of play, but eventually the final table was reached with Dan Smith and his stack of 5.108 million leading the way.

At the start of Day 2, six Day 1 eliminations opted to rebuy — Daniel Negreanu, Sorel Mizzi, Phil Ivey, Ilya Bulychev, Philipp Gruissem and Jonathan Duhamel. In addition, Chris Moorman, who didn’t play on Day 1, chose to wait until the start of Day 2 to jump into the action. Each of these players started with a stack of 250,000, which was about a fifth of chip leader Steve O’Dwyer’s 1.249 million.

All told, 55 players accounted for nine reloads and created a prize pool of €3,072,960. The top eight players would be paid, with the lion’s share of €1,075,500 reserved for the winner. Along with the prize money, the winner shall receive a beautiful Shamballa bracelet.

The eliminations came fast and furious with more than a dozen players falling in the first two levels. Terje “Terken89” Augdal was the first to go, followed closely by Cheung Yin Sun, the lone lady in the field. From there, Andrew Lichtenberger, Timothy Adams, Igor Kurganov, Vladimir Troyanovskiy, Steve Silverman, Andy Moseley and [Removed:283] joined them on the rail.

Likewise, the decision to rebuy didn’t pan out for many of the players. Mizzi, Ivey, Gruissem and Negreanu all fell early, as did Duhamel, who found out the hard way that three times is not the charm.

Over the course of the next few hours, Moorman, Bulychev, Justin Bonomo, Ziv Bachar, Masa Kagawa, Eugene Katchalov, Jason Mercier, Juha Helppi, Sami Kelopuro, Scott Seiver and Vadzim Kursevich all hit the rail. It was around this time that Smith won a massive pot, one that exemplified just how well he was running.

It happened at the main feature table when JC Alvarado opened from an early position with a raise to 45,000. Smith called from the cutoff, as did Tobias Reinkemeier from the big blind, and it was three-way action to the {j-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} {J-Clubs} flop. Both Reinkemeier and Alvarado checked, but Smith opted to fire out 85,000. Reinkemeier called, Alvarado folded, and the {6-Spades} appeared on the turn. Reinkemeier check-called a bet of 181,000, and then checked the {K-Hearts} river. Smith went in with another 384,000, the German moved all in, and Smith snap-called. Reinkemeier opened {J-Spades} {9-Spades} for jacks full of nines, but Smith had even better as his {K-} {J-} got their on the river. With that, Smith chipped up to over five million while a shell-shocked Reinkemeier exited the tournament.

O’Dwyer exited in 13th place after being stuck in reverse most of the day, while Ignat “0Human0” Liviu, Anatoly Gurtovoy, John Juanda, O’Dwyer, Peter Jetten, and Artem Litvinov all kept him company on the rail.

Litvinov proved to be the tournament bubble boy, falling in ninth place to Smith after his {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts} couldn't improve past the chip leader's {A-Diamonds}{K-Spades}. From there, just eight remained to return tomorrow and here’s a look how they'll stack up:

McDonald Busts Juanda

Juanda is gone
Juanda is gone

From the button, John Juanda raised to 57,000. Mike "Timex" McDonald was in the big blind and three-bet to 144,000 when play got over to him. With action back on Juanda, he took a minute and then announced that he was all in — a total bet worth about 850,000. McDonald made the call.

McDonald turned up the {J-Diamonds}{J-Spades} and had Juanda's {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} in bad shape.

On the flop, the dealer spread the {Q-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{4-Spades} and McDonald maintained his lead. The turn was the {9-Diamonds} and the river finished the board with the {4-Hearts}. Juanda had missed and was left with nothing but the felt in front of him.

McDonald went to extend his hand to Juanda, as he has been doing every time he has eliminated someone, but this time he didn't get the return reach. In Juanda's defense, it looked as though he had already turned his head away to get up out of his seat and simply didn't see McDonald. Either way, it didn't phase McDonald and he went back to stacking up his chips to move to 4.6 million.

O'Dwyer Done and Dusted

Steve O'Dwyer on Day 1.
Steve O'Dwyer on Day 1.

Steve O'Dwyer began the day as the big chip leader after rebuying on Day 1, but he was unable to carryover his momentum to Day 2; in fact, the Communications graduate from Pennsylvania, who has finished runner-up in the EPT London Main Event and in the EPT Campione €10,000 event, was stuck in reverse the entire day.

In a recent hand, action folded around to O'Dwyer on the button and he moved all in for a little over 300K. Artem Litvinov was in the big blind and opted to call off for 273K.

Showdown
Litvinov: {A-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}
O'Dwyer: {10-}{10-}

The {9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{Q-Spades} flop was kind to O'Dwyer, so much so that Litvinov got up and prepared to leave. The dealer then burned and turned the {A-Hearts}. "Ace?" Litvinov asked with renewed hope. Sure enough, the bullet gave him the lead, while the {6-Hearts} river gave him the double.

Left with just 45,000, O'Dwyer shoved when action folded to him in the cutoff on the very next hand. JC Alvarado isolated on the button, both blinds folded, and the cards were turned up:

Showdown
Alvarado: {7-}{7-}
O'Dwyer: {A-Spades}{4-Hearts}

This time it was O'Dwyer who was looking for an ace, but he would be left wanting as the board ran out an uneventful {9-Diamonds}{J-Spades}{10-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}. With that, the start-of-the-day chip leader was sent home shy of the money in 13th place.

"0Human0" Eliminated By the Alvarado's Aces

Ignat Liviu
Ignat Liviu

Ignat "0Human0" Liviu, who was recently featured in PokerNews' Online Chat Series, raised to 40,000 from the hijack and received a call from Steve O'Dwyer in the cutoff. JC Alvarado then three-bet to 120,000 from the button, and after thinking for a few moments, Liviu moved all in for 570,000 total. O'Dwyer quickly got out of the way, but Alvarado snap-called.

Showdown
Liviu: {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}
Alvarado: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}

It was a bad spot for the online sensation, and the {3-Spades}{4-Spades}{7-Spades} flop was no help; in fact, it gave Alvarado the nut-flush draw, so a spade on the turn would end it. Sure enough, the {K-Spades} peeled off and Liviu was up out of his seat, graciously shaking hands with his opponents, before taking his leave in 16th place.

Ravnsbaek Four-Flushed Down the Drain; Kagawa Gone

Simon Ravnsbaek on Day 1
Simon Ravnsbaek on Day 1

We saw an open seat over at the feature table and inquired as to what happened. According to the announcer, Simon Ravnsbaek and Dan Smith, both of who held big stacks, got it in with the same hand--{A-}{K-}.

Well, as we've said before, Smith has been running well all day, and this hand would be no different. You see, Smith held the {A-Spades} and the board ran out with four spades of its own, giving him a flush and the massive pot. On the flip side, Ravnsbaek was eliminated in a gut-wrenching hand.

Meanwhile, Masa Kagawa was eliminated at the hands of Tobias Reinkemeier over at one of the outer tables.

Third Time is Not the Charm for Duhamel

Jonathan Duhamel on Day 1.
Jonathan Duhamel on Day 1.

It has been a rough tournament for Jonathan Duhamel, who bought in twice and busted on Day 1. The Team PokerStars Pro decided to give it another go at the start of Day 2, but his run would last just shy of two levels.

In one of the last hands before the break, action folded to Vadzim Kursevich on the button and he raised to 17,000. Duhamel was next to act in the small blind and three-bet to 44,000, which prompted Kursevich to move all in. Duhamel called off for around 360,000 and the cards were turned up.

Showdown
Kursevich: {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}
Duhamel: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}

The young Canadian was in great shape to double, though the {10-}{7-}{6-} flop did give his opponent a gut-shot straight draw. The {2-Hearts} turn put two hearts on the board to give Duhamel blockers, which made it all the more heartbreaking when an offsuit {8-} spiked on the river to eliminate Duhamel for the third and final time.

Ivey Eliminated for a Second Time by [Removed:288]

Level 10 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Phil Ivey on Day 1.
Phil Ivey on Day 1.

Yesterday, Phil Ivey had his aces cracked by the two pair of [Removed:283] to put an end to his first buy-in. Ivey waited until the start of Day 2 to give it another try, but unfortunately for him he'd run into [Removed:288] once again.

According to Jason Mercier, who was kind enough to fill us in on the details, action folded to [Removed:288] in the small blind and he opened for 16,000. Ivey was in the big blind and opted to ship for around 260,000, which [Removed:288] called with {K-}{K-}. Ivey held the inferior {5-}{5-} and was in need of some help. The {7-}{4-}{2-} flop put out some runner-runner options, but the {7-} turn took them away. The river was of no consequence, and [Removed:288] eliminated Ivey for a second time.

Negreanu Falls at the Feature Table

Daniel Negreanu on Day 1.
Daniel Negreanu on Day 1.

Daniel Negreanu's Day 2 didn't go much better than it did yesterday. Over at the feature table, "Kid Poker" managed to get his stack all in preflop with {J-}{J-} only to find himself up against the {A-}{A-} of Dan Smith. The board would run out clean for Smith, who continued to roll in the early levels by chipping up to 1.7 million.

Meanwhile, Negreanu made a quiet exit from the tournament floor--€100,000 poorer.

Lichtenberger Not So Lucky in Three-Way All-In Pot

Andrew Lichtenberger
Andrew Lichtenberger

We just witness a three-way all-in pot that saw a short-stacked Philipp Gruissem get his last 32,000 in with {K-Diamonds}{J-Spades} and Andrew Lichtenberger, who had 141,000, do the same with {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}. Unfortunately for them both, Artem Litvinov had them both covered and at risk with {Q-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}.

The cameras swarmed the table as the dealer put down the flop . . . {2-Hearts}{K-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. Gruissem spiked his card to take the lead, though Litvinov was still out in front for the larger side pot. Neither the {4-Diamonds} turn nor {7-Clubs} river changed a thing, and Gruissem tripled while Lichtenberger was felled by Litvinov.
