Dan Smith Crushes Day 2; Leads Stacked Final Table

Season 9 of the European Poker Tour continued today with Day 2 of the 2012 PokerStars.com EPT Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller. It took just eight levels of play, but eventually the final table was reached with Dan Smith and his stack of 5.108 million leading the way.
At the start of Day 2, six Day 1 eliminations opted to rebuy — Daniel Negreanu, Sorel Mizzi, Phil Ivey, Ilya Bulychev, Philipp Gruissem and Jonathan Duhamel. In addition, Chris Moorman, who didn’t play on Day 1, chose to wait until the start of Day 2 to jump into the action. Each of these players started with a stack of 250,000, which was about a fifth of chip leader Steve O’Dwyer’s 1.249 million.
All told, 55 players accounted for nine reloads and created a prize pool of €3,072,960. The top eight players would be paid, with the lion’s share of €1,075,500 reserved for the winner. Along with the prize money, the winner shall receive a beautiful Shamballa bracelet.
The eliminations came fast and furious with more than a dozen players falling in the first two levels. Terje “Terken89” Augdal was the first to go, followed closely by Cheung Yin Sun, the lone lady in the field. From there, Andrew Lichtenberger, Timothy Adams, Igor Kurganov, Vladimir Troyanovskiy, Steve Silverman, Andy Moseley and [Removed:283] joined them on the rail.
Likewise, the decision to rebuy didn’t pan out for many of the players. Mizzi, Ivey, Gruissem and Negreanu all fell early, as did Duhamel, who found out the hard way that three times is not the charm.
Over the course of the next few hours, Moorman, Bulychev, Justin Bonomo, Ziv Bachar, Masa Kagawa, Eugene Katchalov, Jason Mercier, Juha Helppi, Sami Kelopuro, Scott Seiver and Vadzim Kursevich all hit the rail. It was around this time that Smith won a massive pot, one that exemplified just how well he was running.
It happened at the main feature table when JC Alvarado opened from an early position with a raise to 45,000. Smith called from the cutoff, as did Tobias Reinkemeier from the big blind, and it was three-way action to the 
flop. Both Reinkemeier and Alvarado checked, but Smith opted to fire out 85,000. Reinkemeier called, Alvarado folded, and the 
appeared on the turn. Reinkemeier check-called a bet of 181,000, and then checked the 
river. Smith went in with another 384,000, the German moved all in, and Smith snap-called. Reinkemeier opened 
for jacks full of nines, but Smith had even better as his 
got their on the river. With that, Smith chipped up to over five million while a shell-shocked Reinkemeier exited the tournament.
O’Dwyer exited in 13th place after being stuck in reverse most of the day, while Ignat “0Human0” Liviu, Anatoly Gurtovoy, John Juanda, O’Dwyer, Peter Jetten, and Artem Litvinov all kept him company on the rail.
Litvinov proved to be the tournament bubble boy, falling in ninth place to Smith after his 
couldn't improve past the chip leader's

Litvinov Bubbles €50,000 Super High Roller
The shortest stack coming into the "unofficial" final table of nine was Artem Litvinov. With the blinds at 15,000/30,000/4,000, Litvinov began play after the redraw with 194,000 in chips.
A few hands after the cards were back in the air, Dan Smith opened from middle position to 65,000. Litvinov was in the next seat and moved all in for 159,000. Everyone folded back to Smith and he made the quick, cheap call.
Smith turned over the and was dominating the for the at-risk Litvinov.
The flop came down 
and Litvinov added a couple of extra outs as he could now chop with Smith. The turn brought the 
, leaving Litvinov in need of a ten to win the hand and double or a queen or three to chop.
The dealer burned one last time and then dealt the 
on the river. That wasn't what Litvinov was looking for and he was eliminated as the official bubble boy of the 2012 PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller.

Jetten Jettisoned by Alavarado's Aces
Peter Jetten raised to 65,000 under the gun and cleared the field all the way around to JC Alvarado in the big blind. The latter pushed back with a three-bet to 280,000, and Jetten ended up getting his stack in the pot.

It was the worst of spots for Jetten, and while the 
flop gave him two pair, it also gave Alvarado a set. Jetten needed runner-runner to stay alive, but it was not meant to be as the 
peeled off on the turn. The meaningless was put out on the river, Jetten exited in 10th place, and play was halted for the final nine players to redraw to the unofficial final table.

Action folded to Ilari Sahamies in the small blind and he moved all in for 294,000. Artem Litvinov, who didn't have too much more, was in the big blind and made the call.

, the only two players left in the hand, Ilari Sahamies in the big blind and Mike Watson on the button checked and the dealer opened the

Ilari decided to add some value to the pot by betting 70,000 and Watson chipped in with a call. The river card was and both players checked again.

McDonald Busts Juanda
From the button, John Juanda raised to 57,000. Mike "Timex" McDonald was in the big blind and three-bet to 144,000 when play got over to him. With action back on Juanda, he took a minute and then announced that he was all in — a total bet worth about 850,000. McDonald made the call.
McDonald turned up the and had Juanda's in bad shape.
On the flop, the dealer spread the 
and McDonald maintained his lead. The turn was the 
and the river finished the board with the . Juanda had missed and was left with nothing but the felt in front of him.
McDonald went to extend his hand to Juanda, as he has been doing every time he has eliminated someone, but this time he didn't get the return reach. In Juanda's defense, it looked as though he had already turned his head away to get up out of his seat and simply didn't see McDonald. Either way, it didn't phase McDonald and he went back to stacking up his chips to move to 4.6 million.
