Sarwer's Call and Bevand's Double

Manuel Bevand
Manuel Bevand

Prior to the break, Diego Gomez Gonzalez opened to 34,000 in early position, Manuel Bevand called in the cutoff, and Jeff Sarwer defended his big blind. The flop fell {10-Hearts}{3-Spades}{9-Clubs}, and all three players checked.

The turn was the {7-Hearts}, Sarwer led out for 38,000, Gonzalez folded, and Bevand raised to 90,000. Sarwer tank-called.

The river was the {5-Clubs}, and Sarwer slowed down, checking to Bevand, The Frenchman thought for a bit, then fired 165,000.

"Sick," Sarwer said the second the chips hit the felt.

He ripped off his sunglasses to study both Bevand and the board, and he tanked for a brief time before calling. Bevand turned over {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts} for busted flush and straight draws, and Sarwer tabled {a-Spades}{10-Diamonds} for a pair of tens.

A few hands later, the trio found themselves involved in another raised pot, this time with the board reading {8-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{9-Clubs}. Sarwer checked, Gonzalez fired 36,000, and Bevand moved all in for 338,000. Sarwer looked pained, and eventually folded, but Gonzalez made the call.

Gonzalez: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Bevand: {q-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Once called, Bevand slammed his hand onto the felt with great force. His enthusiasm wained a bit as the {j-Hearts} turned, giving Gonzalez outs to eliminate him, but the {2-Hearts} fell on the river.

Bevand more than doubled with a queen-high flush, while Gonzalez slipped to about 678,000 chips.

The Joy of Being Suited

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante

Weaker players are often berated for playing any two suited cards, but having two hole cards of the same suit can sometimes pay dividends — just ask Jorma Nuutinen.

The action folded to Ramzi Jelassi in late position and he opened to 40,000. Nuutinen was next to act and he moved all-in, forcing the other players from the pot. Jelassi asked for an official count and when he was told 143,000, Jelassi called.

Jelassi: {A-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Nuutinen: {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

The {J-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{A-Clubs} flop improved both player to two pair, but the same two pair and a split pot was on the cards. Or was it? The {9-Diamonds} turn gifted a flush draw to Nuutinen, a flush draw that came in with the arrival of the {6-Diamonds} on the river. Ouch!

Romanello Double Chances Looking Slim

Roberto Romanello is close to busting after running jacks into the kings of Mikhail Petrov.

Mark Herm opened to 45,000 from early position before Petrov three-bet to 87,000 from the cut-off and Romanello four-bet all in from the big blind. Herm folded and Petrov called in a flash.

Romanello: {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}
Petrov: {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

The board ran {q-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. The Welshman flopped a flush draw but saw the board brick out.

The very next hand Romanello took the blinds and antes after he shoved from the big blind.

Tau of Busting

Enrico Tau has been eliminated from the EPT Prague Main Event after a mis-timed all-in three-bet against David Boyaciyan.

Boyaciyan opened to 44,000 under the gun and the players folded one-by-one around the Tau in the big blind. Tau checked his hole cards, composed himself and three-bet all-in. Boyaciyan instantly called.

Tau: {Q-Hearts}{J-Hearts}
Boyaciyan: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

Neither player improved on the {8-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{9-Spades}{5-Spades}{6-Spades} board, Boyaciyan's ace-king kicker winning him the hand and busting Tau.

The Long Shot Comes Through For Gonzalez

After Diego Gomez Gonzalez had raised, Aleh Plauski three-bet to 100,000. Gonzalez made the call and then proceeded to check the {10-Hearts}{A-Spades}{J-Spades} flop. Plauski obliged with another bet of 100,000, and Gonzalez responded by moving all in for around 500,000. Plauski called and the cards were turned on their backs.

Showdown
Plauski: {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Gonzalez: {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

Both players had flopped two pair, and according the PokerNews Odds Calculator, there was a 95.45% chance of the pot being split; in fact, the only way it wouldn't be is if it came runner-runner spades.

Interestingly the {2-Spades} turn made that a real possibility, and increased Gonzalez's chances of winning up to 20.45%. Wouldn't you know it, the long shot came though as the {4-Spades} spiked on the river.

Gonzalez let out a shout in celebration, while Plauski sat there in disbelief.

Boyaciyan Seeks To Best Last Year's 2nd-Place Finish; Eliminates Bevand

Last year, David Boyaciyan navigated the field of 722 players to finish as runner-up to Martin Finger in this event, and remarkably he's making another deep run in the Main Event.

In a recent hand, Manuel Bevand opened with a raise only to have Boyaciyan three-bet to 88,000 from the small blind. After the big blind got out of the way, Bevand four-bet to 155,000, Boyaciyan five-bet 380,000, and Bevand six-bet shoved for around 700,000. Boyaciyan snap-called and Bevand discovered the bad news.

Showdown
Bevand: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Boyaciyan: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}

Bevand was literally left shaking his head and watched helplessly as the board ran out {K-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}. With that, the field is down to 22 players, which means just one more must go before calling it a night.
