Eight Remain, Seven Get Paid; Schemion Leads The Final Table

Level 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Ole Schemion - Chip Leader
Ole Schemion - Chip Leader

It was an exciting day of poker here at the Casino Barcelona as the European Poker Tour Season 10 Barcelona Super High Roller played through its second day of play. This event turned out a total of 40 unique players with 11 re-entries which added up to 51 total entrants and a prize pool of €2,448,765. This structure was designed for the top seven players to cash and at the end of 18 levels only eight remain. At the end of the day it was Ole Schemion who led the final seven with a stack of 2,835,000.

When the players return for Day 3 they will be on the money bubble. If a player is able to survive this journey into the final seven, he will be guaranteed a payday of at least €128,515. While that would no doubt be a sweet cash, each player is instead eyeing up the top prize of €771,300 and the title of EPT champion. While Schemion leads the final seven, the table remains stacked with the likes of Timothy Adams, Steve O'Dwyer, Mike McDonald, Erik Seidel, Fabian Quoss, David Benefield, and Vitaly Lunkin.

6Ole Schemion2,835,000
7David Benefield1,020,000
8Vitaly Lunkin2,470,000

With poker's elite gathered around the same tables in the same room it was no doubt to anyone that sparks would fly early and this is exactly what occurred. Names began dropping from the field at a quick rate, ending the dreams of victory held by players like Steven Silverman, Max Lehmanski, Andrew Lichtenberger, Marc-Andre Ladouceur, Jonathan Duhamel, and reigning champion Dan Smith. Team PokerStars also had a fair showing with pros Daniel Negreanu and Jason Mercier both making deep runs. Negreanu fell in eleventh place while Mercier was next out of the door in tenth.

Schemion won a huge pot toward the start of the day when he woke up with pocket kings against Daniel Alaei's ace-king to eliminate Alaei from play. From there, Schemion continued his domination by consistently winning both small pots and big pots alike. Our Live Reporting team caught a particularly interesting hand involving Schemion and Steve O'Dwyer where Schemion three-barreled into O'Dwyer and showed one of his hole cards after O'Dwyer folded the river.

Lunkin became one of the big stacks about halfway through the day. His rush began during a confrontation with Philip Sternheimer when the two were seated together at the feature table. At 5,000/10,000/1,000, Sternheimer opened with a raise to 22,000. Lunkin popped it up with a three-bet to 56,000 from the button and it came back to Sternheimer who four-bet to 132,000. Lunkin went into the tank before moving out a huge five-bet to 656,000 which was almost enough to cover Sternheimer. Sternheimer thought for a moment before flat calling the bet. There was a bit of confusion in the moment over how much the bet was and Sternheimer ended up moving all in in the dark with Lunkin quickly calling. The hands were turned over before the flop to show Sternheimer crushing Lunkin:

Sterinheimer: {K-Clubs}{K-Spades}
Lunkin: {Q-Spades}{Q-Hearts}

Lunkin made a remark regarding the possibility of a slowroll by Sternheimer, and just like that the poker gods responded to Lunkin by awarding him with quads through a flop of {9-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs}. A dejected Sternheimer immediately stood up from the table and threw on his jacket as the board finished with the {9-Diamonds} and the {6-Spades}. Lunkin was able to secure the knockout and significantly boost his stack. Then, just a few hands later, Lunkin was able to score another knockout when he flopped top pair against Martin Jacobson. Eventually, Lunkin finished as the second biggest stack of the day.

As play wound down in the evening, the unofficial final table of nine was reached. After a grueling few levels of nine-handed play where short stacks became big stacks and vice versa, the final table bubble was burst when Stern found himself in a confrontation with Adams. Stern shoved in his stack of just under ten big blinds before the flop with {A-Hearts}{q-Spades} but was dominated by Adams' {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}. A board of {10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} ensured that Adams' kings would hold and Stern would fall in ninth place.

Play resumes on Sunday at 1:00 CET and our reporting will begin at 2:00 off of the live stream. Be sure to join us as we document the quest to crown the Super High Roller champion here in Barcelona!

Dani Stern
Dani Stern

Dani Stern shipped all in from the hijack for his last 475,000 and was called by Timothy Adams.

Adams: {K-Spades}{k-Clubs}
Stern: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}

The board ran out {10-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} and Stern, who began this final table as one of the top stacks, was eliminated in 9th place. With Stern's elimination, the field is now on the money bubble.

Negreanu Fails to Make Dinner

Level 15 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

In the last hand before the dinner break, a short-stacked Daniel Negreanu moved all in from early position for his last 310,000. Action folded to Erik Seidel in the small blind and the Poker Hall of Famer thought for about ten second before making the call. Vitaly Lunkin folded from the big and the cards were turned up.

Negreanu: {a-Hearts}{2-Clubs}
Seidel: {a-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Negreanu began to vent about he was tired of seeing ace-rag and wasn't about to fold an ace short stacked just before the dinner break. Just when it seemed he was resigned to his fate, Negreanu perked up when the flop came down {j-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts}.

"Hearts," an excited Negreanu said as he picked up the nut-flush draw. He was all smiles as he requested a heart from the dealer, who did not oblige with the {4-Spades} turn. It was down to the river for "Kid Poker," and he would come up empty as the {7-Spades} blanked.

Negreanu fell in eleventh place and failed to make the Day 2 dinner break by one hand.

Start-of-the-Day Chip Leader Eliminated

Level 15 : 12,000/24,000, 3,000 ante
Sandor Demjan
Sandor Demjan

Sandor Demjan began the day as a big chip leader, but he has fallen short of the final table here in the EPT Barcelona €50,000 Super High Roller.

His demise came when he opened for 65,000 from early position only to have Dani Stern three-bet to 115,000 from the cutoff. Action folded back to the Hungarian and he called to see a flop of {q-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{k-Clubs}. Demjan then used both hands to shove in his remaining 426,000, and despite looking a bit disappointed with the turn of events, Stern made the call.

Stern: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}
Demjan: {q-Spades}{10-Spades}

Stern was ahead with his aces but Demjan had flopped middle pair with an open-ended straight draw. Both players sat quietly as the dealer burned and turned the {J-Diamonds}, which was a blank as far as Demjan was concerned. The {2-Diamonds} river was no better and just like that Demjan was bounced from the tournament in 12th place.

Seidel Doubles Through Stern

Level 14 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Erik Seidel Doubles
Erik Seidel Doubles

Erik Seidel opened with a min-raise from early position and it folded to Dani Stern who set Seidel all in from the big blind. Seidel announced a call and tabled {A-Spades}{A-Diamonds} which was crushing Stern's {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}.

The dealer rapped the table and fanned the most dramatic flop possible with {Q-Spades}{10-Spades}{A-Clubs}. Seidel flopped top set of aces but turned out to have the second best hand behind Stern's Broadway straight. Seidel was now looking to make quads or to pair the board in order to give himself a full house to stay alive in this tournament.

The {3-Spades} turn gave Seidel even more outs as he could now catch a spade on the river to stay alive with a flush. The river brought just that with the {J-Spades}, giving Seidel the flush and allowing him to double to 934,000.

The Lunkin Run Good Continues Much to Gruissem's Dismay

Level 13 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Philipp Gruissem
Philipp Gruissem

There's no two ways about it... Vitaly Lunkin has been on fire the last few levels. That run good continued in a big hand at the feature table that resulted in the elimination of Philipp Gruissem.

It began when Lunkin opened for 32,000 from middle position and Gruissem defended from the big blind. The {10-Spades}{6-Clubs}{7-Clubs} flop saw Gruissem check-call a bet of 35,000 before he turned right around and led out for 60,000 on the {8-Clubs} turn.

Lunkin made the call, the {7-Spades} completed the board on the river and Gruissem bet 110,000. Lunkin snap-shoved and Gruissem seemed taken aback.

"It might be a slow roll," Gruissem said aloud as he began to talk about the hand. Eventually he called off for 276,000 more and tabled the {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a full house. Unfortunately for him, Lunkin had a better one with the {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. Gruissem, who fired just one bullet in this tournament, seemed a bit shock but soon collected himself and exited the tournament.

Better Call, Salman

Level 12 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Salman Behbehani
Salman Behbehani

Action folded around to a big-stacked Dani Stern in the small blind and he opted to move all in to put the pressure on Salman Behbehani, who had 150,000 or so behind. Behbehani looked down at his cards and liked what he saw as he immediately called off.

Behbehani: {a-Spades}{j-Clubs}
Stern: {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

Behbehani was well out in front and he was all smiles. The {9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{2-Diamonds} gave him pause as Stern flopped a flush draw, and Behbehani must not have been confident as he was up out of his seat. No sooner did he stand up than the dealer burned and turned the {K-Diamonds}. Stern hit his flush to leave Behbehani drawing dead.

The meaningless {K-Clubs} was put out on the river and Behbehani exited the tournament floor and brought about the two-table redraw.

Germans Collide

Level 12 : 6,000/12,000, 2,000 ante
Martin Finger
Martin Finger

Fabian Quoss opened for 27,000 under the gun only to have Martin Finger three-bet all in for 200,000 from the button. The blinds both folded and Quoss made a quick call.

Quoss: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Finger: {k-Spades}{j-Hearts}

Quoss was ahead, but Finger was drawing to two live cards. The latter German seemed hopeful, but not after the {6-Spades}{a-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop paired Quoss' ace. Finger needed runner-runner to stay alive, but the {2-Diamonds} turn took away any chance of that happening.

Finger was drawing dead, and after the {J-Diamonds} was run out on the river for good measure, he exited the tournament area in 18th place.

Mercier Eliminates the Defending Champ

Level 11 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Dan Smith
Dan Smith

Dan Smith, who won this very event last year for €962,925, has been nursing an extreme short stack for the better part of two levels, but his time just ran out.

It happened after Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier opened with a raise from the cutoff and Smith shoved from the button for 42,000. The blinds folded and Mercier made the call.

Mercier: {j-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Smith: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}

Smith got it in good, but Mercier was drawing to two live cards. He hit one of them on the {9-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{6-Hearts} flop and left Smith in need of either a king or an ace. The {2-Spades} turn wasn't what he was looking for, and neither was the {2-Diamonds}. Smith failed to catch and was bounced from the tournament in 25th place.

Meanwhile, Vladimir Troyanovskiy was eliminated at one of the outer tables.

Jensen Coolered by Watson

Level 10 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Frederik Jensen
Frederik Jensen

In the last hand before the break, a big hand developed over at the feature table between Mike Watson and Frederik Jensen. We missed the early action, but we do know a {9-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop saw action explode and resulted in Jensen being all in for 416,000.

Jensen: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Watson: {j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}

Watson had flopped a straight, but Jensen was drawing very live with an open-ended straight and flush draws, which he'd hit 45% of the time. Any heart or king would give Jensen the win, and he could still chop with an eight. With 928,000 in the pot, the dealer burned and turned the {4-Spades}. It was a blank as far as Jensen was concerned.

It was down to the river for Jensen, who sat silently with his eyes fixed on the board. The dealer burned once again and put out the {6-Diamonds}. It was red, but it was not a heart. Clearly dejected, Jensen exited the tournament stage while the rest of the table went on break.
