Day 1b Completed

David Ostrom On Top at PokerStars.fr EPT Deauville

As the world began another work week, it was a busy Monday as well at the Casino Barrière where Day 1b of the PokerStars.fr EPT Deauville Main Event played out. A total of 475 players arrived to play the second of the event's two Day 1 flights — more than the 307 who played Sunday — with Swedish player David Ostrom ending the night having made the most of his day at the office, gathering an tourney-leading stack of 212,600 chips to begin play tomorrow.

There were quite a few familiar faces among today's field, although not all were fortunate enough to survive the day with chips. Those seeing their Main Event runs end prematurely on Monday included Davidi Kitai, Dominik Nitsche, Ludovic Lacay, Alex Kravchenko, Luke Schwartz, Vicky Coren, Fatima Moreira de Melo, Toni Judet, and Pierre Neuville.

Neuville made a play for most painful exit earlier today after getting nearly all of his stack in the middle with {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} versus Joseph Jazzar's {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs} following a {J-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} flop. But the turn and river came {9-Hearts} and {Q-Spades} to give Jazzar a runner-runner straight, crippling "Zoutechamp" who would be eliminated on the next hand.

James Akenhead would later earn at least equal amounts of pity following his elimination. Like Neuville, Akenhead lost almost his entire stack in a hand in which he too held {A-Diamonds}{A-Spades} and appeared at a great advantage, in this case up against last year's EPT Deauville Main Event runner-up Paul Guichard's {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}. But the flop came {6-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{K-Spades} to give Guichard trips, and when the lone remaining ace failed to come Akenhead was nearly felted and would be knocked out but two hands later.

And Liv Boeree earned some merit points as well for having persevered despite a bout of food poisoning to survive most of the day before being eliminated. She then watched her boyfriend Kevin MacPhee almost immediately join her on the rail after running {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts} into Jean Pierre Petroli's {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and failing to receive any help from the community cards.

Meanwhile as the workday progressed it was [Removed:4], Paul Guichard, Phillipe Boucher, Casey Kastle, and finally Ostrom each taking turns at the top of the leader board. Ostrom's big rise came late in the day, with a set-over-set hand proving key in his push past everyone and into first position.

Others earning a handsome hourly wage in chips today included Ahmed Abd El Fatah, Karim Abdelmoumene, Andrey Baturin, Vadzim Markushevski, Nicolas Levi, and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier.

All told 419 players will be back in action for tomorrow’s Day 2, still more than half of the overall starting field of 782. From those just 120 will be receiving paychecks for their efforts at the EPT Deauville Main Event, with the player finishing the week on top earning the biggest cut of €770,000 from the tourney's €3,753,600 prize pool.

But now isn't the time to be thinking too far ahead. As already suggested, much work is left to be done.

We'll be here working as well starting tomorrow at noon to bring you all of the action from the EPT Deauville Main Event. Until then, au revoir!

Korenev Adds to His Stack

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Roman Korenev has just four-bet Steve O'Dwyer right at the death here in Deauville to add an extra 5,000 or so chips to his stack.

Korenev opened the betting with a raise to 1,200 from early position and it was a raise that received plenty of respect as the players folded all the way around to O'Dwyer in the small blind. O'Dwyer stared at Korenev before three-betting to 3,900. Aubin Cazals folded his big blind and the action was back on Korenev.

After 30-seconds Korenev four-bet to 9,400 and O'Dwyer relinquished his hand, though his face remained expressionless.

The 200k man

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante

Philippe Boucher has become the first player at EPT Deauville to break the 200,000-chip barrier.

He opened the pot from mid position and was called in one spot before the colourful character of Johan Guilbert squeezed to 2,875 from the cut-off. Boucher stared him down and put in a chunky four-bet to 8,000. The player sandwiched between them folded and Guilbert called.

The flop was revealed as {2-Clubs}{8-Spades}{k-Diamonds} and both players checked. The turn was dealt as {6-Clubs} and Boucher bet 8,000.

Guilbert sat there behind the ski goggles he's wearing and tanked. Sometimes a man needs to free himself and think without the restraint of goggles though. Guilbert must've agreed and he took them off to reveal a pair of sunglasses underneath! Time was passing by and Guilbert must've known that as he does wear two watches. Eventually he open-folded {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} and said to himself, "Good fold, Johan!"

Boeree, MacPhee Bust Almost Simultaneously

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Today it's mostly been Liv and let die.
Today it's mostly been Liv and let die.

Liv Boeree has hadn't the best of days, what with battling food poisoning as well as a fairly crazy table. The Team PokerStars Pro had bet the flop of A-A-9 with ace-jack in her hand and called all in on the king turn only to find her opponent having caught a full house with pocket kings. There was no redraw for her and she went immediately to rail Kevin MacPhee who was embroiled in his own hand.

MacPhee had opened to 1,200 preflop with Lucille Cailly flat-calling on the button, Jean Pierre Petroli squeezed to 4,100 from the blinds but MacPhee four-bet to 10,700. Cailly got out of the way and after about a minute's thought, Petroli made it 26,000.

Former EPT Berlin winner MacPhee sighed, knowing he was committed and put his chips in the middle as did the Frenchman.

MacPhee: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Petroli: {K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}

The board came an aceless {5-Spades}{6-Spades}{9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} and the couple exited to the rail together.
