High Roller Set to Begin

Philipp Gruissem
Philipp Gruissem

Season 9 of the European Poker Tour rolls on today at The Vic in London, England with the start of the £10,000 High Roller Event. The cards are set to be in the air in an hour or so, and we are anticipating a great field.

During Season 8 of the EPT, Team Germany crushed the High Roller. Philipp Gruissem (£450,200) bested his friend Igor Kurganov (£318,300) heads up. Joining them at the final table were notables Olivier Busquet (4th for £171,200) and Sam Trickett (7th for £68,800). We expect all four of these players to be in the field today.

With the elimination of Jason Mercier over in the EPT London Main Event, he will probably hop into this exclusive event as well. The Team PokerStars Pro won a £20,000 High Roller here in London back in 2008, besting John Juanda heads up to earn £516,000.

The cards will be in the air in roughly 45 minutes, and once we know the schedule for the day we wil pass it along. Be sure to stay tuned for all of your up-to-the-minute updates straight from the floor!

Good Start for Govert

Level 1 : 100/200, 25 ante

Govert Metaal opened to 500 on the button, Paul Volpe three-bet to 1,350 from the small blind, and the Dutchman made the call.

The dealer fanned {4-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}, Volpe continued for 1,025, and Metaal raised to 2,500. Volpe tank-called.

The turn was the {9-Hearts}, Volpe checked, and Metaal fired 5,100. Volpe made the call.

A repeat nine - the {9-Diamonds} - completed the board, and Volpe checked a second time. Metaal tossed out 13,000, sending Volpe into the tank. He stared at the Dutchman intently, then turned his attention to the board. Roughly a minute passed before Volpe returned his gaze to Metaal, but he then flicked his cards into the muck.

Metaal chipped up to around 60,000 chips, while Volpe dropped down to roughly 41,000.

Terry Wins Pot From Selbst

Level 1 : 100/200, 25 ante

Todd Terry had opened preflop from the cutoff and Team PokerStars Pro Vanessa Selbst made it 1,200 on the button which Terry called.

Both players checked the {7-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop and Terry led out for 1,400 on the {9-Hearts} turn which Selbst called. The river was the {7-Hearts} and Terry now led for 3,100, Selbst sat there thinking for about a minute before opting to release her hand.

No Lavallee Lost

Level 1 : 100/200, 25 ante

Jason Lavallee opened to 500 from the hijack seat, Govert Metaal three-bet to 1,300 on the button, and a player cold-called in the small blind. Lavallee called as well, and the dealer fanned {6-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{4-Hearts}. The trio checked.

The turn was the {k-Spades}, both the player in the small blind and Lavallee checked, and Metaal tossed out 2,300. Only Lavallee called.

The {6-Clubs} on the river paired the board, and Lavallee checked a third time. Metaal fired 7,500, and Lavallee tanked for nearly 90 seconds before calling. Metaal mucked his cards face down, and unwilling to show the winner, Lavallee sent his cards into the muck as well.
