Two Sets for Peters

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante

EPT regular Tobias Peters had been running well so far today. He made sets in two big hands, and got paid of.

In the first hand JP Kelly opened for 600 and the player on the button made the call. Peters found pocket jacks in the small blind and squeezed to 2,000. Both opponents called and a flop appeared: {A-}{9-}{4-} rainbow. Peters continued for 2,700 and just the button made the call.

The {J-} on the turn meant gin for Peters and he checked. His opponent checked behind and the dealer put a {Q-} to complete the board. Peters bet around the size of the pot and received a call. His opponent mucked seeing Peters' turned set.

In another hand Peters opened with pocket deuces. His next door neighbor, who Peters played with in Belgium before, made it 1,150 and the player on the button made the call. Peters came along as well and the three of them saw a flop: {2-}{A-}{10-} with two clubs. Peters check called 1,800, the button had folded by that time.

The {6-Hearts} on the turn made Peters check and his opponent bet 2,500 with a total stack of 11,000. Peters check raised to 5,350 and called the shove that followed. With his set of deuces Peters couldn't lose anymore, his opponent was drawing dead with {A-}{K-}.

Praz Bansi
Praz Bansi

Two-time WSOP bracelet winner Praz Bansi is among the Day 1B field. Bansi suffered a hit to his starting stack early on after having the misfortune of flopping a set of jacks in a hand when his opponent, Miroslav Alilovic, flopped a set of aces. But the "Hitsquad" member is continuing to battle as he pursues an EPT trophy to go with the other hardware he's earned.

Bansi is one of several pros who have sat down for Michelle Orpe's "Top Ten" list of questions over at Learn.PokerNews, a site dedicated to providing strategy advice and other useful information to beginning players. The last twenty minute break of the day has started. After two more levels a 75 minute dinner break will start and two more levels after that and Day 1B will be in the books. But first some fresh air for the players.

Fabulous for Fabron

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

Magali Fabron opened to 500 preflop from under the gun, Dimitri Holdeew made it 1,250 a few seats around before Andrea Dato four-bet to 2,900.

Fabron cold-called this bet and Holdeew folded.

The flop was {3-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{J-Clubs} and Fabron check-raised Dato's 2,000 flop bet to 5,000. Dato made the call to see the {2-Hearts} on the turn where Fabron quickly moved all in for 13,625. Dato tanked for several minutes before making the call, but he didn't like what he found.

Dato: {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}
Fabron: {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}

The river was the {6-Diamonds} and as a result, Fabron moved up to almost 40,000

A Triumvirate of Triple Crown Winners

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Jake Cody
Jake Cody

If somebody has won a live poker Triple Crown it means that they've won a WSOP Bracelet, a WPT Main Event and an EPT Main Event. Currently only five players hold that distinction Gavin Griffin was the first to achieve this feat and Roland De Wolfe the second. They weren't playing today but the other three were:

Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier: PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (Jan, 2008), WPT Festa Al Lago (October, 2008) and $10,000 7-Card Stud WSOP Bracelet (June, 2011).

Jake Cody: EPT Deauville (Jan, 2010), WPT London (August, 2010) and WSOP $25,000 no-limit Hold'em Heads-Up bracelet (May, 2011)

Davidi Kitai: WSOP $2,000 pot-limit Hold'em bracelet (June, 2008), WPT Celebrity Invitational (February, 2011) and EPT Berlin (April, 2012)

Whilst there are plenty of players who need an EPT title to complete the set - which is the toughest way to to do it as there are less EPT's per year than WSOP or WPT - there are only two players in the field here in Deauville who can crash the party. They both played yesterday and Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov (74,000) and Dominik Nitcsche (54,400) are both in with a shot or doing just that.

As for those already in the 'club' it wasn't a great day for Kitai as he's already out but Cody (41,800) and Grospellier (23,100) are still in.

Bad Day for ElkY So Far

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

We joined the action on the flop where Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier had bet 750 on a flop of {4-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{q-Clubs} and had been check-raised to 2,050 by Zeien Thibaud from France. Elky made the call and they saw the turn card fall the {5-Clubs}. Thibaud checked and then called a bet of 2,600 from ElkY and they saw a final river card of {7-Spades}. They both checked and when Thibaud turned over {5-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for two pair Elky shook his head beneath his hood and sighed deeply. He then sighed and shook his head some more.

Determined to fight back Elky opened the next pot for 600 and found one caller in the big blind, Clement Guilleminot. They both checked the flop {9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} and the turn {a-Hearts}. When the river came a {2-Hearts} Guilleminot threw out a 600 bet and ElkY flicked in the chips. Guilleminot’s {k-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} was good enough and a few more chips slipped from ElkY’s stack.
