Dmitry Yurasov Leads the Final Nine of the Record-Setting EPT10 Vienna High Roller

Level 20 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante

On Friday, the European Poker Tour Vienna €10,000 High Roller set a record for the largest high roller of Season 10. Day 1 originally attracted 136 players that accounted for 35 reentries, which brought the field up to 171. Late registration was open until the start of Day 2, and ten players – five first timers and five reentries – took advantage, which brought the total field up to 181 entries, just one more than the EPT10 Barcelona High Roller.

The massive turnout generated a prize pool of €1,773,800 which was to be distributed to the top 27 players. After ten one-hour levels of play, the money was reached and the field whittled down to the final nine. The man best positioned to capture the €392,900 first-place prize is Russian Dmitry Yurasov, who emerged as the chip leader with 1.866 million; however, 2011 EPT London champ Benny Spindler is hot on his heels after being on top of an aces-versus-kings hand late in the evening.

The day began with dozens of eliminations including Khiem Nguyen, Carl Carlsson, Team Online's Marc-Andre Ladouceur, Toby Lewis, Dimitar Danchev, Ronny Kaiser, David Vamplew, Philipp Gruissem, and Mike "Timex" McDonald.

There were just 28 players left in Level 17 (4,000/8,000/1,000), and a lot of them were short stacks clinging to life in the hopes of making it to the money. Odds were one of them would be the bubble boy, but instead it turned out to be a player who could have coasted to the money.

It happened when Viacheslav Goryachev opened for 18,000 and Jens Lakemeier three-bet him to 39,000. Action folded back around to Goryachev and he announced that he was all in for 247,000. Much to the surprise, and no doubt delight, of the rest of the table, Lakemeier snap-called. The players didn't revealed their cards until action had concluded at the other tables, and when they did Goryachev discovered the bad news.

Goryachev: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}
Lakemeier: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}

The railbirds were several deep all around the table, with many of the high rollers coming to see if they were about to earn at least a €17,750 payday. The {5-Spades}{8-Hearts}{10-Hearts} flop left Goryachev in need of running cards, which meant when the {4-Spades} blanked on the turn the bubble was burst. The meaningless {2-Diamonds} was put out on the river to make it official, and then Goryachev headed to the exit as the bubble boy.

From there the in-the-money eliminations came fast and furious. Among those to hit the rail were Alexander Dovzhenko (27th - €17,750), Sam Trickett (25th - €17,750), EPT10 Prague High Roller champ Ivan Soshnikov (24th - €17,750), Team PokerStars Pro Theo Jorgensen (17th - €23,950), Simon Ravnsbaek (16th - €23,950), and Jonathan Karamlikis (15th - €26,600).

Others who fell before the end of the night were Jonas Kronwitter (14th - €26,600), Jens Lakemeier (13th - €29,250), EPT10 London Main Event champ Robin Ylitalo (12th - €29,250), Alex Bilokur (11th - €33,700), and recent Sunday Million champ Jose Carlos Garcia (10th - €33,700).

The third and final day is set to kick off at Noon local time, and the returning nine players will play down to a winner. Likewise, the final table of the EPT10 Vienna Main Event will be playing down to a winner just across the room. Of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to bring you all the action, so be sure to join us then to find out who is crowned champion here at the Hofburg Palace!

Until then, find out what various poker pros think about “hitting and running”:

EPT10 London Champ Robin Ylitalo Eliminated in 12th Place (€29,250)

Level 20 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Robin Ylitalo - 12th Place
Robin Ylitalo - 12th Place

Back in October, Robin Ylitalo won the PokerStars.com EPT London Main Event for £560,980. He was hoping to capture another EPT title here in Vienna, but those dreams were just crushed by Team PokerStars Pro Jonathan Duhamel.

It happened when Ylitalo opened for 35,000 only to have Duhamel move all in from the small blind. Ylitalo quickly called off for right around 290,000.

Ylitalo: {a-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}
Duhamel: {a-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}

Ylitalo was in dire straits, and he seemed to know his time had come when the {7-Spades}{3-Spades}{8-Spades} flop failed to help him. The {2-Spades} turn put four spades on the board, meaning a fifth on the river would result in a chop. Ylitalo paused to see if one would come, but it didn't as instead the {J-Diamonds} peeled off.

Team PokerStars Pro Theo Jorgensen Eliminated in 17th Place (€23,950)

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Theo Jorgensen - 17th Place
Theo Jorgensen - 17th Place

Action folded to Team PokerStars Pro Theo Jorgensen in the small blind and he raised to 22,000. The ever-aggressive Dmitry Yurasov responded with a three-bet to 49,000 from the big blind, and Jorgensen called to see a flop of {7-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}.

Jorgensen checked, and Yurasov continued for approximately 45,000. Jorgensen wasted little time in moving all in for about 240,000, and Yurasov snapped him off.

Jorgensen: {9-Spades}{8-Spades}
Yurasov: {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

Jorgensen flopped an open-ended straight draw, which he needed to hit in order to overcome the pocket nines of Yurasov. The {K-Spades} turn didn't do it, and neither did the {4-Spades} river. Jorgensen missed and was eliminated in 17th place.

That leaves Jonathan Duhamel as the last Team PokerStars Pro in the field. It also means that it's time for the two-table redraw.

Ihar Soika Eliminated in 18th Place (€21,300)

Level 18 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Ihar Soika - 18th Place
Ihar Soika - 18th Place

Benny Spindler opened the action with a min-raise to 20,000, which prompted Jonas Kronwitter to come in with a three-bet to 45,000. Ihar Soika then four-bet jammed for 281,000 from the cutoff, the button and both blinds folded, and Spindler moved all in over the top. Kronwitter got out of the way, and the cards were turned up.

Soika: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Spindler: {a-Spades}{k-Spades}

Both players shared an ace, which meant it came down to the kicker. Spindler was best in that department, meaning Spoika needed some help. The {8-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{a-Clubs} flop gave Spindler two pair and left Soika in need of either running straight cards or hearts. The {K-Clubs} turn made it a mute point as Spindler filled up, and after the {2-Hearts} was put out on the river, Soika made his way to the payout desk in 18th place to collect €21,300.

Ivan Soshnikov Eliminated in 24th Place (€17,750)

Level 17 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Ivan Soshnikov - 24th Place
Ivan Soshnikov - 24th Place

Back in December, Ivan Soshnikov won the EPT10 Prague High Roller for €382,050. The Russian was looking to become the first player to win two EPT High Roller titles, but that dream just came to an end.

It happened when action folded to a short-stacked Soshnikov on the button, and he hesitated. He seemed to be eyeing up the other tables to see if he might ladder up in the money, but after about a minute of waiting he moved all in for 47,000. The small blind quickly folded, and then Anatoly Filatov, who is sitting on a massive stack, called the small raise.

Soshnikov: {k-Diamonds}{8-Spades}
Filatov: {a-Spades}{9-Spades}

Soshnikov was drawing to two live cards, but he was drawing dead when the flop came down {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. The {3-Clubs} turn and {8-Diamonds} river completed the board, and then Soshnikov wished the table luck before taking his leave.

Goryachev is the EPT10 Vienna High Roller Bubble Boy

"I Misplayed That Very Badly"

Level 15 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Johannes Strassmann
Johannes Strassmann

A huge pot just went down that left one player uttering the quote you see above.

The exact preflop action escaped us, but it appeared Johannes Strassmann five-bet shoved his massive stack and Jose Carlos Garcia, who had a sizable stack himself, called off for 305,000 total.

Garcia: {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}
Strassmann: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}

Strassmann's body language indicated that he immediately regretted the move, and he paid the price after the board ran out {5-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}.

"I misplayed that very badly," Strassmann lamented, clearly upset with the move he had made.

Not longer after, Garcia opened for 10,000 and then called when three-bet shoved for 71,000.

Strassmann: {a-Spades}{q-Clubs}
Garcia: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Strassmann was in need of an ace, but he received no help as the board ran out {4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{8-Hearts}. A frustrated Strassmann shoved his chips forward causing them to roll all about the table. He then made a beeline toward the exit while Garcia collected the pot.

McDonald in the House

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Mike McDonald
Mike McDonald

Mike McDonald opened the betting for 5,500 and found a single caller, Konstantin Puchkov from Russia, on the button. “How much do you have?” asked McDonald before the flop and Puchkov showed him his stack of about 70,000.

Flop {3-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{7-Hearts} and McDonald bet 7,500 which Puchkov called. The turn card was the {8-Hearts} which both players opted to check. The {q-Clubs} on the river saw McDonald put out a neatly stacked bet of 20,000. Puchkov wanted to know how much it was so the dealer knocked it over so he could see.

Puchkov made the call and McDonald turned over his {7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}. “Full house.” The dealer declared. Puchkov couldn’t beat it and shook his head in disbelief as he counted what remained of his stack.

Jorgensen Gets Lucky and a Warning

Level 12 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Theo Jorgensen
Theo Jorgensen

Toby Lewis moved all in from late position for his last 44,100 and Team PokerStars Pro Theo Jorgensen splashed in some chips to signify a call from the small blind. The problem was he forgot to wait for Benny Spindler on the button.

The floor was called over and ruled that if Spindler raised, then Jorgensen would be allowed to take back his move. If Spindler either called or folded, Jorgensen's move would stand. Spindler folded, Jorgensen called, and the big blind folded.

Jorgensen: {a-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}
Lewis: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

Both players held an ace, which meant Lewis was well out in front with his king kicker. The {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop kept him in the lead, but then disaster struck when the dealer burned and turned the {Q-Hearts}. Suddenly Lewis needed a king to survive, but that didn't happen as the {7-Spades} peeled off on the river instead.

After the hand, Jorgensen received a warning from the floor — act out of turn again, and you'll receive a one-round penalty.

Day 2 EPT Vienna High Roller Set to Go

Andrey Andreev
Andrey Andreev

The penultimate day of the EPT Vienna High Roller sponsored by PokerStars.net here at the Hofburg Palace is set to begin very shortly.

A total of 136 players entered the tournament and with 35 reentries this brings the total field so far up to 171 entries. Payouts will be confirmed when registration closes at the start of the day, but the first-place prize will undoubtedly be over €250,000.

There are still 80 players remaining and it is Andrey Andreev from Russia who leads the field with 338,400 chips after winning a huge pot on the second-to-last hand of yesterday’s play. Not far behind him though are the two Danes, Simon Ravnsbaek (315,100) in second and Team PokerStars Pro Theo Jorgensen (298,700) in third.

Players on their second bullet who are still in the tournament include Team PokerStars Pros Jonathan Duhamel (111,700), Eugene Katchalov (69,800), and Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (55,000), along with PokerStars Team Online’s Marc-Andre Ladouceur (35,700).

Registration is still open until the start of play today and there are a few players who have been eliminated but can still fire that second €10,000 bullet: Daniel “Jungleman” Cates, Maxim Lykov, Joni Jouhkimainen, Sotirios Koutoupas, Walid Bou Habib, Sergio Aido, and Kimmo Kurko are just a few of the players who entered and subsequently busted Day 1.

Some other players to watch on Day 2 include Sam Trickett (134,000), Alex Kravchenko (114,700) and Surinder Sunar (235,700).

The money bubble will burst towards the later levels of the day so there is still some way to go before the remaining players can expect a return on their investment. Play will then continue until a final table of eight emerges.

Play resumes at Noon local time with the blinds now at 1000 / 2000 / 300. Be sure to stay tuned as the PokerNews live reporting team keep you up to date with all the big hands, chip counts, bust outs and so much more.
