Sebastian Trisch Leads at End of Day 2; Blom & Hansen Advance

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Sebastian Trisch
Sebastian Trisch

The 10th season of the European Poker Tour continued on Tuesday with Day 2 action from Vienna. Registration closed before the start of play, and with a few late registrants the final total of entrants reached 910 players, which means the prize pool is a juicy €4,413,500. The winner is set to receive €816,000, a beautiful trophy and a luxurious Swiss SLYDE watch, with 135 players getting paid a minimum of €8,700.

The man best positioned to make a run at the top prize is Germany's Sebastian Trisch, who completed the day in the lead over the estimated 189 advancing players with a commanding stack of 568,500 in chips. He started the day as one of the big stacks with 146,200 and never really looked back. He was followed by Artur Koren in second place with 463,000 in chips, while Marko Neumann rounded out the top three with 421,100.

One of the first players to be eliminated at the start of the day was the winner of the last EPT Vienna, Michael Eiler. The defending champ fell in Level 9 (400/800/100) when Christian Stallinger opened for 1,600 and Eiler put in the last of his 5,500. Stallinger made the call with the {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds} and Eiler was racing for his tournament life with the {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}. The cards fell {5-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{j-Spades} and Eiler made his way to the exit, which assured a new EPT champion would emerge in Vienna.

As previously mentioned, it was still possible to buy into the event at the start of Day 2, and one of three players who took that option was Daniel “Jungleman” Cates. He would last less than an hour, though, when he called a preflop raise with kings and saw the flop come {a-}{k-}{5-}. He called a bet on the flop and all the money went in on the {3-} turn. His opponent had top set with {a-}{a-} and the case king failed to appear for Cates.

Some other notable players who failed to make it through the night include Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree, who ran queens into aces, and Maxim Lykov, who exited when he five-bet shoved the {6-Spades}{6-Hearts} and was eventually called by the {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} of Antoine Granath. The chip leader at the start of the day, Mads Smith Hansen, also failed to advance.

Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier did make it through, ending with 61,300. He will be joined by Full Tilt Poker Professional Viktor “Isildur1” Blom, who made a rare live tournament appearance here in Austria. Blom bagged up 93,400 in chips and was kind enough to give Pokernews an exclusive interview at one of the breaks.

Gus Hansen, the other Full Tilt Poker Professional, also made it through to Day 3 with 221,000 in chips. He was helped on his way by one of his trademark "less-than-stellar" hands that ended up cracking the aces of Marko Neumann.

Meanwhile, Sam Trickett finished up with 290,000, continuing to run “pure,” as he put it. Just before the end of play, he eliminated Vitaly Lunkin when the two got the money in before the flop with Trickett holding the {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} against the {a-Clubs}{10-Spades} of Lunkin. A final board of {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} gave Trickett a flush on the river and Lunkin’s stack.

Day 3 will kick off at 12 p.m. local time on Wednesday, and it shouldn't take long for the money to be reached. Be sure to join the Pokernews Live Reporting team for up-to-the-minute coverage of the EPT Vienna Main Event sponsored by PokerStars.net. No More Chips for Yu

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Ben Yu
Ben Yu

We saw Ben Yu, who you may recall knocked out Olivier Busquet not too long ago, wandering the halls and he confirmed that he had been eliminated. According to Yu, he lost two big pots. In the first he bluffed but could not push his opponent off top pair.

In the other, he and his opponent got about 100,000 each in on a {j-}{10-}{5-} flop. Yu held {k-}{q-} for an open-ended straight draw, while his opponent had a set with {10-}{10-}. The straight didn't get there, and Yu was left with approximately eight big blinds.

He got them in a short time later with {k-}{q-}, but against that hand failed to win as his opponent's {a-}{k-} held firm.

Yu then informed us that he'll be bouncing around Europe until the EPT Sanremo rolls around, which of course will be followed by the Grand Final.

A Short Talk With Viktor Blom

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Viktor Blom
Viktor Blom

Viktor Blom's table is going to be the feature table, so you'll be able to enjoy some live-streaming "Isildur1" action in about 10 minutes. On a recent break before his table moved, we had the chance to talk to Blom:

Viktor, how's the tournament going for you so far?

It's going good. I've been moved to a crazy table, so there've been a lot of big pots. It's been fun, really. I like it when there's things happening at the table. I'm having a good time for sure.

You're being moved to the feature table after the break. Do you like playing under the bright lights?

I don't really like it because it's so hot up there. On top of that, it's gonna take a lot of time for each hand to finish so we'll play less hands. I just prefer a normal table, but it is what it is.

You've done well in tournaments in the past, but do you enjoy them?

I enjoy them, but the first day is tough for me. I don't have a lot of patience, but when you go deep I think it's more fun to be in a tournament than in a cash game.

We talked to Sam Trickett on the last break, and he's going to play the Big One for One Drop this summer at the World Series of Poker. Is that on your mind?

Yeah, of course it's on my mind, but I haven't thought about it too much. I don't know yet, to be honest. I think I'll be at the World Series this year, but I'm not a 100 percent sure yet, though. It sucks so much that it's right in the middle of the summer. It's crazy as I won't be able to enjoy the World Cup that way. I didn't go last year but we'll see, I might be there.

Lastly, how are things online for you these days?

There have been some good games lately but I haven't been doing too well. I think I'm up some for the year, but I lost some back. It's going OK, I guess.

Jamila Jams Jacks

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Jamila Von Perger
Jamila Von Perger

Jamila von Perger, one of the Vienna fan favorites, has just been knocked out in a huge pot against Greek pro Iliodoros Kamatakis. Von Perger was far from happy with the way the hand played out, and in her eyes, the slowroll Kamatakis put her through.

The action started with a raise to 2,500 from Kamatakis under the gun and the action folded around to Von Perger, who called from the button. The player in the small blind three-bet to 7,500 and both Kamatakis and Von Perger called.

The flop brought out {2-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{7-Spades} in this three-way pot and the small blind opted to check. Kamatakis, who has two EPT cashes under his belt, bet 9,000 and Von Perger threw in the chips needed to see a turn card. The small blind folded and the action went heads up to the turn.

On the turn a third spade popped up with the {8-Spades} and Kamatakis bet another 18,200. Von Perger went into the tank for a bit before moving all in for a total of 93,900. This big shove was clearly not something Kamatakis had anticipated, as he went into the tank for several minutes. Ultimately he made the call and Von Perger exploded.

"Are you serious?" Von Perger squealed, as Kamatakis turned over {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs} for a set of eights.

One of the leading ladies of poker in Germany showed {J-Clubs}{J-Diamonds} for a pair of jacks and she was drawing very slim.

"How can you slowroll me so hard?" Von Perger cried, as Kamatakis silently awaited the river card.

The river brought the {4-Clubs} and Von Perger was knocked out. Steaming Von Perger left the room as Kamatakis stacked a large pile of chips.

"She should never have queens or jacks there, always a set or a flush," Kamatakis defended his play after Von Perger had left.

Right or wrong, Kamatakis now has a mountain of chips while Von Perger will have to take solace in the fact that there will be more chances in the array of side events hosted here at EPT Vienna.

Pinho Busts Gruissem

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Philipp Gruissem
Philipp Gruissem

From middle position Team PokerStars Pro Henrique Pinho raised it up to 2,500. Behind him it was German super star Philipp Gruissem making the three bet to 5,600. Action folded back to Pinho who inquired how high Gruissem's stacks were. Gruissem told his Portuguese opponent he had about 40,000 behind and Pinho made the call.

{Q-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}

Pinho checked to Gruissem who checked behind. There would be action on the {4-Diamonds} though. Pinho bet out 5,100 and Gruissem made the call.

The {J-Spades} fell on the river and Pinho bet out 17,000. Gruissem thought for a little bit and announced he was all in. As fast as Pinho called, Gruissem might already have expected his {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades} was not the best hand anymore. Pinho indeed showed a better hand as he was the proud owner of {9-Hearts}{10-Hearts} for the rivered straight.

"All right, good luck guys" said Gruissem as he got up from the table, grabbed his characteristic leather jacker and made his way to the exit.

Changing of the Guard

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jasper Wetemans
Jasper Wetemans

Jasper Wetemans started out as the Dutch player with the most chips but that sure has changed.

The Dutch EPT regular, who cashed in the last six EPT Main Events he played in, now has about 43,000 left after losing a 110,000 pot. In that hand he had {A-}{J-} on a {A-}{J-}{5-} flop with two spades. Though top-two might sound pretty good, it was pretty terrible as his opponent held pocket jacks for the set. No ace on the turn or river and Wetemans had to forfeit a lot of his oh so carefully gathered chips.

In the other corner of the majestic Festsaal his countryman Luuk Gieles is seated. Gieles, who played a fare share of EPT's as well, has a little over a 100,000 by now. He won kings versus fives, won a flip with ace-king versus jacks and won one big non-showdown pot.

The king (Wetemans) is dead. Long live the king as Gieles now leads the Dutch contingent.

The Rare River 3-Bet

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Marc-Andre Ladouceur
Marc-Andre Ladouceur

We picked up the action on a {9-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{K-Clubs} board as Austrian player Christian Stallinger bet out 6,100. Marc-Andre Ladouceur made the call in position and the dealer put the {Q-Spades} on the table.

This is where things got interesting. Stallinger bet out 8,200 and Ladouceur pondered a little before raising to 26,700. This was not the end of it though as Stallinger made it 61,200. Ladouceur sighed,... and called.

Stallinger showed his {A-Spades}{9-Diamonds} which he by now was pretty sure was no good of course. Ladouceur opened {K-Spades}{Q-Clubs} and raked in the chips.

A Classic Gus Hand Beats Aces

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Gus Hansen
Gus Hansen

Gus Hansen's been known all over the world for his creative and aggressive playing style, and he just showed German pro Marko Neumann that it still works.

Hansen raised to 2,100 from late position and Neumann three-bet from the blinds to 7,000. The Great Dane went into the tank for a bit but eventually he made the call.

The flop brought out {6-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds} and Neumann gave it some thought before betting 7,500. Hansen played around with his chips for a bit before casually tossing in the call, chip by chip. On the turn the {5-Spades} popped up and both players checked.

On the river the board completed with the {8-Diamonds} and Neumann checked once again. Hansen took about 20 seconds before putting together a big bet worth 26,600 with just 15,000 chips left behind.

With a stoic look Neumann tanked and ultimately he put in the call. Hansen flipped over {7-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for a turned straight and he raked in this pot as Neumann flashed {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}. The German pro's head slowly turned a bit red, but he remained silent as Hansen had just cracked his pocket aces.

Set Over Set Sends Cates Home

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Daniel Cates
Daniel Cates

Daniel Cates entered the EPT Vienna Main Event on the second day, and in total he played for less than an hour before busting out. Most of the times, when starting the day with a small stack, options are very limited but Cates was just knocked out in a "real" hand.

As we noticed Cates exit the tournament room we asked his former opponents what went down.

Cates called a raise preflop holding pocket kings and saw a {A-}{K-}{5-} flop roll out. Cates called another bet on the flop and on the turn, when a {3-} popped up, the remainder of his chips went into the pot.

The beautiful set of kings looked very bleak when Cates' opponent tabled {A-}{A-} for a set of aces, and the river did not bring the final card in the deck that would help him out.

Later this week, on March 27, the €10,000 will be played and there's a good chance Cates will be back for that.

The Defending Champ Falls

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Michael Eiler
Michael Eiler

Christian Stallinger opened for 1,600 and PokerStars player Michael Eiler, who is the defending champ of this event after winning it back in Season 7, put in the last of his 5,500, Stallinger made the call with {j-Spades}{j-Diamonds} and Eiler was racing for his tournament life with {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}.

The cards fell {5-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{j-Spades} and Eiler made his way to the exit.

Stallinger claimed his second victim in back-to-back hands, and this time it assured a new EPT champion would emerge in Vienna.
