Nick Petrangelo Leads After Day 2 and Looks To Continue Huge Year

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Nick Petrangelo
Nick Petrangelo

Day 2 of the 2015 European Poker Tour €5,300 Main Event is done and dusted. After just about 1,000 players returned for action, the field was steadily cut down to 343. Finishing atop the survivors was a familiar face, as Nick Petrangelo bagged up 570,000.

Petrangelo was slowly building throughout the day, but in the final level of the night he was hanging around 225,000 or so. A few hands helped him increase his stack, but the banger came when he busted Tonnie Krijn in one of the final hands of the night to shoot all the way up the leaderboard. Petrangelo has been having himself quite a year, first winning over $400,000 at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure, cashing twice for six-figure scores at EPT Malta, and then winning his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet during the summer. He has plenty more big results on top of that, having already earned over $1.4 million this year.

Third to Petrangelo was Brazilian Andre Akkari. He bagged up a stack at 543,000. Others who did very well were Shyam Srinivasan (433,000), John Juanda (371,000), Dario Sammartino (335,400), Patrik Antonius (265,100), and Jens Kyllonen (214,000)

On the other end of the spectrum, bunches and bunches of players hit the rail. Some of the notable eliminations were Russell Thomas, Ruben Visser, Ami Barer, Nicholas Rampone, Luca Moschitta, Sergio Aido, Vladimir Troyanovskiy, and [Removed:17]. Several members of Team PokerStars also hit the rail, including Eugene Katchalov, Jan Heitmann, Leo Fernandez, Liliya Novikova, Grzegorz Mikielewicz, and Naoya Kihara.

Day 3 will commence at 12 p.m. on Thursday, and that's when the prize pool should be made known. As of right now, the PokerStars registration team is working on finalizing details of all of the buy-ins before releasing the official numbers.

Until then, we'll leave you with an interview with Antonius from today.

Lavallee and the Twitter Slow Roll

Jason Lavallee
Jason Lavallee

Canadian Jason Lavallee is a world class troll on Twitter from time to time, and just now he even managed to trick the PokerNews crew. Lavallee Tweeted about the following hand, and we assumed he had hit the rail.

Jason LavalleeGot it in for 40bbs qq vs aq ace in the window

Four minutes after sending out this Tweet, Lavallee provided a 140-character napkin for the tears of his followers by sending out the rest of the hand.

Jason LavalleeThe second card was a queen tho doubled up to 80bbs heading into the last lvl of the day

Lavallee laughed upon discovering we fell for it as well when we spotted him still sitting in the tournament with 223,000 chips. The winner of the EPT London high roller explained what happened in the hands that he won, as he's currently doing quite well near the end of Day 2.

The player in the hijack raised to 4,500 and Lavallee three-bet from the cutoff to 11,000 and the action folded back to the initial raiser. Lavallee got four-bet to 23,000 and he responded by moving all in for 79,000. Lavallee got called by ace-queen and his queens, as described in the Tweets above, held up.

A little while later a player raised under the gun to 4,500 and Lavallee three-bet to 11,000 from the button. Lavallee opponent shoved for 60,000 with {10-}{10-}, and he hit the rail after losing to {K-}{K-}.

De Meulder the Big Stack

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Matthias De Meulder
Matthias De Meulder

You sometimes hear of a special connection twins have with each other where the one feels if something really good or bad is happening with his or hers brother or sister. If that's the case for the Belgian PokerStars Team Pro's Matthias and Christophe De Meulder, the latter must have felt something good a couple of minutes ago.

Matthias De Meulder isn't joined by his twin brother Christophe here in Barcelona, but so far the day has been pretty great for Matthias. He just told us about a hand where a player opened for 3,500 before the break. The player on the button made the call, the small blind added some chips, and De Meulder with the {3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} in the big blind called as well.

The flop came {Q-Spades}{4-Spades}{5-Clubs} and the small blind and De Meulder checked. The initial raiser made a bet of 6,500 and the player on the button made the call. The small blind folded, De Meulder called.

An off suit {6-} fell on the turn giving De Meulder a straight. The Belgian Team Pro checked his option and saw the initial raiser bet 15,000 with 65,000 behind. The button called and De Meulder shoved all in, putting both his opponents to the test. The initial raiser called, the button folded.

De Meulder had to dodge board pair outs as the initial raiser had pocket fours. The river {9-} was a blank and De Meulder could start stacking.

Novikova No More

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Liliya Novikova
Liliya Novikova

After doubling up Raniszewski, Team Online's Liliya Novikova got right back into action. She was first lucky enough to chop with {A-Clubs}{4-Clubs} against Daniel Dvoress's {A-Hearts}{7-Clubs} as the board ran out {2-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. The next hand though, she wouldn't be so lucky.

She pushed all in under the gun for her last 11,600 and action folded to Haresh Thaker from the United Kingdom. He called from the hijack and all others folded.

Haresh Thaker: {A-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}
Liliya Novikova: {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}

The board came {3-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and with the rivered flush, Thaker send Novikova packing.

The Ace of Hearts Keeps Gilmartin Smiling

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Lynn Gilmartin
Lynn Gilmartin

It looked as though Joao Simao had raised under the gun when Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden called from the button for 2,700. Former PokerNews hostess, and current World Poker Tour anchor, Lynn Gilmartin was seated to Lodden's direct left and she moved all in for 36,300.

Simao moved all in as well, and Lodden folded right away.

Gilmartin: {A-Spades}{Q-Spades}
Simao: {J-Spades}{J-Hearts}

The board ran out {10-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{A-Hearts} and the ace on the river kept Gilmartin in the tournament.

"Now I have to change my strategy," Gilmartin said with a smile, as she now has some real chips to play with. Moments after winning this pot Gilmartin tweeted that she won another pot, and currently she sits on 91,000.

Patrik Antonius

Frank Blumlein raised it up from middle position and Menno Mensonides made the call. Patrik Antonius in the big blind over called and the three of them saw a flop of {4-Hearts}{3-Spades}{5-Spades}. Antonius checked and Blumlein made a continuation bet. Mensonides and Antonius both called.

The {5-Clubs} fell on the turn and Antonius checked again. Blumlein bet 7,000 with 27,000 behind and Mensonides folded. Antonius thought about it for a bit before shoving all in. Blumlein wasn't to thrilled to commit all of his chips, but did so anyway.

Patrik Antonius: {9-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}
Frank Blumlein: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

The {Q-Hearts} hit the river and Blumlein left the tournament area with hanging shoulders of diasppoinment. Patrik Antonius plays 265,000.

November Niner Pierre Neuville Eliminated

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Pierre Neuville
Pierre Neuville

Two time EPT Main Event runner up and current November Niner Pierre Neuville has been eliminated from the tournament. Non other than high roller Mustapha Kanit was the one responsible for the Belgians departure.

Kanit made it 2,000 under the gun and the player on the button called. Pierre Neuville in the small blind squeezed all in for 16,800 and the big blind instantly folded. Kanit thought about it for a bit and called, the button folded.

Mustapha Kanit: {A-Clubs}{J-Spades}
Pierre Neuville: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}

The flop came {J-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}, a small disaster for Neuville who got severely out flopped. He had one eight left to hit on top of his gutshot, but Kanit had a pair plus flush draw. Neuville kept his hopes up but Kanit said it wasn't going to happen: "I'm gonna win this one."

The {Q-Clubs} on the turn sealed the deal for Kanit and the {Q-Hearts} on the river was there just to make things official. Neuville shook hands with Kanit and wandered off, the 72-yeah old routinier probably was on his way to play another tournament.

Spain's Samuel Bernabeu Leads Nearly 1,000 Players Returning for Day 2

Welcome back to another great day of poker from the sunny setting of Barcelona, Spain.

Today marks Day 2 of the 2015 European Poker Tour Barcelona €5,300 Main Event, and what an event this has turned out to be thus far. With an astounding 1,673 entries so far, it has proven to be the largest EPT main event in the history of the tour. To make it even more impressive, that number should rise with registration remaining open until the start of Day 2.

Leading the way into Day 2 is Spain's Samuel Bernabeu, who bagged up a whopping 203,000 in chips on yesterday's Day 1b. He eclipsed Day 1a's chip leader, Imad Derwiche with 170,000, by a bit and will be the man to catch going forward. Other notables with big stacks are Simeon Naydenov (157,000), Jude Ainsworth (155,800), Sin Melin (155,800), Andras Nemeth (148,800), and Erwann Pecheux (147,200).

Outside of the big stacks, there are several top pros still in the hunt. Niall Farrell finished up Day 1b with 84,400 in chips, and Winfred Yu bagged up 82,800. Coming from Day 1a, you have Patrik Antonius with 103,800, John Juanda with 89,300, and Dario Sammartino with 86,500.

All told, there are 989 survivors who will start Day 2, plus any that enter before the start of play. The cards are scheduled to be in the air at 12 p.m. local time with the blinds at 400/800/100. Only six 75-minute levels are on the schedule for today, meaning play should end around 8:15 p.m. local time.

As always, you can stay tuned right here to PokerNews for continued coverage of the tournament as the quest for the next EPT champion unfolds.
