Velvelt Vanishes

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

After being crippled by El Amir Ziad Chehab, who had made a flush with the {k-Spades}{4-Spades}, Estonia's Urmo Velvelt was left with just 250 in chips.

They went in the very next hand from the hijack, and Team PokerStars Pro Andre Akkari three-bet to 400 from the cutoff. The player in the big blind came along, and then check-called a bet of 525 from Akkari on the {k-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} flop. Both players checked the {J-Hearts} turn, and then the player in the big blind fired out 1,500 on the {9-Spades} river.

Akkari folded, the big blind tabled the {k-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for two pair, and Velvelt revealed the {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds} before becoming the second player to hit the rail here on Day 1a of the EPT11 Grand Final Main Event.

Rough Start for Chen

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

With 2,625 in the pot and a flop of {3-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{8-Spades}, Andrew Chen checked from the under-the-gun position and Mohamad El Siblani bet 2,000 from early position. Chen made the call and then both players checked the {2-Diamonds} turn as well as the {A-Diamonds} river.

Chen showed the {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for a missed straight draw, and then Siblani rolled over the {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} to claim the small pot. Not a huge loss for Chen, but it did put him down to 20,500.

Shakerchi Shown the King of Hearts

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Talal Shakerchi
Talal Shakerchi

After the under-the-gun player opened for a standard raise, Talal Shakerchi three-bet to 700 from the cutoff. Action folded back to the original raiser, who four-bet to 2,150, and Shakerchi called to see a flop of {2-Hearts}{q-Hearts}{j-Hearts}.

The under-the-gun player led out for 5,150, and that did the trick as Shakerchi quickly folded. His opponent then flashed the {K-Hearts}.

Disastrous Start for Dan Smith

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

In the first hand he played today, disaster struck Dan Smith. We didn't see the hand unfold, but the pro did tweet a picture showing what happened. As you can see below, Smith held the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} on a {q-Spades}{j-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}{j-Spades} board for aces full of queens. Unfortunately for him, Alexander Timokhin held the {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} for quads! It appeared Timokhin doubled on the hand and Smith was crippled.

Happy Birthday, Dear Boutros

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Boutros Naim
Boutros Naim

Tucked away in a corner of the Salle des Etoiles, Boutros Naim had reason to celebrate early on Day 1a of the Main Event. No, he hadn't won a big pot yet, but he had quietly let slip that today was his 65th birthday. However, seated at table one, seat one, and hidden beneath a hat, sunglasses and a scarf, Naim was determined to keep a low profile.

Naim is an EPT regular, and we saw him at the last EPT stop in Malta. His biggest EPT cash however came in the Season 11 opener in Barcelona, as he cashed the Main Event in 61st for €16,300.

As for birthday celebrations, Naim said he had no plans, but that he would definitely be celebrating if he made it to Level 6. With eight levels scheduled for today, we'll have to wait and see if there are any birthday surprises in store for him!

Jacks for Haxton

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton

With a little over half an hour of Day 1a gone, Isaac Haxton was settling in at his table. Heads up on a flop that read {9-Hearts}{10-Hearts}{8-Spades} he quickly called his opponent's bet. Both players checked the {6-Diamonds} on the turn, and again on the scary {A-Clubs} on the river. His opponent showed {K-Clubs}{9-Clubs} for a pair of nines, but Haxton quickly showed pocket jacks to take down the pot.
