Jaroslaw Sikora Leads Day 1b Field; Jaka and Engel Build Big Stacks

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Jaroslaw Sikora
Jaroslaw Sikora

Day 1b of the European Poker Tour Malta Main Event attracted 460 players to the Portamaso Casino, which along with Day 1a's 184 runners brings the current total to 644. However, that number is sure to go up some as late registration is open until the start of Day 2.

After eight 75-minute levels of play, approximately 285 players remained with Poland's Jaroslaw Sikora (153,700) and France's Ludovic Riehl (150,000) leading the way. Others who bagged big stacks were Jens Lakemeier (138,000), Faraz Jaka (120,900), and Ari Engel (109,000), just to name a few.

Speaking of Jaka, he won an particularly interesting hand in the last level of the night. It was one worth a massive 96,500, and he won it at showdown without so much as a pair. You can read more about that hand by clicking here.

Last season, France's Jean Montury made history by becoming the first-ever EPT Malta champ, a feat he accomplished after topping a field of 895 players – which created a €4,340,750 prize pool – to take home a €687,400 first-place prize along with a SLYDE championship watch.

Montury was in action on Day 1b, but his title defense came to an abrupt end shortly after returning from dinner. His demise came after Mamouni Smain opened for 1,200 and then called when the defending champ three-bet to 3,600. Smain proceeded to check-call a bet of 3,600 on the {9-}{7-}{4-} two-heart flop, and then checked the non-heart {Q-} turn. Montury bet 7,200, Smain check-raised all in, and Montury called off his remaining 3,000 or so.

Montury: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Smain: {9-}{9-}

The river was a blank, meaning Smain's flopped set help to send Montury to the rail where he joined the likes of Luca Pagano, who was the first player eliminated on Day 1b; EPT8 London champ Benny Spindler; EPT first-timer Doug Lee; 2011 World Series of Poker runner-up Martin Staszko; Team PokerStars' Fatima Moreira de Melo, Pier Paolo Fabretti, Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, and Andre Akkari.

Akkari actually fell in Level 4 (100/200/25) when he opened with a raise and Engel three-bet holding {a-}{a-}. Akkari ripped 35 bigs with {7-}{7-}, Engel called, and the board ran out clean. With that, Akkari was eliminated from the EPT12 Malta Main Event while Engel jumped out to the early chip lead.

Others who advance from the Day 1b field include three-time WSOP bracelet winner Dominik Nitsche (98,000); Mike "Timex" McDonald (88,900), who was fresh off his win in the EPT12 Malta €25,000 High Roller; WSOP APAC champ Scott Davies (36,000); newly minted WSOP Europe champ Kevin MacPhee (27,200); and Team PokerStars Pros Johnny Lodden (87,200), Marcin Horecki (76,500), Mickey Petersen (43,700), Matthias De Meulder (21,000), and Liv Boeree (16,900).

Day 2 is set to kick off at Noon local time on Tuesday with the plan to play six more levels. Of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to capture all the action, so be sure to tune in then. While you wait, check out video of Sarah Herring's four-wheel Malta adventure:

Jaka Wins a 100,000 Pot with Ace-Queen High

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Faraz Jaka
Faraz Jaka

Faraz Jaka was sitting behind quite a big stack and when he got up from the table to stretch his legs, we asked him if he had won a big hand. "Yeah, I won a quite interesting hand." Jaka told us what had happened.

The player in seat 1 opened to 1,200 in the previous level (250/500). The player in seat 4 three bet to 3,000 from the hijack and Faraz Jaka was sitting in the small blind and four bet to 7,200. The big blind and initial raiser folded, seat 4 made the call.

The flop came {8-Spades}{9-Spades}{4-} and Jaka check called a bet of 6,500. Jaka check called another 11,500 on the {K-Spades} turn and an off suit {9-} hit the river. Jaka checked, and called the 22,000 shove that followed with nothing but {A-}{Q-Spades}. His opponent had even less, showing a red {A-}{10-} for absolutely nothing.

And so the 96,500 pot went Jaka's way, while the player in seat 4 exited the tournament in the second to last level.

"This is Going to be a 100,000 Pot"

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Bart Kuiper
Bart Kuiper

"Look, this is going to be the pot where he busts" Simon Trumper said as we approached the table, referring to his messmate Bart Kuiper. "This is gonna be a 100k pot minimum" Kuiper replied with a big smile.

Kuiper had opened the hijack, Marco Leonzio had called from the button, and Trumper had joined from the big blind.

The flop came {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and was checked around. All three men checked on the {A-Hearts} as well and the {3-Hearts} fell on the river. Trumper bet 2,000 and Kuiper called with a pained face after some thinking. Leonzio called as well in position.

"He wins!" Trumper pointed to Leonzio with a smile on his face. "I think so too" laughed Kuiper. Trumper showed {3-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and Kuiper admitted to having an ace, but indeed Leonzio took it down with the {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}.

"Nice 100k pot huh?" Trumper laughed. At least they're having fun on table 25.

The EPT Malta will have a new champion.

André Akkari
André Akkari

We noticed Team PokerStars Pro Andre Akkari was no longer in his seat, and a quick check with Ari Engel confirmed that the Brazilian had busted. Not only that, Engel had done the deed.

According to him, Akkari opened with a raise and Engel three-bet holding {a-}{a-}. Akkari ripped 35 bigs with {7-}{7-}, Engel called, and the board ran out clean. With that, Akkari was eliminated from the EPT12 Malta Main Event while Engel crossed the century mark.

Meanwhile, Martin Staszko has also been eliminated from the tournament.

Natan Chauskin Wins €1,100 IPT7 Malta2 Main Event for €149,560

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Natan Chauskin
Natan Chauskin

While the PokerNews Live Reporting Team has been busying live reporting the High Rollers and Main Event from the European Poker Tour Malta, another event – the €1,100 IPT7 Malta2 Main Event – wrapped up at the Portomaso Casino.

That tournament attracted 947 participants from 57 countries, which created a prize pool of €918,590 that was distributed to the top 135 players. Among those to cash were Yann Dion (14th - €8,440), Hyunwoo Kang (32nd - €3,550), Gaelle Baumann (34th - €3,550), Matthias De Meulder (77th - €2,210), Luca Pagano (87th - €2,210), Marcin Wydrowski (123rd - €1,810), and Andrea Dato (134th - €1,810).

In the end, it was Natan Chauskin who finished as the last man standing to capture a €149,560 first-place prize, the result of a heads-up deal with EPT regular Govert Metaal, who had actually began the final table as the short stack.

The 27-year-old began the final table as chip leader and rode it all the way to heads-up play. When the deal was struck with Metaal, who was named the Netherland's 2013 Player of the Year, the two agreed to leave €20,000 on the table for the eventual champ, which ended up going to Chauskin along with a shiny new trophy.

"It's not the amount of money that changes my life," Chauskin said after the win. "Plus, I don't play just for the money, I play to become a sportstar, because poker is a sport, where the competition is the most important thing. I will play the EPT Main Event tomorrow and win it too."

According to PokerStars, Chauskin started the pokerbrothers.by coaching website with his friends Mikolai Vaskaboinikau and Jenya Gavrilovich just three months ago. In addition to Chauskin's win, Gavrilovich won the €2,000 NL tournament at EPT Barcelona for €75,300.

Anton Wigg Wins "Such a Weird Hand"

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante
Anton Wigg
Anton Wigg

As we arrived on table 41 we saw a big hand taking place. Brian Yoon told us what had happened before we were there to witness the action.

Yoon opened to 300 and got a call from the button and Anton Wigg in the small blind before Danut Chisu in the big blind squeezed to 1,225. Yoon was the only one folding, both the button and Wigg called.

The flop came {4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{Q-Spades} and Wigg checked. Chisu made a continuation bet of 2,500 and the button called. Wigg now check raised to 6,700 and both Chisu and the button called.

The turn came the {10-Diamonds} and Wigg pushed all in. Danut Chisu called, the button folded.

Danut Chisu: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}
Anton Wigg: {8-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Wigg needed a heart on the river to knock his neighbor out and got just that: {6-Hearts}! Chisu got up from the table with a disappointed face while Wigg started stacking.

"Such a weird hand" Wigg said afterwards, "Good start of the day" he followed that up.

Team PokerStars Pro Luca Pagano First to Fall on Day 1b

Team PokerStars Pro Luca Pagano has become the first player eliminated from Day 1b of the EPT12 Malta Main Event.

Earlier in the level, Pagano lost a big pot to fellow Team Pro Marcin Horecki, who went on to finish the job.

We missed the specifics, but we do know that Pagano got the last of his chips in on the turn with the board reading {3-Spades}{5-Spades}{10-Clubs}{7-Clubs}. Pagano held top pair with the {10-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}, but it was behind the {5-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} two pair of Horecki. The {Q-Diamonds} river failed to help Pagano, and he made his way downstairs to jump into the single-day €10K High Roller.

JC Alvarado Talks About Accepting Olivier Busquet's MMA Challenge

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

When Olivier Busquet took to Twitter looking for a six-figure MMA-style fight – which he hoped to use as training motivation – JC Alvarado answered the call. Given the latter's kickboxing experience, and the former's current lack of fighting proficiency, the two agreed on a bet that will see Busquet put up $120,000 to Alvarado's $150,000, meaning they are essentially fighting for $270,000

While Busuqet hasn't been spotted here at the EPT12 Malta, Alvarado played and survived Day 1a of the Main Event, which is when Sarah Herring caught up with him to talk about the fight.

"We have to figure out the venue, the judges, and the ref," Alvarado recently told PokerNews. "He wanted six months to change, so we're shooting right before Monaco, SCOOP, and WSOP, which is like a busy period. Before that there's kind of nothing going on. We figured we'd train six months and then fight right around the end of April."

While the specifics have yet to be determined, Alvarado said the duo have agreed to a best of five-round fight (Busquet's idea), of 4-5 minutes each.

"I think most people are kind of thinking I'm like some badass MMA fight, which I'm not," said Alvarado. "I've been training for a while, but it's been so sporadic that I teeter between barely making it to blue belt level in jujitsu and then not train six months and go back to being white belt level. I'm not that good. Who knows how athletic Olivier is."

The fight has garnered quite a bit of attention in the poker world with several players, including Jason Mo and Martin Jacobson, looking to bet on the fight. While neither Busquet, who cites his recent divorce as a motivating factor for the fight, nor Alvarado plan to take side action on the match, side bets are sure to abound between other players.

The fight is schedule to take place in April 2016, giving both competitors a solid six months to train. At the time of the fight, Alvarado must weigh in at 165 lbs., while Busquet will need to come in at 187.5 lbs.

The Busquet vs. Alvarado bout follows in the footsteps of the famed 2011 "Elky vs. RaSZi" match, which saw Lex Veldhuis defeat Bertrand Grospellier. As experienced poker-player-turned-MMA-fighter Terrence Chan pointed out, with a $150,000 top prize, the winner of the latest match is slated to take home more than the winners of most UFC bouts.

"Then there's the fact that if I do get head-kicked KO'ed like ElkY did, I have to show up to poker tournaments and be that guy forever," Alvarado admitted. "That's another factor that's in the back of your head the whole time."

Watch Alvarado's full interview from the EPT12 Malta below:
