Dan Shak Leads After Day 1a of the 2016 EPT13 Malta Main Event

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Dan Shak
Dan Shak

The penultimate Main Event of the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour before the rebranding to the PokerStars Championships gathered a field of 134 entrants at the Casino Portomaso. After eight levels of 75 minutes each, only 61 of them bagged up chips and Dan Shak snatched the lead in the very last hand with 185,100 to edge out Pasi Sormunen's 183,500.

The first of two starting days came with an insane rush for Ireland's Mahmood Rasheed, who shot to the top of the leader boards with full house over full house and quads, only to see Martin Kozlov double through him with quads. Rasheed was gone by the time dinner called after level six and Kozlov followed him to the rail in the last two levels of the night when his aces didn't hold up.

Sormunen took over on the very same table and busted players left and right, the Finn had accumulated almost six times the starting stack at the end of level six and the Finn seemed destined to be in the spotlight after Day 1a. Rasheed, Max Silver, Stephan Zesiger and Dario Sammartino were just some of his victims.

Among the other early casualties were Caitlin Hall, EPT12 Dublin 5th place finisher Iliodoros Kamatakis and Jorryt van Hoof. Fatima Moreira de Melo had her aces cracked when Anatoly Korochenskiy turned quads tens and the German High Roller regulars Philipp Gruissem and Martin Finger lasted less than half an hour each before also joining the rail. After coming back from dinner, Pierre Neuville, Theo Jorgensen, Ben Heath, Scott Seiver, early big stack Graydon Kowal, Connor Drinan, Davide Suriano, Anthony Zinno and Justin "Boosted J" Smith ran out of chips, Steve O'Dwyer also failed to make Day 2.

The rise of Shak started just before dinner. In a three-bet pot, the American got it in with a jack-high flush draw against Luke Marsh's ace-queen and hit a jack on the river for a massive double. In the last hand of the night, Shak busted Ghassan Bitar after hero-calling with pocket queens on a flush draw and paired board.

Another two big hands then highlighted the end of Day 1a.

A single-raised hand led to a ten-high flop, and the stacks of [Removed:155], Jeroen Soons and Thomas Rauhut collided. Rauhut had pocket aces, Soons ten-eight for top two pair and Brand pocket tens for top set. Both the turn and river bricked and Brand knocked out Rauhut while almost tripling up in the process. Brand bagged up 163,300 and claimed the last spot on the overnight podium.

And then, the two former EPT champions Oleksii Khoroshenin and Frederik Jensen clashed. Jensen had previously scored a lucky double through Sormunen and flat-called against a limp and the raise of Khoroshenin out of the big blind. Khoroshenin fired two barrels on a paired jack-high board and check-called the river shove with four-deuce for jacks and deuces only to see Jensen turn over queen-jack for trips.

Jensen bagged up 147,800 and is closely followed by German poker prodigy Ole Schemion with 147,500. Schemion finished 6th in the €25,750 Super High Roller earlier today before registering for the Main Event. Other big stacks and notables include Guillaume Valle (143,200), Thomas Mjeldheim (139,700), Dmitry Yurasov (126,500) and Aliaksei Boika (125,100). The top 10 after Day 1a all have different nationalities. Further notables through to Day 2 are Roman Korenev (109,200), Brian Altman (105,300), Charlie Carrel (87,300) and Stephen Chidwick (80,900).

While Day 2 recommences on Tuesday at 12 p.m. local time, the second and bigger starting day kicks off tomorrow at the very same time. The PokerNews live reporting team will be back to provide all the action and you can then also follow updates for the €10,300 Single-Day High Roller as well.

Khoroshenin Busts to Jensen in Last Hand

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Oleksii Khoroshenin
Oleksii Khoroshenin

Oleksii Khoroshenin had lost a previous hand when a move went wrong and the EPT10 Vienna champion would then bow out in the very last hand against fellow former EPT champion Frederik Jensen.

After one player had limped in, Khoroshenin raised to 3,000 from the small blind and Jensen called in the big blind, the limper folded. On the {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} flop, Khoroshenin continued for 4,200 and was called, before leading again the {3-Diamonds} turn for 9,000. Again Jensen didn't go anywhere and called.

The {10-Diamonds} on the river brought a possible back door flush and Khoroshenin checked. Jensen moved all in and Khoroshenin tank-called for around 28,000. Jensen flipped over his {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs} for trips jacks and Khoroshenin tried to muck, but the dealer revealed his {4-Clubs}{2-Spades}. What an end to Day 1a!

Jensen Doubles Through Sormunen

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Frederik Jensen
Frederik Jensen

Pasi Sormunen just enforced a fold from two opponents on the turn of a jack-high board and then raised to 1,800 from the hijack just one hand later. Frederik Jensen three-bet to 5,200 on the button and Sormunen called. On the flop of {Q-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{2-Clubs}, Sormunen bet 10,000 and Jensen raised to 31,600, leaving just 100 behind. Sormunen pushed and Jensen called.

"Are you good?" Sormunen asked and tabled his {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}. Jensen only had the {A-Spades}{7-Spades}, but the {4-Diamonds} turn and {7-Diamonds} river completed the board to give Jensen trips and the double.

Dinner Break on Day 1a with Sormunen in the Lead

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Pasi Sormunen
Pasi Sormunen

Six out of the eight scheduled 75-minute levels are done and the players have been sent into a 75-minute dinner break.

Day 1a started with an insane rush for Ireland's Mahmood Rasheed, as he first had a full house with eights over kings against an inferior full house, followed by quads kings and boosted his stack to more than 65,000. Soon after, Martin Kozlov made quads nines against his jacks and Rasheed was cut back down before eventually departing in level six. Kozlov himself has last been spotted with around 20,000 while Pasi Sormunen on the same table tore apart his opponents.

Sormunen sent Dario Sammartino and Rasheed to the rail and also took care of Max Silver and Stephan Zesiger. Silver shoved short with pocket fours, Zesiger just called with kings and Sormunen saw a flop with the {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}. Ultimately, the open-ender of the Finn got there on the river to crack two sets and Sormunen went on to accumulate 174,000 by now.

Other big stacks include Sergey Sergeev (130,000), Graydon Kowal (102,000), Dan Shak (83,000), Paul McCartney (80,000), Dmitry Yurasov (80,000), Thomas Mjeldheim (78,000) and Jakub Michalak (74,000). Sergeev got lucky early on to crack the pocket kings of Jens Luebbe with pocket queens, then steam-rolled up his stack. Shak got it in with a jack-high flush draw against Luke Marsh's ace-queen and hit a jack on the river for a massive double.

Early casualties included Caitlin Hall, EPT12 Dublin 5th place finisher Iliodoros Kamatakis and Jorryt van Hoof. Fatima Moreira de Melo had her aces cracked when Anatoly Korochenskiy turned quads tens and the German High Roller regulars Philipp Gruissem and Martin Finger lasted less than half an hour each before also joining the rail.

Other notables still in include Ole Schemion (49,000), Adrian Mateos (45,000), Juha Helppi (42,000), Charlie Carrel (33,000) and Connor Drinan (19,000). They will all return at approximately 9.30 p.m. local time and play another two levels, bagging and tagging then takes place around midnight. In the meanwhile, you can also read up on [Removed:17]'s victory in the €25,750 Super High Roller.

Big Setback for Marsh as Shak Doubles

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Dan Shak
Dan Shak

Dan Shak opened quite big to 2,000 from the button and Luke Marsh three-bet to 4,800 out of the big blind. On the flop {7-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}, Marsh bet 3,600 and Shak raised to 15,000 only for Marsh to quickly move all in. Shak called to put his last 41,900 in total on the line and the cards were tabled.

Shak: {J-Hearts}{10-Hearts}
Marsh: {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}

The {9-Clubs} was a blank, but gave Shak an additional gutshot on top. It was then the {J-Diamonds} on the river that improved him and Marsh lost two third of his stack.

Sormunen Knocks Out Silver and Zesiger

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Max Silver
Max Silver

Pasi Sormunen raised to 1,100 from under the gun and Max Silver shoved his last 2,950 from the cutoff. Stephan Zesiger just called in the big blind and Sormunen came along.

On the {10-Hearts}{8-Spades}{6-Diamonds}, Zesiger bet 4,000 and Sormunen called. On the {K-Clubs} turn, the Swiss bet 5,000 with little behind and Sormunen called after some consideration. Silver had already grabbed his belongings and was ready to leave, but the dealer told him to stay where he is. The {4-Clubs} then fell on the river and Zesiger shoved for his last 7,700 and Sormunen quickly called.

Zesiger: {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}
Silver: {4-Hearts}{4-Spades}
Sormunen: {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

The Finn had made a straight to knock out both opponents, claiming the current lead.

Death by Quads - Moreira de Melo Out

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Anatoly Korochenskiy
Anatoly Korochenskiy

On the three-way flop of {10-Hearts}{8-Spades}{2-Hearts}, with plenty of chips already in the middle, action checked to Fatima Moreira de Melo and she bet 5,025. Anatoly Korochenskiy called and Konstantinos Nanos folded. On the {10-Spades} turn, Moreira de Melo moved all in.

"What is this? All in?" Korochenskiy said and stood up from his chair, then followed up with a "I am sorry girl," and called, turned over {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} for quads ... . Moreira de Melo was drawing dead with {A-Clubs}{A-Spades} and shipped over her last 12,100 with a dry smile on the face, walked over to Theo Jorgensen to briefly explain what happened.

Jorryt van Hoof

It had been a day to forget for Jorryt van Hoof and his stack consistently dwindled until there were just 3,500 left. In the small blind, he got it in with the {10-Clubs}{7-Clubs} and Tobias Ziegler in the big blind called with the {K-Clubs}{J-Clubs}. The board came {A-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{4-Spades} and that was it for the former November Niner.

Finger Arrives, Gets Short, Busts, Cracks Up

Level 4 : 150/300, 50 ante
Martin Finger
Martin Finger

Martin Finger was already kind of needled by fellow Germans [Removed:172] and Ismael Bojang on the rail, because he sat down, played a few hands and lost most of his stack.

Then, Finger was all in preflop for his last 5,400 and Luca Granieri looked him up.

Finger: {9-Spades}{9-Diamonds}
Granieri: {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

The flop of {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{10-Spades} let the entire table including Finger and his friends on the rail crack up, while the {K-Clubs} turn and {5-Hearts} river were already meaningless.

Level 3 : 100/200, 25 ante
Cate Hall
Cate Hall

The latest two casualties on Day 1a include Caitlin Hall and Iliodoros Kamatakis.

The latter has had a tough first few levels, but bounced back to get to 15,000. However, his pocket kings were cracked as Dmitry Yurasov flopped a straight and held up to send the Greek to the rail.

As for Hall, she was down to just 7,500 chips and raised to 525 from the button. Michael Ho called in the small blind and Vladimir Troyanovskiy three-bet to 2,050 from the big blind. Hall shoved and Ho folded, Troyanovskiy called.

Hall: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}
Troyanovskiy: {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

The board came {8-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Clubs}{5-Spades}{7-Spades} and the Russian made a straight, Troyanovskiy remained below starting stack though.
