Leon Tsoukernik - EPT 13 Prague €50,000 Super High Roller Winner

Leon Tsoukernik has won the last PokerStars.com EPT Super High Roller. The King's Casino Rozvadov owner beat the stiff competition and lifted the trophy after just six hours of play.

Tsoukernik eliminated his arch nemesis Charlie Carrel heads up to be crowned champion and received a check worth €741,100.

After Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier bubbled the event late on Day 2, play continued until Anthony Zinno went out in seventh place for €123,520. As a result, six players returned to the table on the final day of play.

2016 PokerStars EPT Season 13 Prague €50,000 Super High Roller Final Table

Chips were anything but evenly divided among the six finalists. Tsoukernik and Carrel were leading, Juha Helppi and Viacheslav Buldygin found themselves in the middle of the pack and Paul Newey and Julian Thomas dangled on the bottom. While plenty happened, with big pots, huge coolers and some great table talk, the players would eventually all go out in the order they started in.

Carrel took the lead early on, bluffing Tsoukernik off his flush in a big pot. While the two big stacks changed position, nothing really changed for Thomas. The 2013 WPT Prague champion remained short and wouldn't find his much-needed double. He eventually fell to Carrel, receiving €152,915 for sixth place and leaving Carrel behind, even stronger than before.

Newey, who finished runner-up in this event back in 2014, was the next with his head on the chopping block. He played his own conservative style and it took a bad beat to send him packing. He got it in before the flop with tens against the eights of Buldygin with one eight already folded. The sole eight would not appear on the board. Instead, Newey saw his Russian opponent make a straight on the river. Newey, who came from an incredible run in Macau that saw him make back-to-back final tables last month (a high roller and a super high roller), went out in fifth for €200,000.

The next hand following Newey's departure was probably the most important hand of the final table. Carrel and Tsoukernik squared off in a huge pot that took a good 10 minutes to complete. Tsoukernik, who had already shown on Day 1 he was keen on playing the good old {7-}{2-} and had advertised his love for the worst starting hand in poker earlier on the final table as well, made a straight with it on the river. It was bad luck for Carrel who had two-pair by that time and, after studying his opponent for over eight minutes, couldn't get away with it.

That hand saw Carrel fall back to the role of small stack while Tsoukernik really distanced himself from the competition. Carrel admitted, in a joking fashion, that runner-up was now the only obtainable goal for him, winning was no longer realistic with such a huge lead for Tsoukernik, he said.

It took quite some time before the next player was heading for the rail. Helppi got extremely short only to find some doubles to get back in it. Eventually, Buldygin, the somewhat mysterious Russian player that blasted onto the scene in Malta with two runner-up finishes in expensive events, was the one departing in fourth position. He got it in with jack-nine suited against jacks and packed his things after the board blanked out.

Helppi, fresh off a fourth-place finish in the Master Classics of Poker Amsterdam Main Event last month, ended up going out in third place. Down to just a couple of big blinds, he ran ten-seven suited into jack-ten suited of Tsoukernik and received €341,150 for his troubles. This is the second biggest score of his 15-year long career; he's now only $232,553 short of overtaking Patrik Antonius as Finland's all-time money leader.

That left Carrel and Tsoukernik heads up, the mano-a-mano match that seemed meant to be. From the start of the tournament two days ago, the two had battled with each other. At one point on the first day of play, the discussion between the two had heated up a little. That argument was soon settled and the two were friendly, though extremely competitive and fierce.

Tsoukernik, who had splashed around several one-liners all day, only upped his talking game.

"I'm the only pro, the rest is semi-pro at best" was one of his witticisms, only outdone by his cryptic, "All rivers lead to the sea."

Carrel had his big smile out just about constantly and seemed to enjoy the battle with his Czech opponent. Carrel, usually the most talkative person at the table, had found his match.

While one could argue that Carrel had more experience playing heads-up tournament poker, Tsoukernik was at ease. He repeated that the money was no issue to him and that he was playing for fun.

Carrel started out a three-to-one dog and would never get any traction heads up. Instead, he lost some medium-sized pots to get real short and entered a stage where his stack size dictated folding or shoving. He chose the latter with ace-king and got it in good against the king-jack suited of Tsoukernik. The flop, however, came jack-high with two of Tsoukernik's suit, leaving him drawing extremely slim. Blanks on the turn and river resulted in exactly that; Carrel had to leave the first place to Tsoukernik.

Leon Tsoukernik, the Czar of Rozvadov, ruled in Prague. He dominated just about from start to finish and ended the event in style.

We can only hope that the rest of the final tables of this last ever European Poker Tour will be as fun and interesting as the one on display this afternoon. And otherwise, we're sure Tsoukernik will bring just as much entertainment to all of the events of the PokerStars Festival he hosts in his King's Casino in Rozvadov March 2 through March 13.

Charlie Carrel Eliminated in 2nd Place (€535,250)

Level 22 : 60,000/120,000, 20,000 ante
Charlie Carrel
Charlie Carrel

Hand 127: Charlie Carrel open-shoved for his last 1,270,000 from the small blind and Leon Tsoukernik peeked at his cards, then called.

Charlie Carrel: {A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}
Leon Tsoukernik: {K-Spades}{J-Spades}

"He has ace-king..." Tsoukernik said to his Czech rail, and asked for spades next.

The dealer brought a magic flop of {J-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{5-Spades}. Carrel was drawing very thin all of a sudden and joined the rail after the {5-Hearts} turn and {K-Clubs} river changed nothing.

The players shook hands with Carrel still having a smile on his face before leaving the spotlight to Tsoukernik. The Brit missed out on scooping a third EPT High Roller title and took home €535,250 for his efforts.

A recap of today's action will be available shortly.

Hand 99: Juha Helppi shoved the small blind for 675,000 and Leon Tsoukernik first adjusted his big blind, then quickly called the all in of the Finn.

Juha Helppi: {10-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Leon Tsoukernik: {J-Spades}{10-Spades}

The board ran out {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{2-Spades} and Helppi found no help to join the rail in 3rd place. He earned €341,150 for his efforts and took over the first place in Finland's all-time money list.

"I think the show was made for us," Tsoukernik said and Charlie Carrel replied "since Day 1" when both clashed several times at the same table. The players have been sent into a short break to set up the final duel for the last EPT Super High Roller title.

Hand 92: Carrel raised to 200,000 from the button and Viacheslav Buldygin shoved from the small blind for 1,390,000, Carrel snap-called.

Viacheslav Buldygin: {J-Spades}{9-Spades}
Charlie Carrel: {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

The flop came {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and Buldygin was drawing very thing, he could only chop after the {A-Diamonds} turn. Instead, a blank {6-Diamonds} on the river reduced the field to the last three. Buldygin has been eliminated in 4th place for €258,800 and the trio on the feature table already has €341,150 locked up.

Hand #39: Tsoukernik Takes a Huge Pot Off Carrel with Seven Deuce

Level 20 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Leon Tsoukernik
Leon Tsoukernik

Hand 39: Leon Tsoukernik raised to 200,000 with the {7-Clubs}{2-Clubs} from the button and Charlie Carrel called in the small blind with {A-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. Viacheslav Buldygin also came along with the {Q-Spades}{6-Diamonds} in the big blind and the flop fell {A-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{5-Spades}.

All three players checked and the {4-Hearts} appeared on the turn. Carrel bet 325,000 and Buldygin folded, Tsoukernik called. The {3-Spades} came on the river and Carrel started some table talk already.

Carrel bet 620,000 and then said "this could be the biggest pot of the tournament" to Tsoukernik, who slid forward a big raise without saying a word. Tsoukernik's raise was to 1,700,000 in total and Carrel said "talk to me Leon, tell me what is going on," then apologized in advance for potentially taking a lot of time on this hand.

"I love poker, it is such a good game," Carrel added and stared at the board and Tsoukernik, who gave away nothing at all behind his sunglasses. "Could be ICM suicide," Carrel then said and moved around his seat to get any information.

"This is not a forward motion, I am just picking them up and put them here," Carrel said and put together the chips for the call, still trying to get any kind of reaction from Tsoukernik.

After almost seven minutes, Carrel eventually mentioned "guess I have to" and took some more consideration before taking another 90 seconds and asking for a clock on himself. With less than 10 seconds to go, Carrel called and Tsoukernik turned over his straight.

The Czech, all smiles, then walked over to his rail to high-five and raked in the biggest pot of the tournament so far.

Paul Newey Eliminated in 5th Place (€200,000)

Level 20 : 40,000/80,000, 10,000 ante
Paul Newey
Paul Newey

Hand 38: With {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} under the gun, Viacheslav Buldygin raised to 165,000. Juha Helppi folded from the cutoff but Tsoukernik with the {8-Clubs}{4-Clubs} on the button, did call.

In the small blind, Paul Newey announced all in for 445,000 with {10-Spades}{10-Hearts}. Charlie Carrel folded his big blind and Buldygin reshoved. Tsoukernik folded.

Buldygin had just a single direct out, but gained some cards he could hit on the {6-Spades}{7-Spades}{10-Clubs}-flop. The {Q-Hearts} on the turn was effectively a blank but the {9-Hearts} on the river sure wasn't as it made Buldygin a straight.

After finishing this event in second place back in 2014, now a fifth place finish for Paul Newey worth €200,000. The remaining four players are guaranteed €258,800 from here on out.

Hand 8: Charlie Carrel asked table neighbor Julian Thomas for his stack when folded to him in the small blind and then moved all in, Thomas called it off for 420,000 in the big blind

Julian Thomas: {Q-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}
Charlie Carrel: {K-Hearts}{9-Clubs}

The flop fell {A-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{5-Clubs}, taking away some outs for the German. After the {K-Clubs}, Thomas was drawing dead and grabbed his belongings. A meaningless {9-Spades} river completed the board and Thomas was officially eliminated in sixth place for a payday of €152,915.

All remaining five players are now guaranteed at least €200,000 for their efforts.

Hands #6-7: Great Table Talk Gives Carrel the Lead

Level 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Charlie Carrel
Charlie Carrel

Hand 6: Charlie Carrel was first to act and raised {K-Spades}{J-Diamonds} to 125,000. Over on the bubble, Juha Helppi with the {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs} called. Leon Tsoukernik with {A-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} called from the small blind, Paul Newey folded {7-Clubs}{4-Clubs} from the big blind.

The flop came {6-Hearts}{9-Spades}{Q-Hearts}, giving Helppi top pair. Tsoukernik checked, followed by a bet of 190,000 into the 455,000 pot by Carrel. Helppi called before Tsoukernik folded.

The {9-Hearts} hit the turn, a third heart and a card that paired the board. Carrel checked, and folded to Helppi's 125,000-bet.

Hand 7: In the cutoff, Juha Helppi raised {A-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} to 125,000. His neighbor on the button, Leon Tsoukernik, found {A-Hearts}{9-Spades} and three-bet to 325,000.

Paul Newey folded his small blind right away but Charlie Carrel in the big blind wasn't following his example just like that. Carrel, with the {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}, called and Helppi tanked for a bit before he gave up.

The flop came {Q-Spades}{8-Spades}{4-Hearts} and Carrel checked. "Big pot or small pot, it's up to you. You're the one behind the wheel." Carrel said. Tsoukernik checked behind.

With still 830,000 in the pot, the {J-Spades} hit the turn. Carrel bet 275,000 and Tsoukernik, now with a straight flush draw, asked if Carrel wanted to be the sixth place finisher.

"I'll take a flip between first and sixth" Carrel replied.

"Take it easy now" Julian Thomas added to the conversation.

Tsoukernik called, growing the pot to 1,380,000. The {K-Spades} completed the board.

"I'm gonna be honest, I'm probably not gonna finish sixth anymore. This is a game changer!" Carrel said.

Some great table talk followed with Tsoukernik and Carrel going at it.

"With the risk of looking silly, I'm gonna bet 650,000. Please don't make me look silly." Carrel said before betting 650,000.

Tsoukernik cut out 650,000 to call but put it back not much later. Some more chatter followed and Tsoukernik took back the calling chips. After 6 minutes in the tank, the clock was called on Tsoukernik.

Down to just 20 seconds of time to act, Tsoukernik folded the best hand.

Leon Tsoukernik and Charlie Carrel Headline Final Table of the EPT13 Prague Super High Roller

Will Charlie Carrel win a third EPT High Roller title?
Will Charlie Carrel win a third EPT High Roller title?

After two days of action-filled poker, the field of 49 entries in the 2016 PokerStars EPT Season 13 Prague €50,000 Super High Roller has been whittled down all the way to the last six hopefuls. A prize pool of €2,352,735 has been created and all finalists have €152,915 locked up for their efforts, but all eyes are set on the first-place payout of €741,100 and becoming the last ever EPT Super High Roller champion before the rebranding in 2017.

Leading the final table line up is King's Casino Rozvadov owner Leon Tsoukernik with 4,330,000 followed by two-time EPT High Roller champion Charlie Carrel with 3,565,000. Both won huge pots late on Day 2 to eliminate Jean-Noel Thorel and Mustapha Kanit respectively to establish a decent lead over the remaining four hopefuls. Tsoukernik and Carrel clashed several times on Day 1 already and Tsoukernik had to re-enter as a result, before over taking the spotlight after Day 2.

Juha Helppi (1,615,000) and Viacheslav Buldygin (1,230,000) are in the middle of the pack while Paul Newey (955,000) and Germany's Julian Thomas (535,000) are the two short stacks. Newey finished runner up to Leonid Markin in this very event in 2014, while Thomas' biggest cash to date comes from one year prior after taking down the 2013 WPT Prague Main Event.

One of Europe's true high rollers, Tsoukernik runs the show over at King's Casino on the Western edge of the Czech Republic but has made the short journey to Prague for this last EPT Super High Roller. Tsoukernik is no stranger to big action, having been a participant in a number of nosebleed cash games in his home casino against the likes of Patrik Antonius and other big-name pros.

Tournaments don't seem to be his area of expertise as he has just one recorded cash, coming back in 2011 for €33,020. It's clear the joy of pulling off big bluffs plays a central role in Tsoukernik's drive to play poker, and he's certainly not afraid to get chips in the middle at any time. He'll be active as ever in seeking his first big tournament cash.
