One of the best in all of tournament poker made his mark on Day 2 of the 2018 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino €5,300 EPT Main Event: David Peters. Peters, number 15 on the all-time money list with over $20 million in lifetime winnings, vaulted himself to the top of the leaderboard in a day that lasted just over three levels of 90 minutes.

With 120 players left, play was suspended one table shy of the bubble. For 111 players, a share of the €3,768,450 prize pool is up for grabs, with a mincash worth €9,400. The winner, crowned on Friday, May 4, will receive the first place prize of €712,000 and can call himself the 2018 EPT Monte-Carlo champion.

Peters soared to the overall chip lead in a big hand against Lucas "Bit2Easy" Reeves during the twilight portion of the day. Holding ace-eight in a four-bet pot, Peters flopped an eight and rivered an ace for aces up. The American overbet shoved on the river and Reeves called it off for his tournament life with ace-king. Reeves was eliminated and Peters scooped up a 500k pot to vault himself to the top spot.

Another top stack belongs to last year's Day 2 chipleader, Nick Petrangelo. Petrangelo amassed 463,000 in chips to make himself a prime contender for a deep run. Last year, Petrangelo's Day 2 chip lead ended up in a relatively disappointing 82nd place, and he's looking to improve on that performance this year. Other notables that bagged big include Ali Reza Fatehi (435,500), Ole Schemion (285,000), Sam Greenwood (246,000), Team PokerStars Online Randy "nanonoko" Lew (231,500), Team PokerStars Pro Andre Akkari (227,000) and 2015 EPT Monte Carlo champion Adrian Mateos (181,000).

The room was buzzing with excitement at the start of the day as all players played a flipout tournament to try and win the free $30,000 Platinum Pass that awaited the lucky winner. After winning three flipouts in a row, a loud cheer erupted from the Salle des Etoiles as Paul-Francois Tedeschi grabbed the Pass to punch himself a free ticket to the Bahamas and the PokerStars Players Championship next year.

After the buzz died down, players started Day 2 and late registration was closed. 777 entries were made into the Main Event, consisting of 594 unique players, 201 reentries and 2 no-shows. A late shower that tried to spin things up was Steve O'Dwyer, but he got eliminated in the very first hand of the day. The same empty-handed fate awaited Team PokerStars Pros Igor Kurganov, Celina Lin and Fatima Moreira de Melo, as well as Platinum Pass winner Tedeschi, Daniel Dvoress, Maria Lampropulos, Justin Bonomo, Isaac Haxton and Tsugunari Toma.

On Day 3, there's 01:15:18 to be played out in level 14, followed by a maximum of four more levels of 90 minutes each. Cards will be back in the air at noon and levels will resume with blinds at 1,500/3,000 and a big blind ante of 3,000. PokerNews will be on the floor to provide all the coverage from the PokerStars and Monte-Carlo©Casino EPT €5,300 Main Event as we get closer towards crowning the new champion.

Lascar and Lampropulos Bust to End Day 2

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Maria Lampropulos
Maria Lampropulos

The field has been reduced to just 120 hopefuls and thus the clocks have been stopped to bag and tag nine players away from the money as previously announced by the tournament floor.

The last two casualties were David Lascar and Maria Lampropulos, who were ousted on neighboring tables at almost the same time.

First it was Lascar that open-shoved for 26,000 first to act and Jason Wheeler in the big blind used his last two remaining time bank extensions before making the call.

David Lascar: {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}
Jason Wheeler: {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}

The board came {Q-Spades}{9-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{K-Clubs} and Lascar headed to the rail.

Lampropulos raised to 7,500 and was called by two-time WSOP Main Event finalist Antoine Saout in the big blind. Saout bet the {10-Clubs}{7-Spades}{3-Spades} flop for 8,000 and Lampropulos called. After the {Q-Clubs} turn, Saout bet 16,000 and Lampropulos shoved for what appeared tobe 40,000, the instant call of Saout followed.

Maria Lampropulos: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Antoine Saout: {Q-Hearts}{7-Clubs}

Only a jack could help 2018 PCA champion Lampropulos, but instead it was the blank {10-Diamonds} that fell on the river to end Day 2 with 120 players remaining.

Peters Clips Reeves, Claims Chip Lead

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
David Peters
David Peters

In one of the final hands of the day, David Peters claimed the overall chip lead in a big hand against Luke "Bit2Easy" Reeves in a clash between high stakes giants that left the latter biting the dust. A sizable pot was already created after David Peters had three-bet an open to 18,000. Behind him, Reeves four-bet to 44,000, the initial raiser folded and and Peters called.

Both the {9-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} flop and {10-Diamonds} turn went check/check. The {A-Hearts} on the river, however, made things interesting as Peters overbet shoved all in, effectively putting Reeves to a decision for all of his remaining 153,500 in chips.

It was a tough spot for Reeves, who burned two of his timebank chips before slapping in a call. Peters quickly showed {A-Clubs}{8-Clubs} for aces up, Reeves mucked his hand but was forced to show his {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}.

With the pot, Peters moved up to over 600,000 in chips and claimed the overall chip lead as the day drew to a close.

Toma Loses It All in Half an Hour

Tsugunari Toma
Tsugunari Toma

Tsugunari Toma was crusing for most of the day but within 25 minutes that all has come to a crushing halt after losing a massive pot to Dan Abouaf before bowing out to Ole Schemion.

Toma on the button raised and faced a three-bet by Abouaf in the small blind before four-betting to 46,000. Abouaf five-bet and Toma six-bet all in to see Abouaf snap-call for 205,500 in total.

Dan Abouaf: {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}
Tsugunari Toma: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

The board came {K-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Spades} and Toma was left with just 17,000. However, the Japanese chipped up shortly after before the remaining 50,000 went in preflop against a limp by Schemion. The German snap-called and the cards were turned over.

Tsugunari Toma: {A-Spades}{7-Hearts}
Ole Schemion: {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}

The board came {J-Clubs}{J-Hearts}{9-Spades}{3-Clubs}{Q-Spades} and Schemion jumped out of his chair, celebrating and even high-fiving with Philipp Gruissem. He then apologized and shook hands with Toma, who left the tournament are with a smile on the face.

A preflop raising war in a battle button versus big blind saw Tomas Jozonis open to 6,000 and Gary Miller made it 16,000 to go. Jozonis clicked it back to 36,000 only for Miller to reraise to 80,000. Jozonis moved all in for 149,500 and Miller eventually called after some consideration.

Tomas Jozonis: {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
Gary Miller: {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

No Third EPT Title for Coren Mitchell For Now

Vicky Coren Mitchell
Vicky Coren Mitchell

Victoria Coren Mitchell moved all in for her last 24,500 from the button and Paul Linton called for slightly less out of the small blind. Danut Chisu had both comfortably covered and called out of the big blind.

Paul Linton: {2-Spades}{2-Hearts}
Victoria Coren Mitchell: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}
Danut Chisu: {A-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}

The board ran out {9-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{4-Clubs} and Chisu's full house with sixes over fours scored the double knockout, cutting the bid of Coren Mitchell to become the first three-time champion short.

Miller Bluffs Saout off a Big One

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Gary Miller
Gary Miller

With the pot already up to over 150,000, Antoine Saout and Gary Miller were clashing in a hefty pot with the {4-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{A-Spades}{J-Spades}{7-Spades} fully completed. Saout checked to Miller, who shipped it in for 182,000 total.

The Frenchman agonized over his decision and had to use up all of his four time extensions to come to a decision. With mere seconds left in his final bit of extra time, Saout opted to throw away his hand.

Miller calmly showed {K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} for the bluff to rake in the massive pot. Saout appeared unfazed, but this one had to sting for the two-time WSOP Main Event final tablist as he is now without timebank as well.

Panyak Busts Bou Habib to Join the Chip Leaders

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Maxim Panyak
Maxim Panyak

In a hand between Andrei Boghean and Walid Bou Habib, the latter three-bet the former to 12,500 and both peeled a flop. The {Q-Hearts}{9-Spades}{2-Hearts} flop went check-check, Boghean bet 19,000 on the {7-Spades} turn and Bou Habib called. On the {5-Spades} river, Boghean shoved and Bou Habib snap-called for 49,500 total with {K-Spades}{10-Spades} to double up.

However, Bou Habib was gone shortly after, while Maxim Panyak was sitting behind a massive stack that is nearing half a million. According to Stefan Huber, Bou Habib had raised and picked up two callers in Arianna Son and Panyak in the blinds.

On a flop of {K-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Hearts}, action checked to Bou Habib and he continued for 5,500. Son called and Panyak check-raised to 24,500. Bou Habib made it 65,000 to go in order to force our Son, then called the shove of Panyak with the {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. The Main Event finalist from last year turned over {K-}{2-} for flopped two pair and two bricks later Panyak had the busy task to integrate even more chips into the growing tower right in front of him.

We're not exactly sure what just transpired, as we only caught the tail end of a massive hand between John Juanda and Eric Sfez. What we do know is that on a {Q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{8-Spades}{K-Clubs} board, Juanda had his remaining stack of over 100,000 in the middle with {7-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for just seven-high, while Sfez' was showing {A-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} for trip eights.

With Juanda's bustout, Sfez now sits behind a massive pile worth 330,000.

Fernandez Alonso Runs Riot Early On

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Javier_Fernandez_Alonso
Javier_Fernandez_Alonso

After starting the day in the middle of the pack, Javier Fernandez Alonso has taken over the lead after more than doubling up his stack and sending at least two opponents to the rail. His second victim was Julian Stuer, who paid off the three barrels of the Spaniard with {A-Hearts}{K-Spades} versus {A-Clubs}{A-Spades} on a board of {A-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}{3-Hearts}.

Just now, Fernandez Alonso check-called a bet of 12,500 on the {J-Hearts}{10-Spades}{3-Clubs}{9-Diamonds} turn and checked the {2-Hearts} river. His opponent checked behind and was shown the {K-Spades}{Q-Spades}.

"What do you expect?" Stefan Huber joked and several other players at the table could all but laugh, having witnessed the hot run from a close distance.
