Calamusa Crushes Day 1a of the 2019 EPT Prague Main Event

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Pierre Calamusa

After ten levels of 60 minutes each, the first of two starting days of the €5,300 Main Event at the 2019 PokerStars European Poker Tour Prague has concluded with Pierre Calamusa towering above the competition. The French pro plowed his way through a Day 1a field that drew 391 entries — 20 more than last year — and ultimately put 457,000 in his bag, nearly twice the size of his nearest competitor.

Seemingly sporting a massive stack throughout the day, Calamusa did need both of his bullets to amass his piles. After coming up short on his first try early in the day, he fared much, much better with his second chance. Having already racked up over $1.2M in lifetime winnings, Calamusa will be in the driver's seat to add plenty more when the 127 remaining players will return on Friday at noon for Day 2.

While one man hogged the spotlights and stole the show, other notables sporting healthy stacks advanced as well. Rozvadov, Czech Republic's local massage parlor owner Yehuda Cohen, notorious under his alias "ChiKKita BanAAna", bagged a top-five stack with 213,700. Irish transplant, high stakes legend and former EPT champion Steve O'Dwyer also nestled himself among the top stacks in the room and bagged 206,400 to kick off his tournament in style. Stefan Egermann (285,100) and Roland Chassing (248,600) rounded out the top five with 200k+ stacks as well.

Big names such as Aliaksei Boika (156,000), Fahredin Mustafov (138,000), Arsenii Karmatckii (119,500), Dietrich Fast (105,200), Adrian Mateos (104,100), Hossein Ensan (94,800) and Rainer Kempe (23,200) will also be back on Friday after finding a bag after ten levels of 60 minutes.

PokerStars ambassador Kalidou Sow, the 2017 EPT Prague Main Event winner, was one of the two representing the Red Spade on Day 1a, together with PSPC champ Ramon Colillas who busted out. In a big hand with fellow EPT-winner Boika, Sow and Boika both held ace-king against Kimmo Kurko's pocket jacks. The dealer fanned out four wheel cards to keep both Boika and Sow in the tournament, and the pair chopped up most of Kurko's chips in the process. Sow ultimately survived the day with 79,000 in chips and will be back on Friday.

The EPT Main Event offers a single reentry and among those that ran out of one or both of their bullets today were the likes of Davidi Kitai, Sam Greenwood, Ole Schemion, Joris Ruijs and the defending champ, Paul Michaelis. Those that have their second bullet left can opt to reenter on Day 1b, or up until the start of Day 2 if they do so desire.

Day 1b kicks off at noon on Thursday and, like Day 1a, will feature ten levels of 60 minutes each, with a 75-minute dinner break after level 6. Make sure to check back regularly to PokerNews for all the latest from the European Poker Tour in Prague!

Three Way All-In Sends Chips In Two Directions

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Kalidou Sow
Kalidou Sow

Preflop action saw Kalidou Sow all in for 32,100 from the hijack after Kimmo Kurko and Aliaksei Boika had already committed chips from under the gun and middle position, respectively, and Kurko called Sow's shove to put action back on Boika who went all in over the top.

Kurko went deep into the tank and after several minutes decided on a call.

Kalidou Sow: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Aliaksei Boika: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Kimmo Kurko: {j-Hearts}{j-Clubs}

Kurko was poised for the double knockout and a massive increase to stack as both Boika and Sow both had the same hand, reducing their odds to tilt the scales even further in Kurko's favor. The flop came {10-Hearts}{2-Spades}{3-Clubs} and Kurko still appeared to be safe. The turn then fell behind {4-Hearts} to give Boika and Sow a backdoor wheel draw, and the river {5-Diamonds} completed that draw to make Kurko's hand no longer good.

"Of course," said Kurko, realizing his fate in the runout. Boika's remaining stack was counted for the side pot and totaled to be 76,800 which Kurko paid, leaving him just over 10,000 behind. Sow and Boika then split the side pot, resulting in an increase to Sow's stack and a massive uptick to that of Boika's.

Mustafa Jukovic

With 19,000 in the middle and the completed board showing {q-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{7-Spades}{8-Diamonds}, Harry Lodge had bet 8,600 and Pasquale Braco raised to 27,000 in the hijack. Mustafa Jukovic was on the button and tanked for several minutes while trying to start table chat repeatedly. The dealer reminded him that it was a three-way pot and Jukovic eventually said "if I call this, it's only because you seem so calm."

Lodge called the clock and the floorman arrived.

"Why the clock? This is such a big pot?" Jukovic inquired. Lodge replied "it has been seven minutes" and Jukovic eventually called, Lodge snap-folded.

Braco showed the {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} and Jukovic had that beat with {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for the bottom end of the straight.

Lodge had some 18,600 left after the hand and bowed out shortly after.

Henri Buhler

EPT Sochi Main Event champion Arsenii Karmatckii raised to 1,000 from under the gun and Thomas Boivin in the cutoff made it 3,500 to go. Henri Buhler moved all in out of the big blind for around 17,000 and Karmatckii isolated by moving all-in himself, Boivin folded.

Henri Buhler: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}
Arsenii Karmatckii: {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

The board came {9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{q-Spades}{7-Clubs} and Buhler found no help.

"Good luck on Twitch, I am always rooting for you," another player at the table remarked. Buhler, who can be found on Twitch under his alias Buehlero, has been a regular and very popular poker streamer for some time already and slowly finds his way onto the live poker scene also.

Calamusa Jams Up His Stack

Level 4 : 100/300, 300 ante
Pierre Calamusa in the €1,100 National
Pierre Calamusa in the €1,100 National

On the tail end of a big pot, only Luke Marsh and Pierre Calamusa remained and the former checked to Calmusa, who moved all in with the board showing {10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{q-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}.

Marsh had a big stack at his disposal and eventually opted to fold, Calamusa raked in the pot with a big smile on the face.

"You did a bluff, eh? But be careful, he doesn't like to fold," another player at the table pointed out.

According to Calamusa, he had faced a raise to 800 and a call by Marsh in the small blind. Calamusa three-bet to 3,500 and picked up two callers. A first barrel of 5,000 by Calamusa on the flop was called two ways and just Marsh check-called 13,000 on the turn before check-folding the river.

Jimmy Guerrero (earlier this week)

French grinders Corentin Ropert and Jimmy Guerrero were duking it out in a pot that was already on the river with the board reading {q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{3-Hearts}.

Ropert checked to Guerrero, who bet 2,800. Ropert check-raised to 9,500 and Guerrero took the better part of two minutes before calling it off.

Ropert rolled over {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} for the blades but Guerrero quickly revealed the {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a straight, followed by a frown from Ropert.

Gomez Zapatero Eliminated by Martirosian

Artur Martirosian
Artur Martirosian

Artur Martirosian opened to 600 and called a three-bet to 2,000 by Javier Gomez Zapatero from one seat over in the hijack. Both opted to check the {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop and Martirosian bet the {j-Hearts} turn for 4,500, which Gomez Zapatero called.

After the {9-Clubs} river, Martirosian pushed for an effective 13,000 as that's what the Spaniard had behind. Gomez Zapatero spent more than two minutes in the think tank and then called.

Martirosian rolled over {j-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for trips jacks and Gomez Zapatero ended up second-best with the {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}.
