Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden Leads After Day 2

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Johnny Lodden
Johnny Lodden

Day 2 of the 2013 PokerStars and Monte-Carlo® Casino European Poker Tour Grand Final has concluded following an exciting six levels of play that saw many of poker's hottest players rise to the top of the pack. At the beginning of the day, 268 hopefuls returned to felt, but that number was trimmed to about 110. Topping those advancing to Day 3 was Team PokerStars Pro Johnny Lodden with 605,200 in chips.

While the tournament hasn't reached the money just yet, the prize pool has been released. The eventual winner of this year's event will take home a pocket-bursting €1.224 million from the €5.31 million prize pool. The champion will also receive a brilliantly-crafted watch worth more than €5,000 from Slyde. The top 80 spots are set to pay out, with a min-cash worth €16,000.

Out of all that happened on Day 2, one thing is for certain: the EPT Grand Final will be crowning a brand new champion for 2013. Nicolas Chouity was the winner in 2010, and one of two former winners returning to play on Wednesday, but he fell during the first half of the day. Last year's winner, Mohsin Charania, was the only other former champion of this event, but his run came to an end in the final level of the night.

With the blinds at 1,200/2,400/300 in Level 14, Charania ran pocket nines into the pocket tens of five-time World Series of Poker gold bracelet winner John Juanda. The money went in preflop and five community cards weren't enough to save Charania. Juanda went on to finish with 181,300 in chips.

With the biggest story of the day being the thriving of some of the biggest names in the game, the top portion of the leader board was cluttered with superstars wielding big stacks when play wrapped up. Calvin Anderson (472,600), Oleksii Kovalchuk (414,200), Steve O'Dwyer (389,200), Freddy Deeb (350,200), Paul Volpe (256,500) and Andrew Lichtenberger (227,300) were just a handful of the big names to amass large stacks.

Team PokerStars Pro was also very well represented. Daniel Negreanu (340,100), Jason Mercier (321,900), Jake Cody (223,300), Marcin Horecki (137,800) and Chad Brown (115,900) were a couple of those donning the red spade to finish out the day strong.

On the flip side side of the deal were Team Pros Barry Greenstein, Marcel Luske, Humberto Brenes, Leo Fernandez, Angel Guillen and Vicky Coren — all of whom were eliminated. Luske has been victorious in his last five events that he has cashed in, but he wouldn't be winning this event or cashing in it after falling at the hands of Luke Schwartz.

During Level 9 with the blinds at 400/800/100, the "Flying Dutchman" put in a big three-bet to 8,500 after Calvin Anderson had opened to 1,600 and Charbel Salloum flat-called. Action then folded to Schwartz in the big blind, and he four-bet to 15,000. Anderson and Salloum got out of the way, but Luske put in the call to see the {A-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds} flop. Schwartz fired enough to put Luske all in, and Luske stuck in his last 15,000 or so to put himself at risk. When the cards were tabled, Schwartz's {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts} was beating Luske's {J-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}, and his hand held after the {3-Hearts} turn and {K-Clubs} river.

Day 3 will commence at 12 p.m. local time in Monaco, and you can expect things to really heat up with the money bubble on the verge of bursting. Be sure to return right here to PokerNews for all of the live coverage from the first shuffle until the last hand of the night.

Here Comes Cody!

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Jake Cody
Jake Cody

We wonder why Jake Cody has a massive smile on his face? It might have something to do with him scooping a big pot and eliminating two dangerous opponents. All without ten-four as well!

Tom Marchese was short and open shoved with ten-nine. Team PokerStars Pro Leo Ferandez got tricky ans just flat called with pocket kings. Team mate Cody looked down at ace-king and put in a raise. It was then that Fernandez made an aggressive all in push.

Cody called and had to wait until the turn to bink his three-outer and take out both players.

Cal vs. Chewy

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Calvin Anderson
Calvin Anderson

Calvin Anderson, who has over $4.1 million in online tournament earnings, checked on a flop of {2-Hearts}{9-Spades}{5-Hearts}. Senh Ung checked as well, and Andrew Lichtenberger, who has over $1.6 million in online tournament earnings and nearly $3 million in live tournament earnings, tossed out 7,500.

Anderson check-raised to 20,800, only Lichtenberger called, and the turn brought the {q-Spades}. Anderson tanked for a bit, then led out for 28,300. Lichtenberger called.

A repeat deuce - the {2-Diamonds} - completed the board, and Anderson fired another bullet worth 48,500. Lichtenberger tanked for no longer than two minutes before a player at the table called the clock.

Luke Schwartz scrunched his face, and when the floor arrived, he told him, "He's not taking that long, really."

Still, the tournament director gave Lichtenberger one minute to act upon his hand. Lichtenberger had already cut out enough chips to make the call, and with only five seconds left on the countdown, he grabbed them.

Lichtenberger didn't commit them however, and the clock expired. He mucked his hand, and the pot was shipped to Anderson.

Kurganov Binks One

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Igor Kurganov
Igor Kurganov

Igor Kurganov just took a big pot off Annette Obrestad and the German pro was kind enough to explain to us what happened after he was stacking his chips.

Kurganov raised to 2,500 from early position with {4-Clubs}{5-Clubs} after which Obrestad three-bet to 8,800 from the big blind with {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}. Kurganov made the call and with 20,000 chips in the pot the flop showed {6-Clubs}{2-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}.

Obrestad continued by betting 10,500 and Kurganov made the call.

"And then BINK!" Kurganov smiled as he explained that the {3-Spades} popped up on the turn.

The Norwegian WSOPE Main Event winner bet 22,000 on the turn and Kurganov called once more. The river brought out the {2-Clubs} and Obrestad bet 53,000 into 85,000 while Kurganov had 78,000 chips left.

"And then I slow rolled," Kurganov laughed as he explained how he tanked for quite some time before just making the call with his turned straight.

"I'm not still sure about that," the German pro added. Kurganov raked in a huge pot and is now among the bigger stacks in the room.

Just before the break, PokerStars Team Online's Tatiana Barausova took care of two players in one hand to pass the 100k mark.

All the chips went in pre flop between herself, Team PokerStars Pro Vicky Coren and Vadzim Markushevski. Barausova's {9-Hearts}{9-Spades} held on a ten high bord to bust Coren (ace-king) and Markushevski (king-queen).

Ole Schemion on Day 1

Ole Schemion, winner of the Partouche Poker Tour, just managed to grab the chip lead. The 20-year old German, who's not even going to be able to play the WSOP this summer, had 17,000 out in front of him when Walid Bou Habib invested 30,800 from the small blind. Schemion decided to move all in and Habib made the call for around 100,000 chips.

Ole Schemion: {Q-Spades}{Q-Clubs}
Walid Bou Habib: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

The board ran out {8-Spades}{K-Hearts}{Q-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{7-Clubs} and Habib was knocked out.
